David Beckham Agrees To Deal With French Team
David Beckham is giving up on Los Angeles and moving the brood to Paris. On January 1, he will sign a deal with a French soccer team that will see him there for the next 18 months and will pay him about $1.1M a month plus endorsements which is the largest base salary in the history of this level of French soccer. I know he wants to try and get ready for the Olympics next summer and thinks he can still compete with the big boys of European soccer, but I also bet his kids were not thrilled with the choice. Victoria was. Are you kidding me? Paris and her fashion line. She probably loves it. I think he will ultimately regret this decision. I don't know why, but just a hunch.
I think this contract might be his swan song and retire afterwards.
ReplyDeleteThe Beckhams had always traveled for David's career. This is another adventure, and am pretty sure the boys, and girl, will adapt easily. They'll also be closer to their Brit families.
I think he's more likely to be regretting moving to the US. Him and the missus love being celebrities, and his fame level went down significantly when he moved to the States. In LA, they are just two people with moderate fame, a dime a dozen. In England and the rest of the world, they are nearly royalty. Playing football with a US team does not have nearly the cachet that playing with a European team does.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Rita - this is his last contract. He wants to finish up playing in Europe. And this brings them closer physically to family and friends in England. It's the end of his career, and he needs to set himself up for the post-football endorsement deals.
I agree with both Seachica and Rita. I think they both realized that they would not be as famous over here in the states. Soccer still just doesn't have as big of a draw here in the States as it does in the rest of the world.
ReplyDeleteEnty posted the same news a few weeks ago and everyone had the same opinion as the previous posters.
ReplyDeleteI think they will like being closer to England. I'm sure 18 months in France is better than 18 months in LA.
^Enty posted the rumor that MAYBE Beckham will not be re-signing with Galaxy, and would want to be able to make the Olympics, so has to sign with a European clan.
ReplyDeleteToday is a confirmation.
It was my understanding that his teammates HATED him, can't remember where I read that.
ReplyDeleteA million dollars a MONTH?? Holy shitballs.
ReplyDeleteMy mistake. I still think they won't regret it.
ReplyDeleteWasn't his deal with Galaxy around $100 Million a year? Which would make $1 Million a month quite the set back on his life style.
ReplyDeleteI don't think he added that much to the Galaxy. It seemed like he was always either injured, or on loan to some other team for some reason, and didn't play here all that much. I bet the rest of the team is glad he's gone so someone besides Becks can get some accolades.
ReplyDeleteI think David will be playing Soccer in a wheelchair. It is his total identity I don't think he will know what to do when the day comes to retire.
ReplyDeleteI think he will make the 2012 team since it will be in England he is soccer royalty and still has a bit of steam in him. I think the gov't will overrule any coaches decisions if they don't want him on the team.
"I bet the rest of the team is glad he's gone so someone besides Becks can get some accolades."
ReplyDeleteHa! They can't be that naïve. Soccer's popularity may be inching up, but it's unlikely they'll have any big fame for a long time.
I went to a LA Galaxy game in September (they were playing Columbus Crew in Ohio). Main reason I got the tickets were to see Beckham. Guess who wasn't there? Yep, Beckham. But the game was great, Galaxy won in overtime 1-0.
