Joaquin Phoenix On Letterman vs Katy Perry On Sesame Street

Joaquin Phoenix was on Letterman last night. He took the time to apologize to Dave and said he thought Dave would be able to tell a real interview from a fake. Dave did not seem to be offended. Dave did shoot down the rumors that he was somehow involved in last year's fakery.

Katy Perry was on Sesame Street and the video stayed up on Sesame Street just long enough for people to complain that Katy was showing way too much cleavage and that it was inappropriate. I am not sure a four year old really cares about cleavage or even notices. I think it was probably the parents who were offended and complained. I'm guessing Lady GaGa will not be getting an invitation anytime soon.

Please.......are these the same people who breast feed in public places...?

I just thought Katy's outfit was disrespectful. Who in the hell shows up for Sesame Street in *that*? What an idiot.

And, Misch, my three girls watched Sesame Street (and this fourth one will too) and I didn't breastfeed at all. So I'm not sure what you're getting at?

Everyone keeps saying Katy Perry is a nice person, etc, etc, but I am SOOOOO sick of her too skimpy outfits and I think her music is horrible because it all sounds the same. Plus, that California Gurls video with her boobs squirting whipped cream was too much and even kind of scary. I don't think preschoolers will be harmed by her skimpy clothes, but why would you try to dress so sexy for Sesame Street? Then again, why did they invite someone like that to be on the show in the first place?

Bad idea. Someone at the show should have nixed the outfit.I don't like Katy Perry but Sesame Street knew what they were getting. I just read a book about the complete history of Sesame Street and there are some people over there right now who have no idea what direction the show should take.

Comparing public breast feeding to wearing revealing clothing = apples and oranges. Sesame Street is and always has been a program geared toward small children, and dressing "sexy" for the show is completely ignorant and trashy. It's one thing to turn on MTV and be bombarded by Katy Perry's boobs- there is a time and place for everything, and childrens programming on PBS is neither.

She could have chosen a better outfit. She doesn't always have to show off the girls. Seriously.

Like KP and love Sesame Street; did not watch it on TV or here; but when I saw the photo of the outfit yesterday I thought it was too much cleavage to be showing on a show designed primarily for small children.

Seemed as if she can't deviate from her image of being half-nice but definitely half-naughty...a semi-fake innocence while constantly showing her goods so we will remember her.

I haaaaaaaate Katy Perry but that dress? It's bright colors and the flower on her head with the veil that looks like a tutu is TOTALLY something little girls watching would respond positively to. (No, the boobs aren't appropriate but I'm not sure a 4 year old would even notice.)

(oh wait, unless you're a Brangelina kid, then you wouldn't be drawn to those bright colors like every other child on the planet)

I don't think we can blame the dress on KP. I think she was told to wear it. Just doesn't seem likely to me that she came to the set with her proposed dress in hand. Seems more like production people, involved with the show, planned what she would wear. Am I wrong? What's the professional word on this??

Get back to work Joaquin. Two years is too long to waste.

Little kids will LOVE those bright colors and I don't think the boobs will harm them at all.

That said, why was this outfit necessary? Just a couple inches more fabric and it would be completely innocent. Young kids see so many sexualized images already and Sesame Street shouldn't contribute. I thought the shots of her running (jiggling everywhere) were especially problematic.

This pseudo-documentary by Joaquin Phillips and everything Sasha Baron Cohen does just proves what a genius Andy Kaufman was. Andy Kaufman did it first and he did it better and he fooled everybody.

"I've always liked you."

I don't believe Letterman for one minute. I don't think he likes anyone. And I don't care about the Phoenix scam or Dave's feeling.

I like Katy Perry and if the Sesame Street producers were stupid enough to record an ep with her showing cleavage it's on them.

When I saw the Katy/Sesame Street video I actually thought "that dress makes her boobs look smaller than they usually appear."

But I did think about them. I don't think a toddler would care, just the moms who either a) are a bit prudish or b) wished they had her figure.

BTW, she specifically sings she's wearing her 'play dress-up' clothes, so the dress was specifically chosen by someone...

i was more offended by the ridiculous faces she was making. she always looks like she is about to gag

Though the dress Katy wears is a little revealing, I think the complaints say more about the parents complaining than they do about Sesame Street and Katy. It seems pretty innocent to me.

I don't think I get MISCH's point.

Honey, you can put them away for two seconds. No one will be forgetting them anytime soon since you flaunt them around all the time.

this country is so fucking hypocritical. little kids aren't looking at her tits. it's their moms who wish they HAD tits like that and cover it up by claiming they're defending the children.
gimme a fucking break, people.

I think they pulled it because her acting was horrendous.

But seriously when I saw the still photo I thought, no big deal. But it was when she was in motion, especially running, I changed my mind. Those things were flopping all over the place. Totally innapropriate for a kids show.

I do agree that the kids don't notice it and probably wouldn't care, but at the same time I would not expect to see something like that when my kids watch it.

Also, just because the kids don't necessarily notice it doesn't mean it is right.

chopchop said...

The problem is this: you say the kids don't notice it and I say you're probably right. However when children grow up being bombarded with images of adults wearing revealing clothing, what do you think they're going to want to wear when they get older? They are going to find slut-wear the norm ... on what planet is that acceptable? Many people find even Miley Cyrus/Hannah Montana's clothing objectionable but those Disney Channel shows are geared toward tweens, not infants & toddlers FFS.

I didn't even notice her boobage until someone mentioned it. Not offensive at all, and I doubt the kids noticed it, unless mommy or daddy made a big stink about it. It is a rather cute video. Sad that we have such a Junior High School, Beavis and Butthead mentality about sex in this country.

I watched the Sesame Street clip without sound and I couldn't object to the cleavage or the boobs. Katy Perry's dress actually looks a lot like those one piece swimsuits women used to wear in the fifties and sixties, and I agree that her boobs actually look smaller in that dress. But you can see her dress is way too short when Elmo runs around her legs. And the dress is very nipply, not quite Madonna conical-bra, but the design of the booby bit of her dress is quite pointy. Even though she isn't intentially acting sexy in this clip, I think that the shortness of her dress and the pointiness of her boobs is probably not suitable for watching by young children. I suspect though, her outfit wouldn't raise an eyebrow in some European countries.

I had one friend on FB who was totally outraged by the Sesame Street episode. I'm a mom of 3 younger kids and it did not offend me at all. I think it was cute. And they are just boobs people. My kids see more stuff at the beach than what she showed.

I really can't believe people were outraged, I thought it was kind of funny and I am not a KP fan.
