He also asked people to be respectful because that person (who is not MV) also reads the blog. 2.) Another post from '06 where EL praised Britney for being a smart businesswoman and a good person with whom he had a good professional and friendly relationship. Also, Britney's album sales have not been as high as her debut album. I am willing to bet it's someone we haven't thought of yet. Someone A+ possibly with multiple Grammys and thought of as tremendously talented. If it is JLo, would it shatter the music industry? I'm stumped.
I believe it was Jax who said that anyone from Ontario would know that this is ISN'T Shania. I agree wholeheartedly. Everyone in my old town knew Shania (Eileen) because she sang all over the place, including at one of the more popular resorts. She can definitely sing. As for Celine, she's actually been well-known in Canada as a francophone singer since the early eighties, and has proven time and time again that she has magic pipes.

Not Gwen. No Doubt released their first album in '91, and got dropped from their label due to a near complete lack of interest. They did a self-release in...'93, I think, before Tragic Kingdom took off in '95. She sounded exactly the same on TK and everything that came after as she did on those forgotten earlier albums.

What if this is a lesser known person, maybe huge in Latin America, or Europe, who sold millions, toured, etc, but isn't on the A-list, but their producer is? Do NOT understand the Britney guesses. She fits the time frame and the marriage kids thing but so do a lot of people. Nobody has even thought she has a great voice. If you were going to get somebody else to sing while someone else was the 'face' of the music, you'd get someone with a better voice surely?

Cajun Cutie, that's why it's neither of them. It's a well known fact that they are sweetened (and sometimes replaced almost entirely) by other singers. Enty says it would be shocking if it came out. Everybody already knows, so why make it a blind?

More water on the Shania fire. I worked at Deerhurst the same time she was in the stage show, and she can sing. I remember her brother talking about the record companies that were after her, so why a hoax? I think she doesn't make music anymore because she's a down to earth person who has more money than she'll ever need. She and Mutt divorced because he stepped out.
As others from Canada have said, it can't be either Shania or Celine. So you can stop thinking it is. They were popular in Canada waaaay before they hit it big in the States and I have heard them sing live before. Same voice in interviews and recordings.
Not Michelle Branch. She keep posting new videos on youtube singing with just a guitar. She does LiveStream for twitter fans and sing live requested songs and she sounds the same.
I just don't think the reveal that Michelle Branch didn't sing her own songs would blow the music industry apart and be a bigger scandal than Milli Vanilli was. And her recorded singing voice is pleasant (like any girl you'd hear in a high school choir) but not that impressive.
Sarah McLaughlin would be more scandalous, but I really don't think it's her. There's a performance of hers that I love on Youtube of "Ice Cream" and she sounds as good as she does on the record, but there's lots of adlibbing. I don't think you'd be able to add what she did there flawlessly into a lip synched song.

well, Michelle branch was just a guess because I'm almost convinced the producer is Guy Oseary, which would be VERY scandalous. He is very well known in the industry. ENty kept referring to the producer as 'the Guy' or 'easier for Guy to pull off' always with a capital G. why would you capitalize the G? once is a typo but it occurs 2 or 3 times in the blind.
Guy Oseary's other female clients include, Madonna and Alanis. Michelle seems the most likely out of thise three.

Especially if you listen to Janet's last albums. Her voice is barely above a whisper. Her earlier music was very powerful. Black Cat for example and Control. She doesn't sound the way she speaks either on those albums.
I thought Thalia,too, especially since she's married to Tommy Motolla, but a quick search shows that she was big in Latin America before coming to America. She started in a girl group. It seems hard to be part of a group, then have someone ghost sing for her during a solo career.
As others have pointed out, at the time of the original posting, and at the time of Ent finding out MV's secret in the first place, it would have been absolutely scandalous if it was Britney. I think outside of our CDaN world, it still would be - not now maybe, but to find out shenanigans were going on at her pinnacle? It can't be Britney. I remember she did a VMA performance back in the day and she was doing a medley. When she first came off it was so off-key and awful and then the next song turned into a pre-recorded song. I doubt they would have had her attempt to sing live if S was doing her songs.

I don't think it's Janet Jackson because I don't think she's generally known for having a great voice. She has a pleasant voice and she's a great dancer (and beautiful) but that's pretty much it. It's always been clear that her voice gets some help in the studio and that she prob wouldn't be famous if she weren't a Jackson.

'Kay, I'm gonna pitch one out there based on the assumption that Enty is fudging dates and time intervals to cover his butt.
Sade. Torchy singer (and aren't the images associated with the blind are a clue?) who suddenly appeared on the charts and made it big. She even won an American Music Award and scored two Grammy nominations in...2002, if I recall correctly. She was even awarded an OBE by the Queen.
She can be a bit of a beeyotch, as a cop who arrested her on a traffic infraction in Jamaica learned. And she's quite beautiful, so I can see her putting down someone with better pipes but worse looks.

Its never stated that MV isn't talented or can't sing (we've just made that assumption) so those from Canada attesting to her talent don't convince me it can't still be her. The only thing nagging me about this guess is the statement someone else made about how Nashville would LOVE to expose her so it would have been hard for them to keep this secret.
Wasn't there some scandel with Martha Wash and C&C Music Company back in the 90's regarding the group using her voice and she not being credited for it? Also I wonder if we should be looking at a artist that has been around for ages. Jlo, Britney etc have all been targets of lip synching for years so I can't see that being much of a scandel if it came out that they did. But someone like Diana Ross on the other hand never really had that much of a strong voice. When she was with the Supremes, the othe members pretty well made up for her lack of vocals. Then when she went solo her voice seemed to be so much stronger and don't forget she had Berry Gordy's support for many years(and also had his child)
I can appreciate our Canadian friends staunchly defending their fellow Canadians (they seemed to have all been ruled out) but the clips I have heard of early Shania seemed to suggest very little range to me. Yes, she could sing but did she sing well enough to go global in the way she did? My ex-daughter-in-law has a better voice than most commercial singers and she still sings in lounges.
I have nothing against Twain personally, I just think she fits the description if we can exclude the 2000 date. The chanteuse picture Enty used in the new MV blind had a Canadian copyright.
It's not anyone who isn't thought to be a good singer since no one would be surprised to find out Jessica Simpson (or anyone of that ilk) can't sing well. It's not a little-known singer either (and frankly, I barely know who Jessica Simpson is). It's not someone whose "sweetening" has already been leaked since, again, it wouldn't shake-up the world and quite possibly Enty wouldn't have to dance as much as he's doing (although his legal participation would limit his ability to disclose any detail).
All the American singers are game as far as I'm concerned. lol There's a lot of them who can't sing a note and who get by on lipgloss, canard and confection. Which means there's a strong possibility it might be Janet Jackson. :)

Michelle Branch joined a country duo (The Wreckers) after her solo stuff, and did an album. Her voice sounds the same in the duo as it did in her solo stuff, and she has another solo album coming out next year, which is meant to be largely accoustic. Don't think it's her.

Made it clear that MV is not the person who many people were guessing at the time. He also asked people to be respectful because that person (who is not MV) also reads the blog. 2.) Another post from '06 where EL praised Britney for being a smart businesswoman and a good person with whom he had a good professional and friendly relationship.

Everyone in my old town knew Shania (Eileen) because she sang all over the place, including at one of the more popular resorts. She can definitely sing. As for Celine, she's actually been well-known in Canada as a francophone singer since the early eighties, and has proven time and time again that she has magic pipes.

Do NOT understand the Britney guesses. She fits the time frame and the marriage kids thing but so do a lot of people. Nobody has even thought she has a great voice. More water on the Shania fire. I worked at Deerhurst the same time she was in the stage show, and she can sing. I remember her brother talking about the record companies that were after her, so why a hoax? I think she doesn't make music anymore because she's a down to earth person who has more money than she'll ever need. She and Mutt divorced because he stepped out.

well, Michelle branch was just a guess because I'm almost convinced the producer is Guy Oseary, which would be VERY scandalous. He is very well known in the industry. ENty kept referring to the producer as 'the Guy' or 'easier for Guy to pull off'

Britney? Shake the music world? Not. I took my daughter to see her this spring and it was such a lip synced performance. Even my 12 year old could tell.
I really have no idea who it is. Shania was a guest judge (in place of Paula Abdoul) during the American Idol auditions in Chicago this summer. Some speculated she's considering a comeback. Probably isn't her.

No way is this Tori Amos. I've seen her live dozens of times, and every concert she does, even on the same tour, features different - and often impromptu - songs. She's definitely not lipsynching.

She had a hard time gaining acceptance down there and those country boys in Nashville would not hesitate to expose her as a fraud. I find it hard to believe she could keep it a secret this long.

ReplyDeleteAs others have pointed out, at the time of the original posting, and at the time of Ent finding out MV's secret in the first place, it would have been absolutely scandalous if it was Britney. I think outside of our CDaN world, it still would be - not now maybe, but to find out shenanigans were going on at her pinnacle? Would have broken a lot of little girl hearts to find out their idol was fake. Not to mention all the millions made from a lie. That's fraud.

I don't think it's Janet Jackson because I don't think she's generally known for having a great voice. She has a pleasant voice and she's a great dancer (and beautiful) but that's pretty much it. It's always been clear that her voice gets some help in the studio and that she prob wouldn't be famous if she weren't a Jackson.

Some additional thoughts:
MV could have later improved her singing to match the beginning standards set by S. S was singing because the songs, once written, need to be on the market.
Its was said that MV would change styles, so that the producer would not pay S anymore. He probably gave her some peanuts out of his own/label pockets, not having access to the singers funds.
from the guesses i like the J Jackson guess, because she would be the only one who would be worth the risk. Because of the money her name were expected to bring in. Otherwise you take a new pretty face that can sing, give her the songs and market her properly. That was done often enough. Just recently this has become a show that got talent...:-)
Assuming the 2000 date is really "fudgible", and this could have taken place in the 80s, here's an on the limb guess: Taylor Dayne and Clive Davis. She signed with Arista in the early mid 80s when Clive was there. She has several "gold" records but stopped recording in 1998 until 2008 when she came out with a new album (I haven't heard it). 'Kay, I'm gonna pitch one out there based on the assumption that Enty is fudging dates and time intervals to cover his butt.
ReplyDeleteSade. Torchy singer (and aren't the images associated with the blind are a clue?) who suddenly appeared on the charts and made it big. She even won an American Music Award and scored two Grammy nominations in...2002, if I recall correctly. She was even awarded an OBE by the Queen.
She can be a bit of a beeyotch, as a cop who arrested her on a traffic infraction in Jamaica learned. And she's quite beautiful, so I can see her putting down someone with better pipes but worse looks.
Yes, she broke on the scene years before then, but again, Enty could be fudging the dates. She did quite a bit of touring, television, the whole nine yards.
Sade has been married and has one child, which again fits the hints.
As for the distinctive mystery man that Enty was able to ID from "S's" description? Sade's producer Robin Millar is blind. Blindness is a fairly distinctive feature.
Heck, maybe "S" being used as the pseudonym of the real singer is another pointer to Sade.
Sade's productivity has been very erratic over the years. She's not toured much for quite a long while, either.
I think Christina Aguilera can be eliminated. It's well documented that she has had that voice on her since a child. There's video of her at age 6 singing the mess out of a Mariah Carey song. Besides, she's sung on the spot acapella plenty of times.

I like the Shania guess...everything fits well. Its never stated that MV isn't talented or can't sing (we've just made that assumption) so those from Canada attesting to her talent don't convince me it can't still be her. The only thing nagging me about this guess is the statement someone else made about how Nashville would LOVE to expose her so it would have been hard for them to keep this secret.

ReplyDeleteAlso I wonder if we should be looking at a artist that has been around for ages. Jlo, Britney etc have all been targets of lip synching for years so I can't see that being much of a scandel if it came out that they did. But someone like Diana Ross on the other hand never really had that much of a strong voice. When she was with the Supremes, the othe members pretty well made up for her lack of vocals. Then when she went solo her voice seemed to be so much stronger and don't forget she had Berry Gordy's support for many years(and also had his child)
I can appreciate our Canadian friends staunchly defending their fellow Canadians (they seemed to have all been ruled out) but the clips I have heard of early Shania seemed to suggest very little range to me. Yes, she could sing but did she sing well enough to go global in the way she did? My ex-daughter-in-law has a better voice than most commercial singers and she still sings in lounges.

It's not anyone who isn't thought to be a good singer since no one would be surprised to find out Jessica Simpson (or anyone of that ilk) can't sing well. It's not a little-known singer either (and frankly, I barely know who Jessica Simpson is). It's not someone whose "sweetening" has already been leaked since, again, it wouldn't shake-up the world and quite possibly Enty wouldn't have to dance as much as he's doing (although his legal participation would limit his ability to disclose any detail).
All the American singers are game as far as I'm concerned. lol There's a lot of them who can't sing a note and who get by on lipgloss, canard and confection. Which means there's a strong possibility it might be Janet Jackson. :)

ok i was totally on the shania train, but i am watching her bio on the biography channel right now and they just showed a clip of her singing "somewhere over the rainbow" in canada before she was discovered and it sounded pretty convincingly like her later stuff. idk i thought it was her for sure but now i'm not so confident... doubt it is britney just because that would not be shocking really.
