Listening To Vanilla Radio

Yesterday afternoon I was headed out for a meeting when I turned on the radio. Now, because I have no creativity and no imagination I generally listen to the same 30 songs repeatedly. This happens because my mom does not like her presets messed with in the van so I have a choice between several oldies stations, talk radio or KIIS which hosts Ryan Seacrest's show and mainly plays Katy Perry, Lady GaGa and Adele every five minutes. My mom is a big fan of Ryan, despite his hair issues so it is usually on that station. Therefore, because they play the same 30 songs on a 24 hour basis, my mind has become numb to any new sounds. Or, so I thought. Somehow yesterday I went for the volume and hit the tuner and I decided to be bold and spun that tuner and basically it was the same crap, but just on different stations. At that point I thought I had it back on the classic rock channel, but it turns out it was a new band that sounded like Florence And The Machine were possessed by Jim Morrison's soul. It was some local radio program and the band was Arune & The Alternatives.

I looked them up online and there is not much. They don't look like they are on a record label but they do like making videos. I found the one for the song that caught my attention. It made me realize when I was listening to them that it would be way better to have a bunch of bands that were doing their own thing then to have everyone auto tuned and singing the same kind of its not great but its not bad so we don't have to turn the station music. It is kind of like what you see on television. You have the same concept and then you have HBO and to a lesser extent Showtime and FX and AMC. Movies are the same way too. That is why this year it has been really refreshing to see things like The Help do so well. Yes, it was based on a popular book, but that does not mean it will do well. People took a chance on something different and it paid off. I love that. Anyway, below is the video for Arune & The Alternatives. Maybe someone will give them a chance too instead of signing on for another sequel of Whip My Hair.

I love new discoveries! This is kind of random, but a friend just introduced me to the song and video for "Somebody That I Used to Know" by Gotye - it is my new obsession!

we had a kick-ass radio station here, but it went under because it was 'indie'. So now they are online.

bhammountainradio.com

Love it like I do!

Wonder how much they paid for that advertisement?

College radio, Enty, college radio. It's the only thing between us and am earful of Britney Spears.

To me, this group sounds like Siouxsie and the Banshees mixed with the Psychedelic Furs.

Showin' my age.

My smooth jazz radio has gone just "smooth", it's not the same. Boohoo.

I can't place it, but to me it sounds like something that could be on a vietnam movie soundtrack... I like it.. different.. :D

Oh and Dubs, I just googled the group because I keep hearing the song in my head, which is a good thing. According to their website, they were on Lancer Radio last night, which is a radio station out of Pasadena City College. I'm thinking that Enty really was listening to the radio and liked what he heard. Not everyone in this world is motivated by money.

@ RQ: Listen to "Heart's a Mess" by Goyte. Beautiful song that was featured on Gossip Girl a couple of years ago.

As always, endlessly amused by ever-evolving the Enty backstory. Suspect it's fiction. Borrowing Mom's van and being forbidden to mess with the presets. That does have the ring of truth to it. Maybe a portrait of the Enty as a Young[er] Man?

Really, Enty? Does your parent's van have paneling on the side? Hmmm?

My guilty pleasure is Britney Spears. There. I said it.

OMG! They played last night on David Letterman and I was getting into them. I was wondering who they were and why they're not more popular lol. So awesome to see this article. I'm gonna look them up and preview their album and if I like I will buy :)

I'm always up for hearing new bands/music. This band reminds me of something out of the 60's.

While on the topic of radio, does anyone here that has Sirius have a good channel recommendation? I constantly switch between the 80's, 90's channel & Hits1, all three of which play the same songs over/over again.

Thank you for the write up! It's good to know people out there are enjoying our music cause it's hard to stay afloat amongst the Katy Perrys and Lady Gagas for little artists like us :)

www.thecurrent.org. It's a public radio station, and they play the BEST music. It's like a professional version of college radio.

@califblondy - if you can stream and you like good jazz..got to www.kcsm.org. The only 24 hr 100% jazz station left in the US I think..
I agree that college radio is the best..Even if you have some bumbling college students at least they present something original to listen to that isn't the same old,Clear Channel pablum they force us to hear.
