Johnny Depp As The Wizard Of Oz

Robert Downey Jr. has been dropping out of things right and left lately, and the latest victim is a prequel to The Wizard Of Oz. Apparently Disney's next choice is Johnny Depp. Can I see Johnny Depp as the Wizard? Yep, but I wonder if it will be like another version of Willie Wonka. It would probably have that same kind of feel. Oh, and also Alice In Wonderland. I was kind of looking forward to Robert Downey Jr playing the role because I think and this is just my opinion, that the Wizard is really not that nice of a guy and Robert Downey Jr would have that kind of attitude that maybe Johnny does not have. When Johnny plays these characters they all end up kind of looking the same. It is not that Depp is not a great actor because he is fabulous and has lots of range, it just seems like he has been doing a lot of this type of role lately. What he needs to do is try and find some small indie project and just do something totally different from what he has in the past five years.

  1. I think this would be a great roll for Christian Bale....can't you just see him screaming at the munchkins to get him a latte? In all seriousness, does this mean that they will cast Helena as one of the witches?

  2. thank god tim burton isn't directing it.

I really don't need my beloved OZ to be twisted into one of his S&M fantasies.

  5. Nah. Johnny needs to sit this one out and let someone else do it.

    I nominate David Tennant.

  6. agreed. and could we also nix tim burton, helena and danny elfman as potentials too?

they're all great, but they seem to be getting repetitive. it happens. i still love them though.

  7. Is this a direct adaptation of the books or the movie version of Wicked? Love Wicked!!!! Saw it again the other day.

  8. Gah...I really hope this isn't more hinting in the direction that RDJ is off the wagon :(

Agree though - I can totally see Depp doing the same kind of zany character he always does. Love me some Depp - but seeing him in the Tourist promos wonders if he can play a straight-up character anymore.

  9. @nunaurbiz it is a prequel and Wicked is being turned into a mini-series.

I'm not sure however if they are basing Oz The Great & Poweful on the books or if it is a new screenplay.

  12. Now, I love Johnny as much as the next girl...I have this fantasy where I can afford to buy an island right next to his in the Bahamas, and he would dress in his pirate outfit, we could all get together for drinks on the beach...ah, those would be good times indeed.

But, I have to admit, Johnny is kind of turning into Jim Carey, always playing the same character. Maybe that's what motivated him try 'The Tourist'. It is different from his usual roles, even if he comes across as a little bloated in it.

  13. Jude Law? But I doubt he could carry a movie.

My brain is not coming up with actors who can play dark and troubled characters. Besides Daniel Craig.

I'd hate to see someone young in this role. He needs to have experience.

  14. John Hamm he has the looks & can do authority really well.

I'm a bit tired of seeing Johnny also. I know he has a family and an estate to support in France.

But after the Tourist bomb he needs to take some time off.

  15. Damn it, I hope RDJ doesn't go downhill. I'm sure sobriety is a constant struggle for him. I hope the reason he's cutting back on work is to lessen his stress so he has less reason to relapse.

  18. Ahhh, I hope he has not fallen, especially after working so hard to stay clean and out of trouble.

@MommaBear...love your Johnny idea, now that would be fun!

  23. What about Alan Rickman? He'd give the role intensity and a touch of menace. He can do a pretty good American accent if needed.

Who am I kidding, I just want to see more Alan!

  24. I think Eddie Izzard would be a PERFECT wizard. He does a great American accent. RDJ would have been great, too. I also hate to think that he's sliding down the wrong path. Maybe he just doesn't want to overbook himself. Overwork leads to relapses, too.

  25. Remember, Enty had a blind that RDJ was slipping way back when he was doing publicity for the first Iron Man. I don't think he's sober, but there's a big difference between struggling with your sobriety and losing it all together. I'm just happy if he can keep his life from falling apart.

  26. oooooooooh, alan rickman or eddie izzard. yes, please.

  27. I so want him to hold it together.

  28. Agree that Rickman or Izzard would be amazing. I still laugh when I think of Rickman in Galaxy Quest. I love it when actors don't take themselves too seriously, and he was so perfect in that role!

  29. I totally agree with you, Enty!

  30. I love the Eddie Izzard suggestion. I also agree with Mooshki about RDJ maybe dialing it back a little. I'll support whatever keeps him well.

  31. I nominate John Malkovich or Gary Oldman. I know they're probably going for someone slightly younger but I miss both of them and either of them could be wonderful in it.
