Harry Potter

Sorry for the late start this morning, but I am getting way too old for a midnight showing of a movie. It did start on time, but it was close to 4am by the time I got home and another hour to cook up some bacon sandwiches so did not get to sleep until about 5 or so.

As for the movie. I went and saw it at Arclight and I believe they had 13 screens all starting after midnight in two or three minute intervals. Everyone of the showings was sold out. I would say about 40% of the people there had some kind of Harry Potter stuff on. It ranged from a scarf to a tie, to full on robes and school outfits.

I have come to a theory about why the first movies were so similar to the books and that is because the first books were significantly shorter than the latter books. Prior to going out last night, I watched Half Blood Prince again. I admit it was not exactly on point with the book, but it is tough to cram everything into two and half hours when you are working from like a 600 page book.

Because Deathly Hallows is being broken into two parts which will run about 5 hours total, the movie is much more true to the book. Is it exact? No. But, one thing I really enjoyed was they hit every main action point. In the book, long, long stretches are spent doing nothing except moving from night to night and then staying at Sirius' house for ages. The movie shortens those things up.

Every action sequence was intense and I don't think anyone was ever bored. It looks like it was filmed with the possibility of making it 3D because there is a lot of stuff that comes right at you. Everyone who left the theatre was already counting down to July.

Definitely worth going to see.

  8. The reviewer of the Tulsa paper hated it, but then his reviews always suck.

  9. The Austin paper gave it a "C" which is OK because they hate action movies. In fact they generally only like movies about sensitive young boys coming of age, if you know what I mean.

Don't you read movie web sites? It was intended to be 3D but Warners didn't have time to finish the 3D and still make the release date. The second half will be 3D, and they will probably finish the 3D on the first half so they can release it back to theaters next year.

  14. I'm glad to see an opinion from someone who does read the books. I usually spend a lot of time during the movie fuming because they change so much. The books will always be the best, but the movies are very beautifully done.

  15. @ Jennifer, I'm the same way.

I'm glad that it seems like Pt. 1 & 2 will follow the books.

  16. It was awesome! I went to a midnigt showing with some fellow teachers, and we had a blast watching the audience, and then enjoying the film together.

I have to say it wasn't just the movie that I enjoyed so much, though I did, but the audience was so much better than the norm. No cell phones went off, no texting was seen, no crying babies, just a bunch of fans enjoying the event together.
