Today's Blind Items - Kindness
So, this future Hall Of Famer has a celebrity girlfriend, but he still shows he has heart and compassion. A while back, there was a young boy who had cancer. Prognosis was not hopeless, but not great. Being that he was just shy of being a teenager the Make A Wish Foundation granted him his wish to meet the New York Yankees. He did. It was at Yankee stadium, before a game. The Make A Wish people were amazing. He was brought onto the field while the players were warming up for the game. He was told that the players knew why he was there and they would each come over, one by one, talk for a minute or two and pose for a picture. And they did. Our player though did a lot more then that. He stayed and talked for much more then a few minutes. And it wasn't the obligatory "hang in there kid" talk. It was real talk. Joking around, talking about music, movies, baseball etc.. cheerful things.. very authentic. The boy, who has recovered now still has the picture and nothing but love for our player.
Derek Jeter.
ReplyDeleteA. Rod?
ReplyDeleteDerek Jeter
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely Jeter.
ReplyDeleteGod, I love me some DJ even more now.
ReplyDeleteMakes me cry. Happiness and hope are so incredibly important. Very nice man whoever it is.
ReplyDeleteA rod would never pull his head out of his a$$ long enough to be that nice to someone else.
ReplyDeleteI'll go on the Jeter bandwagon.
I am surprised DJ posed for a pic
ReplyDeletea-rod, his mess of a personal life aside, has a very gracious side, ...have seen this at several events....not to mention he's been in the pics lately, no? a-rod ftw.
ReplyDeleteI HATE the Yankees but Derek Jeter is a class act all the way...he is EXACTLY what you would want as your team captain! I would love to see him play for my beloved Tribe but that will never happen so I will just keep on worshipping him from afar. Classy guy!
ReplyDeleteThe Yankees organization is fantastic at making these kinds of things happen. They have a week in the summer, Hope Week, where they fulfill all kinds of wishes. Here's a story about just one, so sweet:

And if you have a chance to see them on the Yes network, you will be bawling.
And yes, definitely Jeter!
I love me some Jeter. This must be about him - one of the good guys.
ReplyDeleteMy children once told me I loved the Red Sox more than them, but I love Derek Jeter.
ReplyDeleteHas to be Jeter, his sister was sick a while back he knows exactly what this kid was going through...and yes he has a very big heart.
ReplyDeleteHas to be Derek Jeter.
ReplyDeleteThe man is a Class Act. Derek Jeter.
ReplyDeleteI am a BoSox fan, but think Jeter is the man...totally Jeter!
ReplyDeleteI'm on Team Jeter.
ReplyDeleteHey, Enty...Ray Charles called and said he could see the answer for this one a mile away.
ReplyDeleteI don't like baseball players or Make-A-Wish, so I'm going to just abstain from saying anything, lest the angry bleeding hearts come out and call WHINE ONE-ONE.
I'd like to think Jeter, but I don't know if he's a lock for the Hall. On the other hand, Enty might not know baseball very well. So I'll be on board the DJ train, but with reservations.
ReplyDeleteMight be Mo, he's definitely Hall bound.
It would be nice if it was A-Rod if only to show he isn't a douche 100% of the time.
ReplyDeleteNightmare Child you made me laugh at whine one one.
I agree it sounds like Jeter. As a Yankee hater, I begrudgingly admit he is one of the few class acts on the team.
ReplyDeleteAny person (without a link to steroids) that is going to blow by 3000 hits is more than a lock for the hall of fame
ReplyDeletegosh this made me cry a little.
ReplyDeleteCould be Jeter, could be A-Roid or could be Swish...
ReplyDeleteI think it's Jeter, sorry, Jeeta! (As NY fans would say.)
Put me on the Jeter train. Enty used "A-list girlfriend" to describe Cameron Diaz last week. So the fact that he just referred to a celebrity girlfriend this week? Totally Minka Kelly, and the player is Jeter.
ReplyDeleteIn no way is Jeter not HOF bound. I hate the Yankees, but have to acknowledge Jeter's greatness nonetheless.
A-Rod is a douche of the highest order. NYC corrupted that boy.
Just for fun, didn't Chuck Finley play for the Yankees for a season? Heh heh.
derek jeter. my bff works for his charity foundation!
ReplyDeletei think this could be either or both Derek and Alex who regularly do this kind of thing. I'd throw in Swisher too if it hadn't mentioned the hall of fame.
ReplyDeleteIf Enty had said A-list gf we would have know it was Alex instantly, although given how unblind his recent blinds have been maybe he wouldn't have bothered.
I miss the old Enty, I'm beginning to think the original one was lured away by a trail of bacon and replaced with a pod person
my duh, I didn't read the first line of the blind, so not Mo.
ReplyDeleteAs for DJ and the Hall, I love him, but he probably doesn't have the stats to get in. He's really only a good short, not amazing. And being a team player, he didn't rack up the glory stats like ARod did. Ick ARod.
All that said, yes, DJ's a great guy and totally worthy of this blind.
DJ is totally going to the hall of fame barring some out of left field steroid stuff.
ReplyDeleteHe is 74 hits away from 3000, has 5 WS rings, a handful of gold gloves and is an over .300 lifetime hitter. He also has great post season stats.
If they don'y let him in I'll protest lol
Jeter or A-Rod...though Minka isn't as much of a celebrity as Cameron. I'll unfortunately have to go with A-Rod, even though this sounds more like something Jeter would do.
ReplyDeleteAwhile back when A-Rod was still with the Mariners a little girl from my neighborhood had terminal cancer. She got to meet the Mariners through Make-A-Wish, including A-Rod. Not only did he spend time with her that day, but he continued to visit her in the hospital and provide tickets to games whenever she was healthy enough to attend. After she died he attended and spoke at her funeral. He may have done some crappy things since then, but he definitely has a good side as well, so I am going with him for this one.
ReplyDeleteA Roid is a selfishly cheap weasel if recent blinds are to believed. I vote Jeter as well.
ReplyDeleteI am on the same boat as the gals above who are part of Red Sox Nation but have nothing but respect for Derek Jeter. He is a class act all the way.
ReplyDeleteI;m not part of Red Sox nation, but I agree about Jeter. He's the only Yankee I can stand.
ReplyDeleteI'm part of Red Sox Nation...Go Sox!!!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with Carrie. Alex isn't a complete doucher. My ex-husband played little league with him for years in Miami and all the way until my ex's parents died a couple of years ago, Alex kept in pretty close contact with them. My ex's father actually taught Alex a few things :) He was a former minor leaguer in the White Sox org and for these poor boys in Miami that was the closest they were getting to a real ball-player :)
ReplyDeleteIt's been revealed. It's Jeter. Below is the link.

Even if this has already been revealed I wanted to throw in my vote for Jeter. I was a student at Virginia Tech in 2007 and one of the more salient donations to the school's memorial/victim fund was from George Steinbrenner and the Yankees - to the tune of 1 million. He also made a promise - that the New York Yankees would come to Blacksburg and play a game with the team. I don't think anyone took that seriously but it was a kind offer.
ReplyDeleteHowever in March 2008, the New York Yankees did in fact come to Blacksburg. I remember Jeter in particular because when he came upon the memorial stone for Michael Pohle (and a replica jersey of his beside it, Michael was a huge fan), he spoke to his fiance Marcy Crevonis and told her he'd let her take his picture - but only if she'd smile. He (along with A-Rod and the more famous Yankees) devoted a great deal of time to signing autographs and talking to the victims, their families, and any students they encountered. I cannot express how much it meant to our community to have them come and show us what the human spirit really is. It's not a malevolent man who injures and kills your friends, mentors, and family. It's the thousands of people who will support you in your time of need. I keep my Hokie colored Yankees hat on my book shelf to remind me of the truly altruistic nature of our fellow man.
Say what you will about their personal lives, it's obviously they attempt to to love and help their fans despite their flaws and fallacies.
