Carla Bruni & Nicolas Sarkozy Both Cheating

I am trying to imagine what the people in the US or Canada or most countries would say or how they would react to the news that the leader of their country and spouse were both cheating on each other and not really trying to hide it. According to several French tabloids, Carla Bruni is not only cheating on her husband she is actually living with her new lover. He is Benjamin Biolay which is not a hand cream but is actually a singer. Supposedly the two fell in love when they decided to turn friendship into romance. Meanwhile, the President of France is enjoying some time with Chantal Jouanno who is in charge of the environment and also loves karate. Maybe the President likes it rough. The story is everywhere and there have been no attempts to stop it from spreading. No denials other than the usual perfunctory ones.

The great thing about the French media is that no one has even bothered to ask the President. They don't care. It isn't important to them what he does in his private life and they figure if he wants to talk about it he will. Above is a French link. If you would prefer an English based link, click here.

Stephen Harper is as boring as oatmeal, so I would think he'd be more interesting if he had an affair.

Everyone knows Sarkozy is a man-whore and whatever goes on in his private life is just that..PRIVATE, as long as he his suitable to be a good leader and keeping his country as his top priority it's fine by me. So guess, it isn't cheating when the two parties are Ok with it.

Im pretty sure they are both perfectly happy with this arrangement.

Not surprising at all. I lived in France for a while and my host parents both had lovers while the husband worked in the city during the week (he came home on weekends).

And as I recall, Francois Miterrand's mistress attended his funeral along with his wife.

It's not the way most of us would like things to be here in North America, but the French are also generally happier than we are according to most studies.

Isn't Sarkozy rumored to have fathered the justice minister's (or some other important position) baby. She wouldn't say who the father is.

if it was here in the u.s. they would have tried to impeach him or forced him to resign and they would have brutally destroyed the reputation of bruni in the media......

@Vanessa

That was my second thought.

The French are simply more honest about human nature than Americans are.

Every time I'm at a wedding and they go through the part about being faithful to one another, I want to snort loudly and say "yeah, right." Only the fear of not getting to go to the reception and eat cake stops me from doing so.

viva la france! hey, whatever works for them is ok by me. she's always been a free spirit. he's a notorious skirt chaser. sounds like a match made in heaven for both of them.

this country is so phony and hypocritical when it comes to sex. we're quick to judge marriages when we don't even fucking know the people involved. live and let live---that's my motto.

I'm on the "if they're both okay with it, who cares" bandwagon. I wish we were as comfortable about sexuality and human nature here in the U.S.

SPORKY...EXACTLY...AS LONG AS THEY BOTH AGREE....

Really? Do we want to live an a society that considers"marriage" two people who no longer live together but actually live with their lovers?

Why are they still married if one or both of them live with someone else?

This is similar to Monique and Sydney's relationship if she chooses to sleep with someone else.

I meant "in" a society

Bravo! Americans make too much fuss over such matters. As long as the parties are over the age of consent, I really don't care who politicians are screwing. In fact, I think some presidents wouldn't have screwed us taxpayers over if they'd gotten screwed more!!!!

This is too funny -- people say its ok to cheat and even to flaunt it -- but dayum, let Tiger have a few affairs and he is persona non grata. Talk about a double standard.

figgy said...

@not on my dollar, it would be lovely to imagine marriage to be sacred and free of cheating.

...but it's not. Not for a lot Lot LOT of marriages. Half, by some estimates.

So why continue to delude ourselves?

sunnyside1213 said...

@ Cindy, if Tiger and Elin had an agreement, I wouldn't care what they did. It's the violation of trust that gets people riled up. Just MHO.

@not_on_my_dollar - To be fair, throughout history, the basis of most marriages - particularly amongst royalty and those with power - have been business contracts rather than based on love and compatibility.
If Carla and Nicolas work well as a power couple for the French head of state, then I'd guess that's what's going on.

I think there is a big difference between "cheating" and "having an open relationship". I personally don't believe in either, but I'm not about to go and tell other couples how they should run their relationship. If they are both honest and open about and they're both OK with the other person sleeping with someone else, who am I to argue?

It would not work for me though. I don't want to share.

They are French. They are not lying about it. Nobody cares.

I know a lot of people who have tried the open relationship. It seems to work for a while and then someone gets jealous or someone decides that they want to move on with one of their lovers and leave their partner behind or someone gets pregnant or gets a STD. If these two people want to have an open relationship then whatever, go for it, but I just don't think it is for me.

J'adore le Français.

@Alice, gay men seem to have more success with open relationships than do heterosexual couples. From the ones I've know.

Why is this a surprise? They were cheating on their partners when they met! Just natural for them. Yeah, I heard Sarkozy has an illegitimate kid too. If this happened in the States, they asses would be grass and they would get kicked out.

J'adore les Francais aussi!

i'm french and i need going on a foreign gossip site to learn french love affairs on our president and his wife!!

in other side,i don't care it's their private life and they're OK on their open affair

I agree with Jess and pomme. And Rocketqueen, you've been in a pretty unusual French family, unless they were higher class.

Even if one of them is not OK with it, so what ? It's their private life, they can divorce like everybody else, if they don't it's their choice.

Of course it would be wildly different if Sarkozy had campained on "morality" or "family values", like your politicians do, but thankfully it's not a political topic here in France.

As for the affair ? Well, he married Carla Bruni (a celebrity a la Paris Hilton, a slutty marriage wrecking heiress, ex-model and so-called singer), to prove that he was still man enough to get a taller ex-model, although having been humiliated by his previous wife who publicly cheated on him. But he's not man enough to keep the celebrity - though he's arguably the most powerful man in France, and she digs power. Ha-ha.

Chirac was known as a philandering man (and his wife as a saint or a moron). Sarkozy, he's the midget that gets cheated on. So he's cheating too, to save face, it's obvious.
