Patti LaBelle Being Sued - Yelled At Toddler - Threw A Punch At Mother

Kevin and Roseanna Monk live in an apartment in the upper west side of Manhattan. Patti LaBelle was staying in the same building temporarily while appearing on Broadway. One day, Rosanna Monk, who is a kindergarten teacher was letting her 18 month old daughter run around the lobby. It was at that moment that Patti LaBelle entered the lobby and said, "Why are you letting your kid run around like that?" Patti then started screaming at Roseanna and throwing water from a bottle into Roseanna's face and the baby's face. Ms. Monk picked up her kid and confronted Patti about what she had done and Patti took a swing at Roseanna before being ushered out of the lobby by her people. The thing is The NY Daily News did not get a denial from Patti's people that this happened. I don't think there is ever any call for someone to yell at a child or throw water in their face or take a punch at another person. Yes, we have not heard the other side to this and I am sure there must have been something else going on, but the water in the kid's face? Not good, no matter what.

  1. I say kudos to Patti LaBelle. A lot of us are sick of little brats acting like that.

    ;-P

  2. I say you never touch a child or do anything to a child without the parents permission. I live with my 2 year old granddaughter and no one is going to throw anything at her. I also carry, hold on, use stroller while in public. She would only go up and hug other people because all she knows is LOVE and sorry to say she thinks everybody loves her. So I don't let her loose in public. Even if I did there is NO reason to throw anything at her.

  3. The only time I would step in on someone else's child is if I saw the child being physically abused. McQueary - I'm talking to YOU!

  4. You left out the line about the child throwing up after the incident.

Um, they were in a secured lobby. Why can't she let the child run off some energy before being confined on their trip out or in the ride back up to their home.

Add this to the incident in Texas where a West Point cadet was beat up by her goons, and say there is trend.

  5. Oh, Patti, Patti, Patti. It's a toddler, for goodness sake. How much trouble could she possibly have been causing?

Patti used to seem like a nice lady. Maybe those hairpieces from the 80s caused a little permanent damage to her skull.

  7. This story makes me feel like there is some cognitive problem on Patti's part that's causing her to act inappropriately.

  8. Wow Patti going off the rails!

  9. I don't care if that kid cocked a leg and whizzed on her weave - you don't harm or threaten a toddler...EVER. Maybe the parent should've been more in control? Possibly. I agree that after her attack on the West Point cadet, etc. this lady needs a new additude adjustment. Even Divas must have limits. Except maybe Etta James or Aretha - they might get a pass (j/k)!

  10. One of my children is the same age as this little girl, and if Patti Labelle did this to my daughter, I would punch her lights out. I don't care WHO you think you are - you never touch a child (and especially not a defenseless baby).

  11. I would lose my ever loving mind if she did this to my son. Famous or not, bitch would have been sporting a black eye.

  12. clearly Patti is not used to living in a NYC Apt builiding.

It's not like the kid was banging on her door.

  13. Didn't this lady get sued by a guy who got punched by her security guard for standing too close to her luggage at the airport? Kind of lends creedence to the theory that this lady is full of ... herself.

If the child was running around the lobby, that is distracting and dangerous. Still Patti is the Adult and could have handled it much better. Throwing water in some strangers face is just wrong.

  15. Yeah, I get annoyed and roll my eyes when a parent is letting his/her little hellion scream and run all over the place, but to throw water in a toddler's face?? Come ON. OffSIDE.

  16. Wow I cant imagine Patti acting like this. By most account, she's usually the least-diva-ish of all the divas.

As a New Yorker that lives in an apt building, even if the lobby is enclosed a small child should not be running around in it. It is not the child's living room. Let the child run in the hallway if you must.

Many times I have come home after a long 10 hr day of work and the last thing I want to hear/see is a child running lose in the lobby. Small children are not aware of personal boundaries and will bump into you hard. Yes its a child but everyone has an "off" day where they dont want to hear noise.

Maybe the small child bump into Patti and the mother instead of apologizing got defensive. That happens alot.

  17. Not a fan of parents letting their children run around hotel lobbies - or inside people's houses for that matter. But it sounds like LaBelle was way out of line, unless there is more to this story. Throwing water at people sounds like an anger management issue.

I need to hear the other side of the story before coming up with an opinion. Something isn't adding up.

  22. Well Patti is a diabetic and if her glucose level was too high she could've been reacting to that. The diabetics I've known we're given to wide mood swings depending on their sugar levels.

  23. If I want screeching bags of meat running around, I'll have my own. And I don't.

  24. I get annoyed with other people's kids all the time, but it stops at an eyeroll and a glare.

Earlier today, I was on the bus, and there was a mom and her young kid who was in a stroller. I don't know how old, maybe 2 or 3. He had a terrible cough. Now, I understand that small children don't always remember to cover their mouth, or maybe don't even know that they're supposed to, but in this case, the kid seemed to be old enough to be told by his mom to cough into his elbow. She did not, in fact, she seemed to be kind of oblivious to the fact that her kid was sick...or even there. The man sitting next to her asked her if she didn't think she should ask her kid to cover his mouth (it really was a nasty cough, you could tell from the sound that he must have been feeling like crap). She just stared at the man, clearly offended that someone would say something like that.

But what I mean is, if you have a problem with something a little kid does in public, don't attack the kid, talk to the parents. Raising the child is THEIR job, not yours. Even if you're Patti Labelle.

  25. Interesting. I read this on ABC News earlier and they described the incident that as the mom was gathering luggage together for a family trip, the toddler was walking in the lobby.

  26. What a bitch piece of shit. Whatever happened to "don't do to others what you wouldn't want done to you"?

I hardly call myself a child-person, but that is fucking evil, taking out your hate on a child. What a pathetic, ugly woman.

  27. A lawsuit for trowing water?

    Seriously??

  28. *throwing even?

I love my iPad but FUCK IT!

  29. I discipline kids who aren't my own all the time. Most parents suck and say things like "kids will be kids!" No! You need to be parents. That being said, I would NEVER throw water on anyone, let alone a kid! It would have been enough to simply tell the kid to walk...yikes.

  30. @hamster party - Your profile picture makes me giggle.

I agree with this commenter on the NYDN:
"I can understand Ms. LaBelles' frustration, but she has got to calm down and slow her roll!"

  31. Patti was totally out of line and I don't know why you're sure there has to be something else going on meaning the toddler was acting up.

This wasn't a public place it was there apartment building and it sounds like they were trying to walk out and leave.

An eighteen month old is able to walk and shouldn't be treated like less than a person shoved in stroller. I don't have kids but I don't see why they can't walk around if they want to. Strollers are great and come in handy but aren't a requirement.

Nerdista, I discipline my sister's children not really my brothers because I am very close and have taken care of them their whole life. If a stranger tried to discipline them I would feel free to do the same to them, or say you, and your manners. I find this so condescending except in extreme cases and when their parent/supervisor isn't present.

  32. That's pretty bad but having flown last night I have to say that small children, and pets, should be warned about menopausal women. If they had sent menopausal women to Afghanistan the war would have been over in less than 24 hours. Ms. Monk should be reminded that a lobby is not a playground.
