The Lovely Bones Trailer

So, I have been waiting to see this movie for what seems like forever. This week the trailer finally was released and my biggest fears have been realized. Mark Wahlberg is going to ruin it. I don't know what made everyone think he could play the role of the father, but when I see him in the trailer he is the same character he always plays in every movie. That works fine for some movie about a football player or as one of a group of friends but it doesn't work here. At all. Susan Sarandon looks amazing and Stanley Tucci looks scary as hell, but Mark Wahlberg is going to destroy this movie.

  1. I loved the book, had been delighted to read it was going to be a film, and was instantly deflated when I learned that Wahlberg was going to be involved. To me, he's basically useless, and the way he speaks makes my back shiver.

He could have played the killer fairly convincingly, though.

Gosling was a much better choice.

  5. Did Peter Jackson have a gastric bypass? He looks sooo thin, if he did it naturally great for him, just curious is all.

  6. Too late, it's already been ruined by a script that turns the story of a family in turmoil and the girl who watches over them from the next world, to a murder mystery.

  7. Saoirse Ronan will probably be great, as usual, as Susie.

  8. Wow. That looks damn good. Damn good. And I hated the book.

  9. I'm still excited to see it, I loved the book.

  10. I CAN'T STAND MARK WAHLBERG'S VOICE,
IT'S FLAT.....DO NOT UNDERSTAND WITH ALL THE OTHER ACTORS WAS HE REALLY THE ONLY ONE AVAILABLE TO REPLACE RYAN ?...BUT I LOVED THE TRAILER...THE GIRL WAS GREAT.

  11. Lol, Harriet! I forgot about that. *shivers*

  12. I agree Gosling was too young for the part, but I'd a hell of a lot rather have someone too young that someone who can't act. :(

  13. I hate hate hate Mark Wahlberg's "acting."Having him replace Ryan Gosling is just...idiotic and a major step down for the movie.

  14. This reminds me again that one of the reasons I love Jason Statham so much is that he knows his limits. He knows what he's great at, and he sticks with it. As Enty said, Wahlberg is good for a certain kind of movie, but not one that requires any subtlety.

  15. Based on that trailer alone, I wouldn't see this movie. I'll have to read the book. I read the description on the novel and it seemed like such a dreary subject I left it alone.

  16. It's kind of like What Dreams may Come. On the one hand you're in the actual world in another you are learning about this in between kind of place where the dead gets no rest, really.
Certain strokes for certain folks. Read the book, couldn't understand all of the hype. Saw the trailer and I think I'll take a pass until it hits DVD. Or hell, until it hits TNT.

  17. Wahlberg will be fine. Watch...Boogie Nights, Departed, Three Kings, I heart Huckabees...when under the direction of a great filmmaker...he does very well. And the same will happen here. Peter Jackson is known for firing people once production starts...so if Wahlberg wasnt good enough or what he wanted...he would have dropped him w/o hesitation just like Ryan Gosling and Stuart Townsend who was cast to play Aragorn but was fired a couple days within the shoot.

  18. Stu wasn't Aragorn material? I'm shocked! Shocked I tell you! LOL

  19. Kristen I agree.. I hated the book, but the trailer looks great.

  20. Can't watch a movie where a kid gets murdered.

  21. I have to agree. Mark Wahlberg is good in action movies, but has no emotional range.

  22. I love, love, loved the book. I really got sucked into her idea of heaven. The trailer looks great. Wahlberg didn't bother me much but we'll see how he does in the movie.

Mark W. is so so in some movies. He did pretty good in the Departed but a lot of good actors were what made the movie great. Mark for some reason can not show emotions he is too stiff when it comes to emotions.

  24. He didn't bother me in this trailer at all. I thought he looked fine.

  25. Her idea of heaven in the book depressed the ever-loving hell out of me. That's where I lost interest.

  26. Wahlberg doesn't bother me that much. He can be quite good - he was great in Boogie Nights, The Departed, etc. He will never be known as the world's greatest actor but I don't mind him that much.

What sells me on this most of all is Peter Jackson. I love his movies.

  27. I think Mark Wahlberg is going to do fine as well. Susan Sarandon is a great choice for the grandmother!

  28. I absolutely cannot watch or read anything that involves someone killing a child. It stays with me for weeks on end. But I agree with Enty. Mark Wahlberg is an actor good at certain types o roles. Not this kind.

  29. I think Marky Mark looks fine in this trailer. Well, except for his hair. But I, too, think he did well in The Departed and I Heart Huckabees.

  30. Jason Statham - love him. That voice.

  31. What disappoints me most is Wahlberg's wig.

In this day and age, can't Hollywood come up with better wigs? They can do all kinds of crazy computer generated effects, but wigs often look no better than a crappy high school production of Our Town.

    C'mon now!

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think it's the same wig he wore in that football movie.

This trailer makes me want to read the book now. If it isn't a murder mystery, what is it?

Don't get all the hype about The Depahted. Didn't think it was that great (talk about no wardrobe budget for the psychiatrist/girlfriend - nearly all her scenes seemingly shot in one day with the same outfit), and seemed somewhat laughable at times. Mark's role wasn't all that big. He based all 5 minutes of that character on the cop who always caught him? Really?

    Pshaw.

  33. I thought the novel started out strong, but then began spiraling all over the place by about the third chapter. It didn't get interesting again until very close to the end, but by then I'd totally had it with the solemn, Oprah-esque, most-men-are-evil overtones.

Peter Jackson did direct a small, very dark and amazing movie about 15 years ago called Heavenly Creatures, so maybe he can rescue this one. Maybe not. I'd see it for the wonderful Michael Imperioli, though. Welcome back, Christufuh.

  34. I'll have to think about seeing it. Peter Jackson looks amazing :)

    ReplyDelete
  35. Love Heavenly Creatures!

Also, thin Peter Jackson now looks so much like Dom Monaghan, it's FREAKY!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Michael Imperioli....I just adore him! The movie looks better than the book. Didn't think I'd be interested but I'm going to have to see it now, Wahlberg notwithstanding.
