If you are invited to a cannibal wedding, make sure you leave BEFORE they toast the bride and groom.

I don't know . I haven't seen any of the nominated films. DOn't know anyone who has. That's how irrelevant these award shows are these days.

I'd like to see Timothee win it, but I think Oldham will

Should: DDL
Will: Oldman

@Chase
I hear you. They're rarely merit-based anyway.

This year will be Oldman. Obviously. Other options are 2 veteran dudes with multiple Oscars, and 2 young dudes who nobody heard of till last year.
It's not even a question. Oldman is damn lucky #metoo got Franco (and *not* him), because that would have been his only real competition.

Day-Lewis is always a shoe-in, and his performances are consistently top-notch. I'd never feel he didn't 'deserve' an Oscar. He was captivating in Phantom Thread.

I rewatched 15 Million Merits last night (where I first saw Kaluuya) and thought his performance there and in Get Out were extremely powerful. I believe he's a serious contender, but many might not think so because of Get Out's subject matter. :\

If Oldman wins, it'll just reconfirm that the Academy is bullsh!t (but didn't we all already know that?)

I hope Oldman wins. The ex wife #3 who made the accusation is a mental case. I know someone who got to observe her and Gary together and she felt sorry for Gary and could see it being the other way around. I remember when she tried to commit suicide in front of her daughter by David Fincher whilst still married to Gary. That is when he called it quits.

Gary was more likely the one being abused and she dragged him into court for years after the divorce because she was bitter she didn't get her pay day - she got little from David Fincher because he got sole custody of their child who was a toddler and their marriage was shortlived. Gary was in debt from the movie he made Nil by Mouth, good movie by the way, so she made the mistake of marrying a Hollywood actor at the wrong time, too bad and Gary got sole custody of their young boys. That tells you a lot about her - the family court judges knew she was a nutter.

That is the problem with the #MeToo movement because when you are wrong the damage is already done. If she was assaulted she should have called police and given the fact she kept dragging him into court after the divorce she hardly seemed to be the kind of woman that was shy about calling the authorities or if she did, no charges were laid.

Oldman will win because he transformed the most. But I want Daniel K to win.

Oldman prosthetic role will win....these Oscars became so predictable, last year I won app 1500 dollars on betting on main categories for the first time. :)

Who should?
Love DDL, but he played the card - my last movie - and we've been there before plus this one is really average.
So out of nominated ones then Timothee, but that movie IMO just shows pedo obsession in HW since every scene with Timothee and that rich wannabe an actor guy look like that. And if movie was not set in rural beautiful Italy that gave it romantic note, no one would see this movie as great one, but sick one. But the kiddo played his part great.

Outside nominated ones - James Mcavoy for Split. I feel this is the biggest snub since Gyllenhaal for Nightcrawler, at least nomination was deserved.

Daniel Day-Lewis

Since 1986 your best bet for winning a Best Actor Oscar has been to play a real person with 12 actors taking that path to glory. The second best way to win a Best Actor Oscar since 1986 has been to be Daniel Day Lewis who has won three times.

Completely agree!

It sounds like Gary Oldman will win, I haven't seen Darkest Hour or Denzel's movie so my favorite is Timothee Chalamet with Daniel Day Lewis as the runner up.

@sc - Daniel Kaluuya was terrific in 15 Million Merits - definitely one of my favorite episodes of the entire series.

Question: Why do people who don't see the movies and think the awards are so stupid feel compelled to comment on these? STFU already, it's boring.

I would like to see Daniel K get it but of course he won't this shizz is beyond rigged just like politics.

I want to hate a DDL performance just so o don’t feel I’m biased. But he’s the best and ridiculously watchable. Phantom Thread should win in all ways possible.

@sc thanks!!!seems you are my soulmate in these Oscars opinions :)

Daniel K for Get Out. LOVE.

Saw Roman J Israel by accident. Formulaic crap. Denzil is becoming a one-trick pony as an actor

@Jen Accusations against Gary Oldman are not new - he's been a complete dick for many, many years. Not saying his ex isn't a psycho, but she may not have started out that way...

Oldman

Gary Oldman

Chalamet deserves the Oscar BUT the Academy voters are very sexist against young men. Notice the voters prefer old white men so sadly Gary Oldman wins. It is unfair how younger handsome male actors are treated.

DDL!

Mem said...

@Squee Too true, it is boring. I'll never understand why people love to go on internet comment sections to brag to strangers about how they haven't seen/heard of things/don't know who people are. Is ignorance hip now?
Chase, if you and everyone you know haven't even seen Get Out, it sounds like maybe you're the ones that are out of touch with movies, not the Oscars. The whole idea of "they're irrelevant because *I* haven't seen any of them" is pretty stupid.

Mem said...

Oldman will probably win. Day-Lewis probably should, but I'd also be happy if there was a big surprise and Chalamet or Kaluuya won.

Because of politics, I think they will give it to one of the black actors or Timothy because he played a gay guy. This means no disrespect to their performances! The Oscars likes ratings and sending a message. I don't think Oldman or Day-Lewis is going to bring in ratings this year. Sorry to be so cynical. :(

it's a shame that Call Me by Your Name had to be so gross because that kid is a good actor.

I really hope Timothée Chalamet pulls an upset. It would be funny and awesome, and he'll deserve to win too.

Should- Kaluuya
Will - Oldman
(DDL was fine, but it's Oldman's "turn")

Court b said...

I saw them all, and I completely agree.

PghGirl said...

Daniel Kaluuya...I really liked that movie.

BlissBoo said...

Its Oldman's "turn", plus he was excellent in his role. I personally loved DDL, and very sad to see him retire, but he has his Oscars he can admire at home.

Scandi Sanskrit said...

Does DDL's brand of "method acting" (because I know actors are all different in how they function) involve assuming the character's name (and reasonding to being called that name) too? Because WOODCOCK is an amazing name! Haha.

Scandi Sanskrit said...

*Responding God dammit. Is "reasonding" even a word in the English language, autocorrect?! FFS Apple.

Scandi Sanskrit said...

ALso Ankler should be given an award for writing that the Oscars are obsolete, basically.
