Blind Item #4

He didn't just come right out and call this permanent A+ list mostly movie actor who is an Academy Award winner/nominee a racist, but this A- list director made it clear to everyone who can read between the lines that is what he is saying in an interview. It is true too.

I bet it's that. He slams him in his new special.

there's NO way ben affleck counts as 'permanent A+ list actor yet' this is somebody else.

It broke my heart to write Affleck name

parissucksliterally said...

beedopcowboy, Affleck has been around 20 years now - is a 2 time Oscar winner.
Yes, he counts as Permanent A list.

IanPhlegming said...

Affleck's grandparents or great grandparents owned slaves and he tried to cover it up on the PBS genealogy special, right?

His ancestors did, he didn't know about it before hand.

Ryan Coogler and Sylvester Stallone.

IdaBish said...

Coogler/Stallone is the correct answer:

"On 2015's "Creed," the second film he directed, Coogler said he faced doubts from veteran "Rocky" star Sylvester Stallone — who had also directed four films in the series — about his ability to reboot the boxing franchise.

"One thing he was concerned with was me and [star Michael B. Jordan's] work ethic," Coogler shared. "He would always say, 'Do you know how much work this is gonna require?' For us, it was, like, never letting him see us not working."

you got it! coogler & stalllone

@parissucksliterally

are you new? cause you must be with that thought. 20 years and 2 oscars does NOT equal A+ permanent actor. maybe if you stick around, you'll get to know how it works. sit back and watch the veteran commenters work. or the trolls. whatever you desire.

Paris is definitely NOT new Beebop. Been here much longer than me even.

Yeah, man. Learn from the real pros. In 12 years or so you might be qualified to do a "+1" comment. If you apply yourself.

Hardly his fault, a lot of people's ancestors owned African slaves - whites, Native Americans, freed black people.

@Ddonna Tarttty

Yes. PBS almost cancelled the show because of it.

The dude married to Julie Bowen's character on Modern Family has black ancestors. He could not hide his displeasure from the camera. No joke.

Thank you sandybrook, I have been here since the beginning. Who the fuck is that guy anyway?

Paris has been here for a long ass time. It's just Affleck is so annoying. I kind of thought he was because he freaked out over JLo being PR. It just seemed so ridiculous.

I'll go with Coogler and Stallone if only because Ridley Scott's got to be permanent A if not A+.

People are only accountable for their own actions in life. They are not accountable for the actions of long dead ancestors. Are all Black people guilty of the North African Barbary slave trade that enslaved over 2 million White Europeans between the 16th to 19th centuries?

Mark Wahlberg for the A+ racist actor?

I watch that show on PBS & the one Lisa Kudow produces. I’ve even played along with a “drinking game” on Twitter. If you watch enough of these types of shows, you know what commonalities will be featured/highlighted.
If you are from the South and/or have Southern Ancestors, the chances are extremely high that they were slave owners.
*You can’t change the past but you can try to do much better in the future.

So Outrageous said...

Ok this is about Sylvester Stallone. According to Ryan Coogler, the African-American director who directed both "Creed" and "Black Panther", Stallone was fearful that neither Coogler or Michael B. Jordan would be hard workers and Stallone questioned their work ethic even though he had never worked with either Coogler or Jordan before. Ironically, Michael B. Jordan started his career as a child actor on the ABC soap opera "All My Children" and has had quite the rise to fame. Moreover, there has never been any bad press about Michael B. Jordan or Coogler, only accolades. So, Stallone had no reason to make such assumptions about either man's work ethic other than the stereotypical idea that certain people are lazy.

So Outrageous said...

....and to be honest, it was Michael B. Jordan's stellar performance in "Creed" that brought the movie to life. The Academy only gave Stallone the Oscar nomination/award that year (2015) because he's getting old and just like Christopher Plummer they knew it was long overdue. And he really should've won for the original Rocky. But there's less fanfare and press when you give awards to dead celebrities because the dead can't give 'thank you speeches' and do press junkets.

I know it doesn't matter because of Sly's other shady reputation, but l don't think hes racist. Racist paranoia is everywhere

JL said...

Nope nope nope. He did not show displeasure in the least. His ancestors story is an interesting one. A strong woman who moved out West for free land. The family had heard tell of their black ancestors. He was not surprised, if anything he was pleased for the sake of his adopted black children.

Chris said...

Stallone was caught on tape calling a paparazzi the n-word under his breath. I was always surprised a bigger deal wasn't made of that.

Yup yup yup Affleck forced PBS and Cornel West to suppress the info on his ancestors. Not sure who blew the whistle, but there was quite a bit of trampling over each other when it came to light.

So if I'm considering working with you, and I ask whether you're really up to it because I'm an old veteran in the business and you're an up-and-comer, and you say you are, and then I agree to work with you and lend my considerable reputation to the project, and all goes well....

...then the takeaway from all this is that I'm a racist because you're black? That's mighty thin. Does anyone ever stop and think what the eventual effect will be of throwing around such charges so casually? Maybe the next big star who gets asked to be involved in such a project just passes, figuring it's too risky.

There have to be better reasons to hate Stallone. I think we've even heard some here.

OKC Teacher, to your comment:

"If you are from the South and/or have Southern Ancestors, the chances are extremely high that they were slave owners."

No, no, no and no. Having grown up in the Deep South in a backwoods rural area with family ties to the area that reaches back generations, I can promise you that neither side of my family, nor the ancestors of my peers ever owned slaves. Poor whites in the South barely had money money for day-to-day living, much less to purchase a slave.

You dont understand how racism works. Please read a book on race/racism actually written by a black person, then come back & comment from a place of knowledge & understanding.

He def is. No blind here.

+1 Pay it forward. It helps unbind your ancestors. Just do good & be good to others no matter what color they are.

Urban Rosebud said...

Why is not okay to out white people as racists when they most blatantly are?

Why are white people so afraid to deal with their racist past?

Let's just get out of denial & heal this festering boil on our society. Why keep running from it?

Why deny when it is not getting any better & it is dead-ass in our faces every day???

Urban Rosebud said...

Cali-

If it were a one off, no doubt. It is endemic & subtle which is how racism is able to continue. Racism has become passive aggressive & even more soul sucking.

Racism comes with an attitude & a tone that is specifically reserved for you as an African-American.

If a black person tells you something / someone is racist, it/ they most likely is/ are. That is the last place we want to go.

Turn on the t.v.- blatant racism taking place every day- esp.with our young folk.

Check out a book titled "Racism without Racists" for a more in depth description.

@Molly I agree with you.
Your argument that “My ancestors were much too poor to own slaves” is one I’m quite familiar with.

I’ve heard many older family members use that exact same argument. Though, I would love for this
to be true, the Genealogical Documents (Wills, Census Records, Family Bibles, etc) show otherwise. Most were passed on
to family members through Wills. I’ve never found any “bills of sale”.
Ironically, one branch of my family tree, Choctaw Indians, who endured and survived the brutal conditions of being the 1st
group of Native Americans on the infamous “Trail of Tears”, were the largest group of slave owners. Apparently, they stayed (I assume as
Sharecroppers) after the Emancipation Proclaimation.

Molly said...

@OKC Teacher: You make some very important points. Those primary source documents you mentioned show it all, the good, the bad and the ugly.

Anecdotally, speaking about specifically my dad's side of the family in the Mississippi Delta, owning anything was an impossibility. They didn't even have indoor plumbing until the 50s --- 1950s, that is. I know that sounds ludicrous, but it's God's honest truth.

Further, for many poor people, they made their own forced labor: their kids. My dad is one of 11 kids, his mom was one of 10 kids, with previous generations also having children in the double digits. I don't see how a woman can physically bear that many pregnancies, but that's neither here nor there.

It's still so hard to believe that our own country could have put your ancestors through horrific journeys such as the Trail of Tears, and the Triangle Slave Trade is unimaginable for its barbarity. What kind of humans would think it was ok to ever treat other humans thusly?

Anyway, thanks for the banter. I really liked your comment bout sharecropping and the Emancipation Proclamation --- right on the mark.

Doubting a black person doesn't make you a racist. Watch Ryan on YouTube breaking a Black Panther scene and he sounds unneducated, unprepared and he's really hard to follow. So many slang words and no focus at all. I'd totally doubt his capabilities during an interview, he sounds too immature and full of himself like a fresh out of college arts student.

Bubbles said...

Viking Song, to answer your question- No, all Black people aren't responsible for the North African Barbary Slave Trade. As a matter of fact, no Black person is responsible for it considering that the North Africans are ARAB! And this happened between the 16th and 18th centuries as a result of them taking prisoners during pirating raids. But other than that, I'm sure you're right!
