A Squirrel Defends His Dead Friend
I thought about posting the banned M.I.A video, but this one is so much better. Sure, 9 minutes of out of control violence accompanied by a pretty good song can be something to enjoy, but it won't tug at your heart like this one minute video of a squirrel defending his dead squirrel friend from two crows.
I have seen this before, but mothers defending their dead cubs.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing and beautiful.
I love squirrels.
Awwww =(
ReplyDeleteI hate to be a downer but are you sure the squirrel is just defending his dinner? I love squirrels but I am just not convinced his motives were altruistic.
ReplyDeleteI saw one like this recently with two dogs - one was trying to protect his buddy's body from cars on the highway. So heartbreaking.
ReplyDeletei thought about the same thing, Alice, but the only 'meat' squirrels eat are bugs...i googled it because i have no life
ReplyDeleteI was saying "Awww" but then I read Alice D millionaire's comment. (lol)
ReplyDeleteI am a vegatarian and when ppl say stuff like 'they're just animals' or something else that suggests they arent creatures with actual feelings and emotions this is the kinda stuff that I point to to say that just isnt so.
ReplyDeleteWhat an amzing video btw~ thanks for sharing this enty :)
ReplyDeleteI've seen ducks do it. We have a duck pond nearby. When a duck gets hit by a car the mate will stay by the body and guard it. You have to drag the body off the road or the mate will die too. Very sad. I've seen geese do the same thing.
ReplyDeleteI love squirrels! Have a ton of them in our yard & they are the silliest creatures in the spring. Humping pine cones, somersaults & general cirque de soliel shenanigans. There are a few that stare me down thru my window waiting for their treats. I could watch the cheaky buggers for hours :)
ReplyDeleteBest friends <3
ReplyDeletesquirrels bury their dead like us. we used to live on a farm in manitoba and if one was dead,it would be dragged off by the rest out of harms reach. a lot of animals do this.
ReplyDeleteI love squirrels! I have a couple that stay around my yard, and I put out sunflower seeds for them every morning. I have one of them trained to take peanuts out of my hand. Last weekend I saw one of the squirrels building a nest up high in one of the trees, so I guess I'm about to be a squirrel grandmother!
ReplyDeleteI gotta say that even though they dig up my garden and "plant" all kinds of surprises for me I still love them. I even bought a seed feeder for them this year...although I told my husband it was for the blue jays.
ReplyDeleteAw. Those squirrels are not merry!
ReplyDeletelove transcends death, even in the animal kingdom. WOW.
ReplyDeleteI am SO SORRY I clicked on that link. WTF did I just watch? And could someone please, PLEASE tell me how people concoct such "stories" for their videos? Whoever is behind that is one sick sunavabeech!
ReplyDeleteWhen I see things like this, I can't believe people can call them "dumb animals." No matter what the creature, they demonstrate a range of emotion, a depth of feeling and a level of awareness to rival or surpass our own.
ReplyDeleteThat was sad, yet heartwarming. I get so mad at people who talk about "dumb animals have no feelings." When our cat recently died our other cat would constantly go into the closet where she passed away and look for her and then he would go to her other favorite spots in the house looking for her. He didn't eat for days because they used to eat together. The dogs kept looking for her too. It was so sad.
ReplyDeleteWow. Reading all of the comments made it even sadder. I thought the video was cute and sad at the same time. We have literally hundreds of squirrels in my yard, and I want to feed them, but I also don't want them to get used to coming on the porch, for the fear that my kitty (Icecat, get it?) will eat them..
ReplyDelete@Iheartjacksparrow, congrats on the Squirrel-Gramma thing! Post pics ;)
ReplyDeleteDoes that make you a 'Squirrely Gramma'?
It was sweet of the squirrel to protect his dead friend. Only I don't completely understand squirrels...I saw one once drag a bird carcass off of my doorstep which creeped me out. I thought they only ate nuts and were maybe herbivores.
ReplyDelete"I thought about posting the banned M.I.A video, but this one is so much better. Sure, 9 minutes of out of control violence accompanied by a pretty good song can be something to enjoy.."
ReplyDeleteThe F*ck Enty! I just went back & watched that clip you linked. There is nothing enjoyable about that vid & I am rather pissed off you chose to add that to the otherwise decent site. Who the HELL is blogging this shit? It sure isn't the Ent from a year ago. No way would he/she put that up. That shit is not art, it's disturbing.
:( :(
how sad.
ReplyDeleterabbits can go into depression at the loss of their bonded "other". i lost one to such a depression in november after her bff died in october just days before we had to leave town. we tried for a couple of weeks, but she finally succumbed.
and those damn crows (ravens, whateverthefuck) are MEAN. they eat the other baby birds out of the nests, along with any garbage they can find. they will challenge a human or a hawk (hawks at least play fair), so that is one brave squirrel.
Wow - thanks for posting. We humans totally underestimate the intelligence and compassion of animals.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand that MIA thing.
ReplyDelete@mygeorgie - weren't you going to leave this site a couple of weeks ago because you were "fed up"? If you're so unhappy, why don't you just stay away??
ReplyDelete@ RocketQueen,
ReplyDeleteI believe I stated my frustration about a post a while back, but I have never been the type to cry the "That's it, I'm leaving this site!" bs, so you may be thinking of someone else. And even if someone did say that, what are you, the participation police?
Thanks for your concern. You're always so gracious & hospitable on here.
