Your Turn

I know I did this last year, but I thought it had some great stories and I would love to see them again and there are so many more people reading this year that maybe they would like to see them and have their own stories to share.

I will leave it up to you which you would rather share, or you can share both. Your worst Valentine's Day gift and your best. Oh, and if you want to throw in your favorite romantic movie, then by all means include that as well. I myself am fond of The World Of Bacon. It brings a tear to my eyes everytime I watch it.

  1. Favourite romantic movie: Wall-E. Not kidding, That has got to be the most romantic film EVER.
Favourite Valentine's Day gift: the cards my kids make me every year. I've never gotten another gift for V-Day and even if I had, I think that cards from my demon spawn would still take #1.

  2. worst valentine's gift was a large pink dildo with studs on it. lasted longer than the boyfriend though.

    take that anyway you want.

    Happy Valentine's Day CDANers!!

As for bad valentines gifts....I can't really remember any. Just those valentines day's when I got nothing because I had no man at the time. LOL...

  7. Best and worst V-day presents are the same.

One year, my (now ex) husband brought home a single red rose for me and each of our daughters. It was sweet and touching until I found out he bought his girlfriend a huge bouquet.

  8. My worst Valentine's Day was when my wife (now ex) told me before Valentine's Day that we shouldn't exchange presents. I know, I'm an idiot, but I fell for it. So I didn't get her a present. Imagine my surprise when after a romantic dinner at an Italian restaurant appropriately named "Romeo's" she gave me a present. I was somewhat flabbergasted but then I remembered that I had stockpiled jewelry for her upcoming birthday. So when we got back home I quickly wrapped up some of that jewelry and gave it to her expecting great joy and love to arise. Wrong again. She was infuriated. She thought I had been just pretending that I hadn't gotten her a present so I could pull a trick on her and show her that I gotten her one after all. Apparently her first husband used to pull that little trick on her and she hated it, and him, and now me. So now I hate Valentine's Day, and the fact that I am single just makes me positively gloat. I am the Looserdude!

  9. I guess the worst gift I got was one dozen red roses....which arrived to my office DEAD. :) I just laughed and laughed.

Don't judge me....I like the cheese...
Fools Rush In, It Could Happen To You, Never Been Kissed, The Wedding Singer & most of the Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movies
I watch these on TV when they are on and cry everytime. I'm a sap!

  10. My best was my first dozen red roses. From my fiance at the time. They were beautiful and even though I thought they were a waste of money, I loved them!

  11. I don't care about Valentines Day really. My boyfriend brings me flowers presents randomly throughout the year, so it's no big deal.

And I do not like romantic/comedy movies AT ALL!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Love Actually or Breakfast at Tiffany's.

I cry at the end of both like a baby....

  13. movie: "North and South" with Richard Armitage

  14. Worst gift: a long sleeve t-shirt, with an embroided Tweety in the front. I haven't got time to buy his gift He broke up with me during our Valentine's Day (it's in 12/06), after that he asked when I could give his Valentine gift. Of course, I just returned the horrible t-shirt. He was pissed.

I didn't have the best gift yet, and I don't care much for that...

  15. Worst Valentine's Day: the year I received a cactus and McHammer pants in avocado green with black palm trees and dinner on a frozen tv collapsible table watching L.A. Law eating a Burger King chicken Sandwich.

Best Valentine's Day: 20 years later: same guy, extremely happy with the man that reminds me every day how blessed I am to have him (and my beautiful kids) in my life

  17. My favourite romantic movie of all times: Before Sunrise (and of course: Before Sunset).
If you haven't watched it yet: DO!

  18. My best gift: a small silver bracelet with a heart on it.

My worst gift: the same small silver bracelet, because I subsequently discovered that the boyfriend had a whole stockpile of them.

Favorite romantic movie: "Two for the Road."

  19. Best gift - my boyfriend was in law school and I was a student as well. We were both incredibly busy and broke. Somehow my BF sneaked home during the day and left me a cheap bouquet and a twelve pack of beer.

Not much in the long run but what I needed/wanted at the time.

  20. My favorite romantic movie is Broadcast News with William Hurt, Albert Brooks, Holly Hunter.

What do you think the Devil is going to look like if he's around? Nobody is going to be taken in if he has a long, red, pointy tail. No. I'm semi-serious here. He will look attractive and he will be nice and helpful and he will get a job where he influences a great God-fearing nation and he will never do an evil thing... he will just bit by little bit lower standards where they are important. Just coax along flash over substance... Just a tiny bit. And he will talk about all of us really being salesmen. And he'll get all the great women.

  21. Poop! My first post vanished.

Favorite romantic movie: The Wedding Singer. I always tear up when he starts singing that song on the plane.

Best/worst V-Day gift: I don't have an answer for either, because I've never really celebrated V-Day. My husband will go to the store for me and get midol, tampons, and chocolate whenever I need it though. I think a guy who does that throughout the year doesn't need to get me a V-Day gift. ♥

  22. Gifts?? What are Valentine's Day gifts?

    ReplyDelete
  23. I cringe when I think of the guy now...but someone did a five days of Valentines and brought gifts to my office everyday. Great gesture, horrible bf.

A favorite romantic comedy of mine is "Pillow Talk". I love Rock Hudson and Doris Day has the best wardrobe in that movie.

  24. My fiance gave me a dozen Red Roses and my cat ate the tops off every one. He was so upset.Cat had fun though.

  25. Funniest valentine. My Mother died in
Feb and I was expecting my brother to FedEx her ashes to me so I could scatter them on my Dad's grave. Ding dong. It's the FedEx guy and I said to him, oh, it's Mother. He just looked at me like I had lost my mind. I open the box and it's a big red tin. Ok...thought I was getting an urn, whatever. Opened the box and it had chocolate chip cookies in it. I was so stunned I thought they had baked Mother into cookies. (Ex sent them trying to get back in my good graces.)

  26. Favorite movie ever. Big Chill. When Glenn Close lends her husband to her best friend so she can get pregnant. So sweet. And William Hurt and Meg Tilly having a romance without sex. Love it. Happy V Day to all my CDAN family and especially to you Enty. Is it too early to drink?

  27. Happy V-Day! My husband and I don't really do presents for valentine's day...I've never really felt comfortable with getting flowers and things like that. I'm just not that kind of girl. I love going out to dinner though so that's what we're doing!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Worst Gift: 17 year old, getting dumped by my high school jerk boyfriend on the phone, while I was at work. He told me that his new "friend" was really his new girlfriend. And then 2 weeks later, finding out that I was pregnant.

Best Gift: My son, born when I was 18, not on Valentine's Day but still the best gift ever.

Now married to a wonderful husband who gives me a great gift every year. He buys a Valentine's Day card and writes some kind of loving sentiment to me. Sometimes silly, always heartfelt and appreciated by me. Total cost? $3.50 Total worth? Priceless

  29. I met my husband as a blind date on Valentines Day, he was a blind date. We have been together 24 years on Sunday. That being said, the first year after we were married was my WORST Valentines Day as the he told me he didn't CELEBRATE the day! When he realized his mistake I got a cheap bear. He has NEVER made that mistake again, and now considers it the most important date in our relationship, as it is the day we met.

Best Gift? He took me to a nice resturaunt and surprised me with a stay at a historic bed and breakfast. It was a big deal because the man can't plan his way out of a paper bag, let alone a romantic weekend.

  30. I love Valentine's Day. We send valentines instead of Christmas greetings. I love to decorate and make valentines!

That said, I don't have any memorable Valentine gifts (good or bad) that I can think of. My husband and I usually exchange cards. My birthday is right after so I usually get screwed a little.

Favorite romantic movies: Pride and Prejudice (Colin Firth), Pride and Prejudice (Matthew McFadden), The Ghost and Mrs. Muir.

Hot and bothered movie: CASINO ROYALE

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm not a big celebrator of V-day, we usually just exchange cards. And if my husband spent $70 on a bouquet that would cost $25 the next day, I would be furious.

Favorite romantic movie: Gone With the Wind is my classic favorite if you consider it a romance. I'm also a fan of basically any romantic comedy however contrived.

  32. Worst gift was not really a gift, but a tragedy. I don't wanna ruin anyone's romance, so skip this if you're queasy.

Lovely Vday dinner, complete with flowers, and violins. I was 18yo had just gotten married over Xmas impulsively like you do only when you're young. On the way home from dinner that night, a tractor-trailer eased into our lane, and sent us flipping (about 10 times) over an embankment and I sat there with 2 broken legs and a cracked skull as my new bride died in my arms. That was Valentine's Day 1991 for me.

Best gift...truly a gift, was 6 years later when my precious first daughter was born to my new wife and I exactly 2 days before Vday. It didn't erase the pain, but kinda made up for it. Sometimes life is extreme...which is why it's hard to get riled up about the silly shit.

Best romantic movie? Well, it has to be "FALL". And yes, I am biased. Since I actually wrote the poem that was used in the movie (titled "To All Slain Hope"). I even still have my framed check and letter from the writer/director thanking me for it. So go rent FALL and watch it. Not that I get royalties, lol, but I still like it. Maybe now that I'm divorced, I'll write another poem! For anyone out there in a relationship but thinking of breaking it off? Remember - the grass is not always greener. Just follow your heart and ask if the good times are better than the bad. If they are? Then stay and work it out. Life's too short and it can stop on a dime.

  33. Favorite Valentine's Day? Every February 14th during the years my late husband and I were together. The gifts he gave me were usually tacky and the cards, old-fashioned (he was 20 years older), but they were all heartfelt and he never forgot the day.

Favorite romantic movie? There are many, but one I always watch when its on is Starman-- loved it even before my husband passed away.

  34. Sunnyside; Hillarious! Were you kinda tempted to nibble a cookie, even before you knew mother wasn't twice baked?

Worst Vday: taken on a dinner date to a ridic expensive restaurant. Dick date figured I 'owed' him something and tried to rape me, threw me around etc.

Best Vday: my daughter, 3 at the time was asked by a sweet liitle boy at preschool to be his Valentine. She replied, very angrily, "NO! My mom's my valenTIME!"

    ReplyDelete
  35. @Himmmmm, that is the saddest story. I'm so sorry that happened to you. :(

@mygeorgie, that story re: your daughter - too cute!

    ReplyDelete
  36. @ mygeorgie, LOL. Twice baked. Never thought of it that way.

  37. Most romantic movie: Bram Strokers Dracula ( oh god gary oldman any day )
    Kill Bill 2 ( such a love story ! )

When Harry Met Sally - what can I say? I grew up watching this movie and the soundtrack is awesome. yes I was a 13 year old huge nerd

  38. This is best/worst all rolled into one: freshman year of college my roommate gave me a colossal glittery-pink vibrator in a 'haha, you're single but owning it' type of way. Long story short: Never used it, but as I was packing up my dorm I chucked it in the trash and my roommate pulled it out and put it in my suitcase. Got to my parents, found it, put it in the trashcan and didn't think about it until my Mom approached me a week later. Apparently the beloved family dog dug through my trash, pulled it out and brought it to my Mom to play fetch with. She said it took her ten minutes before she realized what it was. Took her another two days before she approached me.

Needless to say, once she gave it back to me, I took it straight outside to the dumpster.

@ Hmmmmmm, surely the worst ever. Sorry for your loss, but Happy Birthday to your daughter.

  39. Best gift and worst is kinda all in one. My first Valentine's with my (now) husband when we were first dating, he gave me chocolate dipped strawberries, flowers, a few gifts that were indicative of inside jokes and a GIANT card he made, with a heart cut out and a big picture of himself inside the heart. It was adorable and thoughtful and funny, I loved it all.

A few days after Valentine's Day I got a call from my brother saying my dad, who had cancer, was in the hospital and I should come home (from college). So my bf and I headed back to our dorms to pack some clothes and left an hour later. We drove through the night and made it there in 5 hours which was really fast. My Dad died 2 days later and it was the most horrible thing I've experienced--and I've had some pretty tragic experiences. And I know it's technically not a "gift" but it's the worst thing that's happened to me in association with the holiday.

Even though he didn't die on Valentine's Day, it was so close to it that I always think of him and that entire ordeal around this time. The only upside was the night before he died was the first time my now husband and I said "I love you". It's nice to have that as a silver lining.

My 2 favorite romantic movies are Pride and Prejudice (Keira Knightley) and Love Actually.

  40. I loathe Valentines Day. When I was a little kid I ended up with all the valentines that featured elephants and hippos...yeah, I was a chubby kid. Nice huh?

Never had a Valentine to celebrate it with at all. So I celebrate the state of Oregon's birthday. This year its 151. To hell with V-day!

  41. I'm a romantic guy or at least I used to be.

The most romantic thing I ever did turned out to be my worst Valentine's Day ever. I did this whole 'secret admirer' skit with this girl who I thought liked me as much as I liked her. I left her notes and candy and flowers anonymously, and since we were friends, she gush over all the things that was just so romantic. I thought I was in. Then came Valentine's Day, the day of the big reveal. She couldn't have been less enthused when she found out it was me all along. Nothing never happened with her and I ended spending a lot of time and effort (and money) for nothing.

My best Valentine's Day was exactly the opposite. I was talking to a casual friend of mine one day at college and she was telling me all of her horrible Valentine's Day stories. As a friend, I decided to surprise her with just a couple Valentine's Day staples like a box of candy, a teddy bear and some perfume. She lit up when I did that, and even though we just remained friends, it was the best Valentine's Day I ever had.

  42. Himmmmm, sad but a wonderfully sweet story -

My husband hides cards in my purse, my sock drawer and behind my favorite coffee mug. Usually we have dinner and then pop popcorn and watch romantic movies together. My favorite love story is a bit different, "The Killing Fields" a true deep and lasting friendship of two incredible men, the moment John Lennon's "Imagine" starts it makes me cry no matter how many times I have watched it. One year the husband was tired of renting Meg Ryan's French Kiss, When Harry met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, and You've got Mail so he bought them for me. One year he bought our daughter Pride and Prejudice, the A&E version, she would test various boyfriends by having them watch the entire box-set..only one managed to get through it and actually enjoy it..they are married and the parents of my two favorite Valentines - my delightful granddaughters.

    ReplyDelete
  43. My friends and I have a wonderful drinking game for the A&E version of Pride & Prejudice. No one has ever gotten past the fourth video.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Favorite romantic movie, 'Charade.' (The original, not the blasphemous remake!!!) Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn; what more could you ask for?

Redronnie, 'The Killing Fields' is a wonderful movie. Hadn't thought of it as a romance before. :)

I've only made it through P&P once - every other time I get stuck on the pond scene, watching it over, and over, and over...

  45. Can't believe only one other person mentioned this movie - Before Sunrise

    ReplyDelete
  46. Favorite romantic movie, Pride and Prejudice with Keira Knightly and Matthew McFayden.

Pillow Talk might be a close second. A friend and I try to watch it at least once a year and we drink a bottle of wine and drool over hot (closeted) Rock Hudson.

    ReplyDelete
  47. My husband bought me a Valentine's card once that was a bunny. It said, "You're so nice" on the front. It was for a little girl. I didn't disguise my disgust but we had a good laugh over it.

Like Water for Chocolate. Make sure you're not hungry before you watch. I still want chilis like what they make in that movie.

  48. Shakey: "Like Water for Chocolate">totaly agree. One of the sexiest, lushest movies around. Thanks for the reminder :)
