Karl Lagerfeld is kind of a tool. Have I ever told you my Karl Lagerfeld story? He was sitting behind me on a plane once and chewed Nicotine gum like it was going out of style. Literally he would chew a piece for 10 minutes and pop in another piece and each time he would finish a piece he would hand it to the flight attendant. If she was not there when he finished he would ring the call button until she would come get it from him. The only thing he did was mutter. That is what I would call it. He was talking to himself and doing nothing but chewing he gum and talking to himself. If he had reached forward and whispered that he was going to kill me before the flight was over, I would have been convinced.
Anyway, there was a woman next to me who was amazing. She was very old at the time and very French and a fashion legend and kept stealing the good things off my plate and eating them herself but she also would turn around every so often and have a word with Karl, who she knew, and would say something to him in French and he would give her a fake smile. I think she was teasing him. My French is limited to the more subtle French words like French fry or French onion soup.
Anyway, Karl said in an interview that Adele is a little fat but that she has a pretty face and great voice. Ass. He liked Lana Del Ray because he says she has a great body with nice implants.
I'm surprised he didn't call Lana fat. Not because she is, but because he doesn't seem to tolerate anything but model-skinny.

I'm all about being comfortable in your skin and beauty comes in all shapes and sizes, but eventually people WILL have to recognize the health risks that go along with that. Sometimes its not as simple as "big can be beautiful, too" It absolutely can. But just like scary skinny is just that, scary and unhealthy......so can being too big.

c) For those of you saying he's out of his mind for thinking that people care what he has to say: The problem is in the fashion world people DO care what he has to say. A LOT. And it was in an interview. Where people ask questions. Its not like he's running through the streets shouting it to anyone that will listen. They asked, he answered. So the "no one cares about what he has to say" argument is really weak in this case.

ReplyDeleteThe funny thing is that he used to be very fat, himself. Then he went on this crazy diet and lost something like 90 lbs in a year. I saw his diet book in a magazine once and it was rather impractical. I remember you had to order special protein powder from a company in France and eat a bunch of rabbit meat.
Karl WAS asked, for him this was mild and his type of complimentary.

ReplyDeleteAdele is a beautiful woman with a wonderful voice. A little larger than our current beauty ideals, but probably smaller than half her fans. I love it that someone who's not built like a noodle can make it in the entertainment industry.

ReplyDeleteI am fat, have been very open about that. I loathe the assumptions about people that are made based on how they look. I go to the gym and have a personal trainer. I have walked the Inca Trail, and when I walked the Inca Trail I lost no weight. Just as some people have a hard time putting on weight, others can't lose it, no matter what they do. I wouldn't mind the obvious fat comment so much, if there weren't assumptions being made about fat people. We do not all have health problems, or are lazy, or do no exercise. We are not all stuffing our faces 24/7 with 'bad' food. I agree that people who are not exercising and eating badly are affecting their health - but there are slim and skinny people who do the same. They, however, are not held to the same standards as the fat people are. Weight is not the only indicator of health. Let's hold everyone accountable or none.

Adele is absolutely gorgeous, and she's a large woman. I don't think there's anything wrong with saying that -- and that's one of Kunty Karl's less-offensive proclamations.

I totally disagree with his assertion that Lana Del Ray is beautiful, though. That chick is generic as hell and plastic as all get-out.

Overweight men are still able to wield tons of political or cultural power without any repercussions. Women? Not usually. That's partly why Adele is a revelation.
