I just found out Elton hardly wrote any of his lyrics. His knighthood should be revoked.

Ivy said...

Everyone has always known that Elton John doesn't write his lyrics. Bernie Taupin does and gets credit for it. It's been that way for Elton's entire career.

Guesser said...

@Newbomb,I just found out about it in 1971, he does write most of the music, though. And Enty,a cowriter is not a ghostwriter.

Def Tay Tay.

I agree it is supposed to be Taylor, but that doesn't make sense because a procedural dismissal does not scream "trying to make a case go away". 12(b)(6) motions (what Swift's lawyers filed in this case) are the normal thing any defendant does in federal court. Failure to state a claim. And the plaintiffs have leave to amend, so that doesn't mean it is going away. (I mean, it probably would because if they had a real case they would have made it in the first complaint, but still. This isn't "going away" the way a case would with a settlement and NDA.)

So either Enterns don't know law or Enty has forgotten his federal civil procedure, or it isn't Taylor.

You just found out that Bernie Taupin was Elton John's lyricist?

+1 @Melissa. Here is the judge's decision in a nutshell: "In order for such short phrases to be protected under the Copyright Act, they must be more creative than the lyrics at issue here...the phrases about players and haters existed in pop culture before 2001."

Her attorneys will probably offer nuisance value (~$10k) in exchange for a full release just to keep the issue from coming back.

Well said @melissa. came here to make similar comment!

He and his songwriter actually have a very beautiful and public working relationship. Strangely enough, the lyrics are written first and Elton puts music to them after.

+1 supercreeps. I don't think it's a stretch to say that the Elton John and Bernie Taupin song crafting collaboration is near legendary. I believe his Captain Fantastic and The Brown Dirt Cowboy album is a tribute to their career partnership.

i wouldn't say taylor for this ordinarily but she was just in the news yesterday bc of a copyright claim...

I probably have heard about Elton but then saw a butterfly and stopped caring about it.

I'm 99% sure it's Taylor and 1% for Bey.

Colonel Blake said...

Madge wrote what she wrote and wouldn't sing anyone else's songs unless she got 25% of writing credit, so that's already out there. She was one shrewd business girl!!

I'm really hoping for Jewel, don't know why.

@Newbomb, yeah like everyone said, Elton John was known as a great performer but crap at lyrics by himself, I think they even did a skit about it in a tv show.

Bernie Taupin info -

Straight up British lad who fell in love with the American West.

He partly owned a famous bull, one of the best in bull riding, named Little Yellow Jacket. LYJ is ranked one of the buckingest bulls who ever performed. He used to do this thing, after LYJ threw a rider, he would take a moment, pose and look at the fans, then calmly strut to his pen -

The first time I saw his owner listed as Bernie Taupin I 'bout fell out of my chair. Had to go home and research - yes THAT Bernie Taupin.

Beyonce.

For years she has strong-armed songwriters into sharing credit for their songs so she could gain cred as an artiste as well as royalties.

Among others, she did it to Kandi Burruss with "Bills, bills, bills" when B was with Destiny's Child, and to Ryan Tedder with "Halo". Shameless.

I was under the impression that lyrics were ALWAYS written first? Huh. Interesting.

"If they don't give me proper credit, I just walk away..." —Material Girl (Madonna)

No kidding. Literally it was stated in her song lyrics.

Not a fan of either but I'd actually say Beyonce over Swift. Both are super fake and full of shit but Beyonce's entire gimmick is seeming to be perfect and better than everyone on Earth. Swift has at least had some embarrassments and looked bad before but Beyonce's image is that she in unattainable, untouchable, and above it all

Your giving swift swift credit for getting caught? That's fucking backwards.

americanpanda said...

Taylor's whole shtick is the angsty song writer that writes about her life. Don't break her heart or you'll end up a song!
The fact she is still astonishingly stunted emotionally is pretty sad and her need for control is biting her in the ass.

Bey is not known for writing her songs, ffs she can barely speak. She's just known to throw a credit in for herself for money purposes, nothing else. Lemonade wasn't her either.

longtimereader said...

Swift has a very distinct songwriting style, you don't get into the country HOF without talent. I'd say max martin was responsible for the generic electro-pop sound of her new album which dragged it down. she is better as a country pop act. Her ghostwriting would involve current country songs on the d.l.

plot said...

Then Swifty should have stayed in country music. I think she ran out of ideas and wanted a whole lot more money and control. She followed the Injured Woman template for a long time, still is, and it resonated with her fans for a while. She sought out Max Martin, not the other way 'round, and he's obviously been basing his tunes off her half written, pink princess, diaries.

The only thing Swifty can do now is to come out, admit her dislike of men had a more organic base and that SHE was the problem, not them, for really not being into them.

Where she fuckt up was when she lately started charging her most ardent fans for the tea parties and the VIP access (great, they were allowed to watch soundchecks) and to be closer to her physically. That is stuff she used to give away through contests and promotions. Now she is tired of those little girls who adore her and wants them to pay. Her fanbase is tapering off and no adults are digging her style.

Like Madonna who demanded more credit than she actually put in,Bey has none of the best songwriters selling her anything anymore (and Jay Z's power over them is on the wane.) I bet there have been a lot of suits quietly settled over Bey's appropriation of videos and music from other artists. Her tours still make a ton of money.

I have no idea why she is such a big deal. Her voice is unremarkable. She is a spastic, vulgar dancer (like the Beauty Pageant Queen she was raised to be.) "Her" songs lack depth or interest. Her photo shoots are straight out of YourShittyFamily on Instagram, like this one -

http://gossiponthis.com/2017/02/01/beyonce-pregnant-twins-instagram-jay-z-blue-ivy-carter-two-babies/

I really don't get her.

Orville said...

All the top singers demand songwriting credits from Madonna to Beyonce. Even if they never wrote the song. Standard practice in music industry especially when it involves up and coming singers.

Unknown said...

Taylor Swift is a fucking fraud. She needs to get out of the closet and start writing honest music.

plot said...

No, not all singers demand credit, or they demand very little, and strangely they get better music that way.

Standard practice for Madge and Bey means they can't attract the best talent. It's pretty obvious why the first album of newcomers blasts the roof off, song wise, when the old war horses can't get anyone to work with them (other than that sap Max Martin, master of the three chord song build on girlish diary entries.)
