Today's Blind Items - People Had Sex Everywhere

Something a little different to start the week than the grisly stuff from last week. I guess I have to say this movie was back in the day. I mean technically it was last century so at this point that is back in the day. It starred someone who is an A+ list mostly movie actor right now. Had a franchise and everything. Foreign born.

This movie was one of his bigger bombs of all time. The thing is though, despite the bad reviews and box office, I bet most of you know the name of the movie. It went on to bigger things down the road. Anyway, the two big producers on the movie had hundreds and hundreds of extras on this set. One thing they wanted was to have a good time making this movie. They built into the budget a party fee. One of the producers most of you know. The other one, you know his movies. Anyway, there only qualification to be hired as an extra was to be an attractive woman and be willing to have sex for free or for money with any member of the cast or crew.

Well, from day one things were out of control. The producers told these women they would make over a thousand bucks a day. The women started hitting on guys right away. With the producers behind the effort and often spending time with four or five women at once multiple times a day, the cast started doing the same thing.

The A+ list actor said there was literally no place you could go on the set where people were not having sex. He said he would come back to his trailer and there would be multiple couples inside having sex. People had sex in corners or in bathrooms. It was out of control. This was not a one day thing. For the entirety of the shoot, this went on. He says he has never seen anything like it before or since. He thinks maybe that is the reason the movie sucked so bad. No one was around to rehearse very much and these scenes involved a lot of that. They would just do the bare minimum and be off having sex with someone new.

NEwsies With Christian Bale was my guess but there are very women in the movie

How could a critical and commercial bomb go on to bigger and better things down the road?

AvignonVagabond said...

Waterworld? It has some video games.

MontanaMarriott said...

I am thinking a movie which bombed and then got remade into a TV series on cable/almost tv or network and became a hit?

sandybrook said...

13th Warrior? Bandaras and Michael Crichton?

AvignonVagabond said...

nevermind Waterworld no fb actor

LooLooEasy said...

@Montana Ahhhh what about Buffy the Vampire Slayer? It only did about $16m at the B.O. and 34% RT score. Not sure who the A+ guy would be.

AppleThief4Elliot said...

Showgirls would be a good guess, because of the way the movie bombed but then became a cult favorite. How about Empire Records with Anthony LaPaglia? Is he A+ ?

just sayin' said...

loolooeasy: i'm trying to find a box office bomb that became a cult movie. my first thought was rocky horror because of it's afterlife, and tim curry for foreign-born actor, but he's not a+ nor did he have a franchise. also it sounds like this movie was made in the 90's.

Itttt said...

For foreign born A+ actor with a franchise I'm thinking Ahhhhnold. He had some serious bombs after True Lies/in the late 90s which is where this BI hints at. Batman & Robin? Although Joel Schumacker is non-hetero.

Or could it be a Bruckheimer/Bay movie...Pearl Harbor?

A+ Bruce Willis (born in Germany)

Producer you know Joel Silver

Producer you don't Robert Kraft

Movie was Hudson Hawk

Bigger and better things, has become a bit of a cult classic

i think you nailed it, rusty jones.

Caligula seems too obvious, and McDowell doesn't seem to have a franchise.

Robert Kraft the owner of the Patriots?

Shiiiiiiit, could it be Hudson Hawk? 1991, and Beuce Willis while American was actually born in West Germany. Although nothing came of Hudson Hawk to the best of my knowledge.

Don't see anything on the Wikipedia list of box office bombs from '90-2000 that jump out.

Oh, I wanted this to be Ryan Reynolds and Van Wilder SO. BADLY.

Rinky said...

Richard E. Grant wrote a whole chapter on the shenanigans on Hudson Hawk in his boo Without Nails. A lot of stupidity, drama, ego and waste, but he mentions nothing like what this blind describes.

Mrs Crab said...

I'm thinking maybe a Ryan Reynolds movie?

Anonymous said...

Just to throw it out there but is there any way to make THE CABLE GUY work?

Rinky said...

Showgirls fits in many ways - Alan Marshall is the well-known producer and Mario Kasser the one whose movies we know (Terminator 2, the Rambo movies, Total Recall). The movie flopped at the box office but became a best-seller on video and made a lot of money in the end as well a a cult classic. The extras used would certainly be attractive women. The only thing that doesn't fit is the A+ 'star'. Kyle M. is American and no longer A list by any stretch of the imagination.

Jayne Townsley said...

My crazy guess is "The 13th Warrior."

Cutthroat Island?

Buck Dancer said...

How has no one gotten this yet? It's very clearly The Avengers from 1998. Ticks every single one of the boxes.

Box office flop from last century? Check. Out in 1998 and only made about 1/3 of its $60 mil budget back. Terrible reviews (Fiennes and Thurman got called the worst double act of all time)

Starring a foreign born A+ list mostly movie actor who had a franchise? Check. Ralph Fiennes (HP being the franchise).

Most of us know the name of the movie, which went on to bigger things down the road, i.e. Marvel's Avengers (said the "name" went on to do bigger and better things, which it quite literally did).

Big producer everyone knows? Jerry Weintraub. (other producer was either Arnon Milchan or Mike Medavoy – both producers on the film, and no one you've ever heard of)

nancer said...

hudson hawk is a cult classic????????? since when?

and i don't know the names of a lot of movies named. i like the 'showgirls' guess.

John Doe said...

I doubt that this is Waterworld. Costner is American-born and I can't recall him being in any notable franchises. This is likely either Bruce Willis or Arnold Schwartznegger. I'm thinking that its Willis in Hudson Hawk.

RE: The Avengers. Could this be related to Uma Thurman's recent response to the Hollywood sex scandal? She said something like, "I"ll answer when I'm not so angry."

just sayin' said...

uma thurman's ex arpad "arki" busson, father of one of her children, and andre balazs, her current boyfriend are in epstein's little black book. i'm guessing she doesn't want her life to be publicly examined.

SkittleKitty said...

Were there lots of extras on Hudson Hawk or The Avengers? (Don't know either film...)

Alexandria said...

So it's the Avengers? Oh dear, if producers and crew just wanted an excuse to have fun, making a blockbuster is pretty expensive one lmao.

Raspy said...

Well if you don't know Hudson hawk is a bit of a cult classic then it makes sense you wouldn't know the other film names either.

Raspy said...

Great guess but you don't have to be a douche about it

Cld said...

Could Mel Gibson work?
Franchise Lethal Weapon or Mad Max

kregger said...

Not "The Avengers" from 1998...Ralph Fiennes has never been A+ list and producer Jerry Weintraub is no Joel Silver. Plus although the movie performed poorly it almost recouped its cost. It's nowhere near the "biggest bomb of all time."

And now way would Uma Thurman put up with on-set orgies happening daily. Jim Broadbent and Eileen Atkins? Same....

Hudson Hawk bombed big time. HUGE.

Hudson Hawk for the winner.

Snifter said...

Hudson Hawk didn't use that many extras. A few scenes, but not many.

Batman and Robin? But Clooney was the "star," not Arnold.

Hmmm.

shamaro said...

I don’t think Ralph is A+ though. He can’t get a movie a green light.

Jude Law
I Heart Huckabees

texasrose said...

The implication is that the A+ maybe didn't participate much based on the blind.

DaMisses said...

I can say it was definitely not Showgirls as I worked on that movie and there was nothing going on

Hudson Hawk iirc correctly was filmed mostly in Hungary and was a miserable experience for everyone, according to Richard E. Grant. The only sex anecdote in his book about his time on that shoot were Sandra Bernhard giving a hand job to some crew member and regaling everyone with the story later at some dinner.

Graybles1000 said...

Dazed & Confused?? That’s my best guess. Very interesting blind!

Mrs Meat said...

Wow, this is difficult. The wording suggests that it was only just last century, but none of the flops from the late 90s which feature an A+ foreign born male lead have achieved any kind of cult status.

My only guess is The Phantom Menace ('99) with Ewan McGregor. But that was a massive box office hit, despite being heavily panned. The franchise has gone on to do better. It would have had a zillion extras.

Glue said...

As far as the blind, I have no idea. I have a feeling it'll be a movie non of us suspect.

@Rinky - Richard E. Grant wrote a book?! I have to check it out. Love him! Fell in love w/ Richard E. Grant when I saw How To Get Ahead in Advertising (many years ago). That movie had me in tears from laughing so hard. Grant is amazing. He's so funny!! I know most hated Hudson Hawk too, but that movie is so much fun to watch. So many little thing in that movie that are hilarious. I loved it. Richard E. Grant and Sandra Bernhard made Hudson Hawk a gem to watch. They were great in that movie.
Off to search for a book.....

AKA said...

I don't think it's Hudson Hawk because it didn't go on to bigger things down the road. Unless I'm missing something.

PotPourri said...

It will be some weird movie. I still like Showgirls for the movie, but Kyle M is not Foreign Born.

Unknown said...

@Snifter, Arnold was first-billed in Batman & Robin.

Snifter said...

Well then... that's def a contender.

Itttt said...

While Ralph Fiennes isn't A+ list, the villain in Avengers (film based off the old TVshow) was Sean Connery...definitely A+ list with the longest running franchise in film.

Buuuut I still am leaning towards Batman and Robin, with Arnold Schwarzenegger being the star. In fact, I believe he WAS the lead/main attraction/top billing in that film, hell just look at the film poster! His name is on top center...Clooney wasn't quite A list when it came out although very up and coming. Moviec as laughably bad yet has a cult following and name obviously is one of the top IPs in existence.

Unknown said...

Batman & Robin feels like a movie where everyone was distracted and just didn't care. It's not just bad, it's baffingly bad, with so many things that make you ask, "Why? Why would you put that in there?" Uma Thurman is the only one who appears to be putting any effort into her character at all. It's also a movie where, as one reviewer put it, it simultaneously looks super-cheap and super-expensive, money burning on screen. Maybe a big party budget would explain that.

Silkprint said...

What year did Drowning Mona come out ? I always loved that movie but most people hated it and it's now a cult classic .

Silkprint said...

Re read ,,,I am thinking Whoever said the Batman movie got it

AppleThief4Elliot said...

Ittt, I think you're confusing Connery with Patrick MacNee who was one of the stars of The Avengers. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0054518/fullcredits?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm

Boogieman said...

@LooLooEasy If it were Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the foreign born (Canadian) A+ list actor on that would be Donald Sutherland, whose franchise would be "The Hunger Games".

Not sure that it holds up though, because I don't recognize any of the producers on that one, though we would all recognize the writer, Josh Whedon, or the guy who did the music, Carter Burwell.

gkgyver said...

The Blind says the movie required a lot of rehearsing, I doubt that was Batman ;) Showgirls seems good.
