I agree with the Melissa McCarthy nom, but I don't agree with Bridesmaids up for best original screenplay. It really wasn't that good or funny. If Melissa McCarthy wasn't in it I wouldn't have even finished watching it I don't think. She made that movie.

ReplyDeleteHugo was extraordinary, and one of the few films that actually used 3-D technology to its advantage. It really should win best picture, IMO.
ReplyDeleteMoneyball was good, but in a more competitive year it wouldn't receive much notice. Brad and Jonah are good but not amazing.
ReplyDeleteThe academy did what it could in an off-year. Midnight in Paris and Gary Oldman are my faves. The Bridesmaids love is a little embarrassing tho. Fun film but not high art. And I usually wish awards shows gave more love to comedies.
I really need to get my contacts or wear my glasses. I saw Butthead when I was reading the foreign language nominees!

ReplyDeleteI think it was overhyped for me. So I went in expecting alot and then it ended up just being ok. I'm not saying it was a bad film. But I don't think it was as good as people hyped it up to be. And I definitely don't think it deserves an Oscar.
First and foremost – Transformers: Dark Side of the Moon gets 3 nominations and Michael Fassbender, who was incredible in Shame, wasn’t? Does that make sense to anyone because it certainly doesn’t to me. The Academy obviously doesn’t approve of NC-17 movies, even when the performance of the stars (Carey Mulligan included) were incredible. i.e. Ryan Gosling in Blue Valentine.

Brad was great in Moneyball and I am a huge fan, but was it an Oscar worthy performance? No. Tree of Life? Yes. Doesn't the Academy like when actors play "real" people?
Yeah Jonah Hill! He was great in Moneyball and his nomination was deserved.
Someone else who was robbed? Tilda Swinton.
Someone else I am over? Rooney Mara. Her walking dead stick is overplayed and tired. (Yes, I know it's for a movie role, but enough already.)
Melissa McCarthy being nominated for Bridesmaids is a joke, IMO. I don't get what all the hype is with this movie. I know I am in the minority here when I say I didn't think it was that great, but that's just me. I think with the hype made me expect something AMAZING and MIND-BLOWING and that was not what I got – I got the complete opposite.
I agree with Clooney and to see him get up and smirk all over himself just gives me gas.

So many good Indy films this past year and this list just reads like "we want these folks to come so we can have higher ratings."

ReplyDelete@Sadie- I'm another person who felt like I suffered through Bridesmaids. I loved MM in it, but it felt predictable and followed the group comedy scenario a little too closely for me. I'm a chick and the Oscar nod for the script kind of feels like a pat on the head.

I'm thrilled Melissa McCarthy was nominated, but I agree with everyone who didn't like "Bridesmaids". I know it was popular, but it just didn't appeal to me. I didn't even bother to finish it. Of course, most of Kristen Wiig's comedy is lost on me, so this isn't a big surprise.

ReplyDeleteFassbender was robbed because that whole movie was right out of Mask of Sanity. Believe me, those folks in Hollywood don't want to be unmasked. They do NOT want anyone to know just how damaged they are. Reality TV would be the first thing to go and you know there's big money in that - and not for any actors either. They want that movie swept under the rug stat.

Agree that Octavia will win for The Help. Believe Pitt will win for Moneyball, in the honorary "this is for your full career, not this particular movie" award category previously given to Denzel Washington and Elizabeth Taylor for mediocre movies.
Leonardo Di Caprio is also in line for one of those some year, as is Depp at some point, provided he doesn't completely trash his reputation before then.
The big surprise for me was the nomination of "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close." That got terrible reviews.

Directing noms for Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen and Terrence Malick. Three men that electrified cinema during the 70's. If they had nominated Steven Spielberg and Roman Polanski as well it would have been a celebration of masters. Spielberg has Lincoln next year. He'll get his then. Right now he can be content with his 4 billion dollar net worth fortune.
Editing nomination for Scorsese's longtime editor Thelma Schoonmaker. The best cutter in the industry. Besides Lindsay's coke dealer.
Two Oscar noms for composer John Williams. This makes him the most nominated person in Oscar history with 50 nominations during his lifetime.Which will be 50 more than Lindsay Lohan will ever get.
Moneyball screenplay noms Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin. Steven wrote Schindler's List and Aaron wrote Sports Night, The West Wing and The Social Network. He also told Sarah Palin to go fuck herself last year. For all those things he is my personal hero for life.
I loved the movie Bridesmaids and it would be nice if it won for a comedy screenplay...but as much as I love Melissa McCarthy...I was shocked she got a nomination.

ReplyDeletePitt will not will for "Moneyball" but he was semi-worthy of a nomination for his performance. It was a talky, difficult role without a lot of action. Not his kind of thing but he pulled it off.
Hill was good as well. Maybe not nomination-good but good enough.

Fassbender and Swinton both gave the best performance of their peers, and they each sit (most probably) at 6th place. What a joke, AMPAS. Meanwhile, we'll see ads everywhere saying 21 Jump Street: featuring Academy award-nominated Jonah Hill. :S
