Stephen Colbert Testifies Before Congress

Unlike when most celebrities testify in front of Congress, Stephen Colbert actually made sense and he was very, very funny. He had said earlier that he was going to take this very seriously. He did, but he did it in his the role of his character on his show so it came across great. It also differed a lot from the testimony he had submitted prior to appearing in person.

At the beginning, one member of the committee asked Stephen to not speak and just to submit in writing what he wanted to say. Lucky for us, he got to speak. If more celebrities testified like this someone might actually watch CSPAN.

Why was he testifying? Heard he was there, but not the reason.

It was about the exploitation of farm laborers. And of course, how that issue ties to immigration.

My favorite part was when he said the farms should raise the dirt level so they don't have to bend over to do the picking. :)

Yes, this is what it takes to get ANY government official, in any capacity, to pay attention and get any job done. I, for one, am unable to do this any longer. It's someone else's turn.

Brilliant. Simply brilliant.

This just reaffirms my love for Colbert. Good job.

While it was funny as hell - he made some great points. I'm wish Mooshki - one of the best parts was about raising the ground level so you don't have to bend over.

Love it. I can't wait to see him and Stewart in DC in a month.

And the rightwingers are furious, furious! They are filled with rage that the sanctity of Congress has been sullied! Since when was Congress sacred?

I spent 2 solid weeks watching C-SPAN for hours and hours on end. I learned A LOT. Unfortunately, it was all things I never wanted to know. Ignorance was bliss.

Out of curiosity, is anyone else going to the Stephan Colbert and Jon Stewart Rally for Sanity in DC on Oct. 30th?

I'll be there.

Really? I heard parts of his testimony played on NPR, and all I could think was wow, this guy is really not funny at all. I'm not convinced his stunt helped his cause at all--he was way too smarmy. Never watched his show, and now I have no reason to....'cause if that's what he does--I'm not missing a thing.

I'll be at the rally in D.C. with my boyfriend.

To be honest, it was kind of painful to watch. As in I was embarrassed for him. It's kind of inappropriate to act a fool in front of a House Judicial Subcommittee, especially when you're trying to push your agenda on them. Bad move for the cause.

Sorry guys.

I am with K and Sue Ellen. I like Colbert, but this was dumb. The room was quiet and the subcommittee did not even chuckle. It was like watching a stand-up comedian bomb on open mike night.
