Four For Friday - Justice For A Friend

This is from a friend of mine who wanted to get a little justice for someone. So, because he can tell it best, I only did a little light editing.

My old friend and long time collaborator #1 is a multiple Grammy winning producer in Nashville.  He wanted to get into working on music for films and television. His first and to my knowledge only gig like this (because of his horrible experience) was to be the music producer and supervisor (of original music) for #2 (an upcoming reboot).

Early on the process went great. He was very excited. Probably more excited than I had ever heard him. He was in regular contact with #3 (A+ list mostly movie actor), who during this part of the experience was very excited about the direction he was taking the music for the project. #1 enlisted many of his top tier friends and collaborators to write songs for the film. He even brought in an older gentleman, a songwriting legend from days gone by named #4. #1 hand picked one of his unsung songs from the 70’s to be a song featured in the movie. A beautiful song. #4 had lost his only son years back and had basically sold all his guitars and, in his sadness, had stepped out of music almost all together. #1 had been a new friend who had given #4 some hope and a new, pure start.

Anyways as time drew near for #1 to go to LA to begin tracking for the soundtrack, things seemed brighter and brighter. It seemed as if the music for this film was going to be top notch and really authentic.

#1 brought the band he uses to LA to record these songs that he’d curated for the album and this is where he met #5 (A/A- list singer). From the moment it began, #5 was unstable. Apparently she was claiming sobriety but gave off the vibe of someone who was still on the sauce and more.  Anyways, she’s there in the studio with #1 and his band who have worked for months to make this a reality. Now mind you, #3 has been on board with #1’s vision from day one and has been excited for where it is all going.

The minute they get in the studio #5 immediately is telling #1 that “nobody buys records with live drums on them” and is, at every turn, attempting to undermine #1’s role in all of this. #1 is a sensitive guy. He’s also not one to fight. So often when battled, he will just take a step back. But in this case he wanted to stand by his vision which everyone from the studio to #3 had been on board with.

#5 also had her boyfriend there. I won’t name him because he is someone that I consider a friend, but we aren’t really that close. Fair weather friend at times I believe. But our families are tied together closely so I won’t name him here but I’m sure you can figure it out.

Anyways, at every turn, she would turn to him and, despite his previous stances, he would always defer to her. #3 also did the same thing when face-to-face with her ire.

She would speak to the engineers and #1’s assembled band and assistant like slaves. Really rude type s**t. And if someone wasn’t paying attention, she would drop something and bend over (in the short dress she was wearing) revealing that she was not wearing any underwear. This would happen multiple times throughout the day and evening.

Then any time someone would disagree with her and agree with #1, she would burst into aggressive tears and claim misogyny, “that the world only listens to men and women don’t have a voice”.

Needless to say, nothing ever came of the session and #1 went home frustrated and disappointed.

Once #1 returned to Nashville he had calls with the movie studio and #3 and they agreed to let #1 cut the songs in Nashville with placeholder vocals in place. It is important to mention as well that #1 had arranged for the great players who he uses a lot to be in the film. All that paperwork had been done and it was the plan.

He cut some tracks and they were fantastic, including the #4 track. He sent them all to the studio and they, as well as #3 again loved it.

What happened next? #5 told the studio she was out unless her boyfriend and his band were in the film instead of #1’s band. Once they agreed to that, she and her boyfriend went and recorded all the songs over (including the #4 song). She once again played the “it’s my way or the highway card on this”. #1 was quietly excommunicated from the project and her tracks and her man’s band was used.

The real kicker? Her and her man took writing credit on poor old #4’s song.

There is a positive note to the original LA story. After the session was over and #5 and everyone but #1 and the band were gone, #6 (permanent A lister who has been in one A+ list group and one A++ list group), who had been next door recording, walked in with two giant bottles of whiskey and said “sounds like you guys need some relief” and poured them all drinks and took them all driving in his ultra fast Tesla. I gained some respect for him that day. But lost all from #5.

I don't get how someone she can claim writing credit - doesn't he just need to contest and back up with the other musicians involved?

Took my son and group of his college buddies to dinner and conversation turned to concerts. I asked how many had been to a concert where a band actually played or they saw instruments on stage. My son was the only one. I shed a tear and ordered another martini.

Agree with previous guesses...Dave Cobb, Cooper, Gaga.

Is Gaga dating Mark Ronson? He's separated, right? There's a song that's being discussed as written by them called "The Shallow". Can't find who the original songwriter is, though, and that's kind of the point of this blind in a way...to give the guy the credit. Hm.

pkelly491 said...

Dave Cobb is the best thing to ever happen to music in Nashville, if he is #1 that would be awesome if he and Enty were friends

I think it's this

#1 - Cobb
#2 - A Star is Born (Remake)
#3 - Cooper
#4 - Jeffrey Steele?
#5 - Gaga
#6 - Grohl

SherryDahling said...

Definitely for the Star is Born remake.
I pick Lukas Nelson (son of Willie) for #1 - they said he "collaborated" on the song "Find Yourself" for the soundtrack
Gaga for #5 & Mark Ronson for her boyfriend? He's listed as being part of the soundtrack.
Jason Isbell for #3 or Cobb

Or maybe Cobb for #1 and Nelson for #3

Desi Derium said...

Dave Grohl just always comes across as a genuinely good person. So much respect for that.

My Dave Grohl Story: I had the opportunity to spend the bulk of a show (Dramarama, Mouse House of Blues ca. 2004) hanging out with DG, didn't know who he was then LOL if you can believe it. We spent the evening with my gang and him buying each other Coors Lights (don't judge, I can't Guinness my way through long events) and people kept asking me to introduce them to "my friend." I didn't get it until after the show. I then invited him to join me and my gang at ESPN Zone because he looked like he would like to hang out but he said he had to take his date (big bodyguard guy) home. He did not look very happy that evening and I wondered about this until later I read he was divorcing wife #1 around that time. Super super nice guy even nicer as he realized I had zero idea who he was :)

HoneyRyder said...

May be a reach but could blind reference to “boyfriend” be her movie boyfriend; i.e. Bradley Cooper and his band? Cooper mentioned in interview that they were co-writers.

fustian said...

On the face of it, saying that nobody uses live drums any more seems completely stupid.

But.

Gaga is right as far as pop music goes. Pop music has always been manufactured. The latest version can be characterized as urban electronic beats with Abba-styled European melodies on top of them.

Even so, I'd bet the Nashville version of this music is a lot better. It would be interesting to be able to hear both versions.

I had Dave Grohl confused with the Pearl Jam guy. Nice to know there are decent people in showbiz.

Someone asked about stealing songwriting credits. It is easy to do, even easier when the creator doesn't have their intellectual property registered with Library of Congress. There is also the poor man's copyright (sending e-mail to yourself). In any case it is easy to do. Ask Beyonce & Tay Tay.

I don't know how it could be Dave Grohl for #6. There are only a few A++ bands in the world ever, and Nirvana's not one of them. It's got to be Sir Paul. Eric Clapton is #4? Description fits.

Krab said...

Nirvana is totally A++

Anonymous said...

So her argument was no one buys fake manufactured pop music that has live drums?

AkhaldanSolo said...

I can't specifically judge David Grohl on the fact that he was with Nirvana for so long and STILL hasn't said anything about what they were up to in those days but you all really have to loosen up on your Idols. There's really something to be said about people that place these people on pedestals as 'role models' because most often, as we have seen ample evidence of here, most of them are dirtbags, and essentially, although many of us would like to believe we are upstanding worthy people, deep down, inherently, because of the trouble in this world, know you are a real piece of shit. Not that you really are it is just that your CONDITIONING, and quite possibly the shape of your life through uncontrollable factors because of that created unreality I described before, has made you feel as though that were true.

Now, I'm not a super religious person, but there are forces in this world that are attempting to make it look like God, from the Bible, is real by plaguing mankind with with so many problems it couldn't come from anywhere else but on high, but, this is simply a magic trick, through long years of preparation, to convince you that it is true.

One of the ways they are going to do this is by destroying your IDOLS. remember, "Thou shall not worship the Golden Calf" Moses said to his followers. Today people have built up strong bonds and relationships with role models who look and act like they have it all together until, oops, this one turns up in a child sex scandal or that one murders or beats a spouse.

This is the snafu they created for the black man when they ALLOWED cosby to do what he did for all those years and then TOOK HIM DOWN as a part of his deal with the devil, fame and fortune for a favor. You go DOWN in the end because we can't have good moral among the black population less they rise up against us, we must show them their place.

This is LITERAL Kabbalistic MAGICK, along with every other technique they use to accomplish their goals like Problem/Reaction/Solution and Hegelian Dialectic.

Bryan Singer and the X-Men is another one, imagine how all those poor precious snowflake minds are going to get bent knowing that the man that created their Idols was a child molesting and murdering luciferian?

These things have psychological value, I know, I invested much of my life in the hippy utopia of the Grateful Dead before I realised, too late, that I was trapping myself in an unsustainable communist sandtrap.

Be careful people, there is high magick around us.

Can somebody get me my damn golf shoes?

God Speed, God Bless.

Somebody mentioned it above, but I think that Cobb #1 and #5's boyfriend is Lukas Nelson. Looks like Gaga was on the outs with the previous dude when they shot the movie in 2016, and probably before the new dude. Cobb's family is probably tied to Willie's family.

gauloise said...

According to IMDB they shot A Star is Born in April 2017

I think the ones that mentioned Billy Joe Shaver for #4 got that one too.

So #1. Dave Cobb
#2. A Star is Born
#3. Cooper
#4. Billy Joe Shaver
#5. Gaga with boyfriend Lukas Nelson and his band
#6. Grohl - probably working on "Sonic Highway".

cheesy said...

Hmm, they started shooting in April 2017, but Gaga was attached in August of 2016. I'm guessing that they started working on the music before filming. Cooper had to get the songs down, etc. Gaga mentioned that working on the movie killed her relationship with Kinney. It would also explain how Nelson's band replaced #1's band in the movie because they hadn't started shooting yet. I also saw an article that Gaga was responsible for bringing Nelson and his band into the fold.

Personally, I would go with Foo Fighters being A++ and Nirvana being A+, but that's just me.

HayMcMusic said...

And yet, GaGa always plays live piano and has latched on to the likes of Tony Bennett, who is the opposite of manufactured in the studio. Live drums can always have production added, and who knows, it might’ve added the authenticity she lacks yet constantly preaches. Sounds like a desperate attempt at retaining any authority or control she no longer has... Plus anything Dave Cobb touches turns to gold, so she may have missed out on finally recording a hit!

Agree with @cheesy summary. Definitely #4 not Clapton. Wth would try and steal his song or push him out, the man is permanent A+++++ genius. Carries much more weight than Gaga. I don't think Bob Dylan had a son named Matt that died. Maybe you are thinking of actor Matt Dillon's career that died in the late 90s? The blind says that it's his only son anyway, and we know that the Wallflowers dude is still kicking around along with a couple of his brothers.

Eric Clapton is the only singer with an only child who happened to be a son that died. Poor kid fell out of a window.

pkelly491 said...

But per the blind #4 is not known as a singer (Clapton probably would be labeled as a musician though) he is known as a songwriter. It's not Clapton.

Still think Shaver is the best answer so far for #4. He is definitely legendary, and his only son Eddy died of a heroin OD about 15 years ago. He did release an album in 2014, though...

Trixie Comments said...

Except that Shaver never sold all his gear and got out of music. That mean ol' SOB keeps touring and getting in and out of jams around Texas. He has written some great songs, but is a piece of work. I'm thinking this might be more of a Nashville legend who has fallen off the radar.

Dusty Fairy said...

Yes, Robert Plant lost his son many years ago, but he doesn’t fit. Nirvana are definitely A+++ and FF A+. Anyone who was around during Nirvana knows that their influence was astonishing. They absolutely changed the landscape. FF are incredible and have been around longer and sold tons of records, but I could put 10 people in a room and only 3 of them could name a FF song. Maybe. Both of my parents (and my kids) know Nirvana and Kurt but don’t know FF or Dave. (And I love Dave.... I’m just trying to provide some perspective...)

Who is #4, the songwriter who lost his son and withdrew from the music world?

Kris Kristofferson's children are all still alive.

Billy Joe Shaver did not withdraw from music, and continued to release albums and tour regularly after his son's death.

Freddy Weller lost his son in 2004, but had largely withdrawn from music in the late 1980s, releasing his last album in 1987.

Eric Clapton lost his son in 1991, and has sold off a portion of his guitar collection, but did not withdraw from music. Quite the contrary, he wrote a multi-Grammy winning song alluding to his son's death, which provided a huge boost to his career and was his biggest hit. And of course, it's hard to imagine a guy who spent five decades as a permanent A++ rock star ("Clapton is God") being described as a "songwriting legend from days gone by" looking for a fresh start.

I don't think anyone has identified #4 yet.

@Nubian Princess and @MatineeIdolx, regarding the game that Nirvana changed, how do you see it (or hear it) during, say, the rest of the 1990s after Cobain died? It seems to me that the game was massively changed by hip-hop around then. Rock seems to have been moving more and more toward niche status and perhaps even into semi-obscurity. Thanks in advance.

Since you asked, I was referring to the time prior to Nirvana. Poison, Whitesnake, etc. Nothing but a good time, Girls girls girls, you get the idea. When Nirvana hit, I was a senior in High School. We all changed. Expedintally. I am bias, I have a signed photo blown up in my hallway of Kurt. He changed everything. And dammit, my 18 year old free up with it in the hallway. HE knew it's ok to be weird, and conflicted. His first concert was Pearl Jam at age 8. Id like to think he's able to be weird because of it. It's not a niche, it's a different state of mind, not previously accepted. Please don't take my response as hostile, I'm trying to answer as best I can explain the past.
