Rihanna Goes Off On Racist Man

Rihanna took to her Twitter to rant about a man who was staying at her hotel in Lisbon, Portugal. Apparently the guy ran into Rihanna in the lobby and said that black women should not be allowed to stay in the same hotels as whites. Wait, it gets worse. He also said black women were dogs, sl*ts, and that they all look like sh*t. I am so glad she went off on him. The guy probably did not know the hotel manager is also black and together Rihanna and the manager formed a duo of power who tore into the guy for his remarks. Great for them. I hope they shamed him into never doing it again, but chances are they didn't and he will just let it simmer inside him next time which is probably worse. It is always good to see your enemies.

Wow. Wonder where the schmuck came from. From what I've visited, Portugal is quite the diverse country.

Whatever, she did well. And yeah, I think the guy will watch out what he says next time. I've learned that when you embarrass a schumck publicly, he tends to watch his step afterwards. That guy will most probably find some more of his white power friends and hide behind them. Rotten sick mentality, in need of a good brain drilling.

I am glad she did it. It's funny to see the expression on some of these racists faces when they see me or a fellow person of color in their luxury hotels, spa's, etc, that is NOT there working on/for them. It is such an expression of awe/mixed with disgust and curiosity, I just laugh and brush it off.

Good for her. That guy probably won't change just bc he got told off which means he'll be an idiot again to someone else & hopefully they will also tell him how useless his opinion is.

Good for her! I will never fully understand why a person's skin color matters to some people.

what fucking year is this? I cannot believe people still think that way.

Then again, being an immature idiot, he might have enjoyed the attention. I kinda think the best attitude towards people like him is no reaction at all...treat him like he's so low and insignificant that he doesn't even register.

What was her hashtag that was fuzzed out and began with an N??

One can only hope the stupid neanderthal understands the errors of his ways but I really doubt it. If he's stupid enough to actually think black women are inferior then he isn't going to understand how racism is wrong.

They guy was in the hotel lobby in his underwear?

I think that's great, but did she have to use the "n" word in her tweets? I mean, she's making a point against racism and uses one of the most racist terms?

Good point, @Patty.

^Apparently it's empowering for black people to own the nasty degrading word.

Personally, I don't understand. But than again, I was never called the N word, and my ancestors were prosecuted for their religion, not the color of their skin.

People should first look at themselves before making a rude remark.

Wish that every single racist could have a run-in like this one.

Good on her for speaking out. All it takes for evil to flourish is for good people to do nothing.

Oh minorities in Europe (especially southern Europe and Mediterranean) are NOT treated the same as minorities in the US. Anyone black is probably an immigrant from Africa and therefore is usually treated like crap. Even in Spain, immigrants from Latin America who speak Spanish are second class, especially if the look remotely indigenous. It's sad. There is no effort to be politically correct whatsoever. They use all kinds of words most people in the US would not DARE. I used to be bothered by hyper-political correctness, but now I mostly miss it.

Take away the skin and muscles, and we're all just a bag of bones. Racism exists in every race and culture. Until little green aliens come down to conquer the earth...then it will be humans against the green aliens.

I think she was using the N word ironically. The real question is, how did she know he was wearing tighty whiteys?

Jasmine said...

@Caroline- WOW, I did not know that about other parts of the world.

Thank you for sharing your perspective :))

And yeah, people bitch and moan about our being too "p.c." here but I dont think it's such a bad thing to call people out on their slurs towards other people. Especially because it's usually the dominant group calling out the marginalized groups.

and yay Rihanna! Though i agree with Patty- the n-word (while empowering to some) does seem to negate the point she was trying to make a bit.

And yet the predominantly American people on this board doesn't hesitate to label LeAnn Rimes, Eddie Cibrian, or Renee Zellweger "squinty"?

I’m glad she said something to him, racism is unacceptable. However I have to say as a black woman myself I do not appreciate that women like Rihanna represent me.

She is foul mouthed, dresses like a hooker and a terrible role-model for her fans. I just hope people realise that there are black women out there that have respect for themselves and she could have still made a point in a more grown up respectable manner.

Only when it comes to racism. Then suddenly everyone (here) wants to be the pc police and assure others that they despise this kind of behavior. Because it's socially required and people fear the backlash if they don't speak out against it. Sadly, you can't say the same thing about misogyny. It is still socially accepted to look down on women and see them as inferior.
You don't have to go that far to read how women eagerly defend their right to be allowed to not be pc when it comes to use misogynistic slurs. Apparently, it makes a lot of effort for them to keep those words to themselves and use a slur that doesn't degrade the female sex. It says a lot about those women, imo.

What's funny is that Rihanna calls herself a n***er in her tweet and calls the man a c**t. So, how does that make her look? Like an idiot I would say. She complains that the man a) was racist and b) misogynistic towards black women and she ironically uses those slurs herself and actually perpetuates the belief of black women being inferior with it. Very clever, Rihanna.

Also, I'm sure there are a lot of black people who don't appreciate other black people referring to themselves as n***ers just as much as I, as a woman, can't understand when other women use the word c**t to refer to themselves as such and/or to degrade another person with it, be it a woman or a man.

I don't know if you can take an airhead like Rihanna seriously when it comes to speak out against either racism or sexism.
I only have to remember a few of her interviews, especially the one she gave to Vogue (if I remember correctly) about her use of the c-word.

Eh...I give her a pass. She probably tweeted this right after it happened and she was all fired up about it.

I'm portuguese and I don't see a portuguese person saying this, just on account of not having the vocabulary to be so specific. Still it's not unheard of, unfortunately. We have a very harsh colonialist/ colonial war past and the older generations can still be very racist. Younger urban people are mostly open minded.

Most people here joked that the weird part was that the hotel manager was black.

I'm truly embarrassed that all this had to happen in my country.
