Russell Brand Walks Away From $20M

Katy Perry and Russell Brand have already settled their divorce. The two announced yesterday they have resolved all the issues and now they just have to wait for everything to be finalized. Basically Russell Brand walked away from the $20M he is owed from their 18 months of marriage. $1M a month. Katy had a good couple of years. He also walked away from spousal support and the only thing he wanted was his Charlie Brown toothbrush. If you think about it, the divorce was about as boring as their marriage. But, it is also good to see that Russell was willing to walk away from all the money he could have had. A few more flops like Arthur though and he is going to wish he took that $20M.

  1. Refreshing, a couple taking the high road.

  2. None of that money was his, she earned hers, he earned his. They weren't married long enough for it to be considered "theirs".

  3. Wonder if this is the answer to the blind about the raging homosexual father-in-law.

  4. I'm glad to hear he did take the high road. I *did* think Arthur was really funny though! :)

Something terrible must've happened to make their divorce so sudden and fast imo.

  5. Besides his movies, I don't think he actually brought in much money during their marriage. He's been giving free shows for a while now (on college campuses and a deal where people do volunteer work and get a free ticket) - maybe since he knew the split was coming, he didn't see a point in bringing in money that he'd have to share?

  6. Maybe he didn't want to feel like he owed Katy something. I also I agree w/ what @EmEyekay & @RenoBlondee said.

I like Katy Perry, but it boggles my mind that she made that much money in the past couple of years.

  8. Maybe they decided to be, you know, civil about it. Just because a marriage doesn't work out, doesn't mean the people don't care about each other or want what's best for their ex. Russell doesn't strike me as a high-maintenence guy, anyway.

I have been there with that type of split. It's called you have been angered or hurt to the point you just never ever want to have to see or deal with that person again. I wanted my cats and what I came into the relationship with. That was all. No fighting over joint posessions or anything like that. Just get it over with. Its called pain.

    And I liked Athur.

  11. Wait -- if Russell is the type to give free shows in exchange for volunteer work, why would it surprise anyone that he didn't want to look like a gold digger and take Katy's money? Maybe down deep (below the horny man that he is) there's a decent heart. I've always liked both of them and I wish they could have worked it out.

I still think their marriage was fake, him to get exposure in North America and her to get exposure in the UK. Contract ended, they walked away.

Her music makes me furious. She just yells her songs and is everything bad about music.

  13. This doesn't sound like the couple from the blind. If Russel wanted her money he could have taken it and didn't.

  14. I don't agree at all that he's doing this out of pain and just wants to walk away quickly.

I think quite the opposite. I think they don't have any ill will towards each other. I think they just fizzled out and their schedules just got in the way. If you still like the person, you just don't want to be married anymore, then why would you want their money? Not everyone sees things like this as an opportunity to make money. Not everyone is a dick about stuff like that. Shit, my neighbor caught my townhouse on fire and I didn't sue her. I got my insurance money and that was enough to replace what was lost. Not everyone sees dollar signs in bad situations.

PLUS if he did cheat, that's another reason to just say I don't want anything and walk away. So all that doesn't get drug out and scrutinized.

  15. I broke down and watched the remake of Arthur the other day. At first I hated it, and hated the female lead....then, she grew on me and I actually liked it in the end. He is quite a good actor

  16. It's only money. He'll make more.

  17. Taking the money would have made him look pathetic. He was already getting slammed in the press about potentially getting the $20m, so I think part of it is based on pain/anger & wanting it to just be done, and the other part is just a savvy PR move. And it's working; everyone respects him for just moving on.

  18. It is either guilt or maybe he loves her. I'm choosing the latter.

I have a new respect for Russell, while technically he could have taken her money, he didn't. I think this speaks volumes to Russell's character. It is her money - she earned it. I love it when people are good deep down & take the high road. I'm going to make it a point to see Aurthur now. :))

  20. Wait--she's richer than he is?

  21. ^She's sold a ton of records!

  22. Not sure what his motives are. I think his unselfishness is admirable.

  23. This is the answer to the BV from a week or 2 ago. Russell has a secret about her family and she was going to make it a smooth divorce in order to keep his mouth shut. I believe the secret about Katy's father is that he's really gay.

  24. I don't see him as much of a guy concerned about money. It is refreshing to see this. I have mixed emotions about it. I do believe that marriage is a partnership and that you should be entitled to group property gained during the marriage. But if he doesn't want it, kudos to him.

That said, I don't think it is fair to see someone decide to leave their spouse for someone else, or cheat, or simply decide they want a divorce and expect the other to get nothing. I also don't think it's fair when one decides to leave the marriage and demand half. I don't know why the filing party and the grounds for the divorce don't come into play with this kind of thing.

  25. I knew he wasn't going to take the money. He fancies himself a gentleman.

Now imagine if Nick Lachey had done this for Jessica Simpson. Pigs would be flying.

  26. @crila or it could be Heidi/Seal.

I think Katy's father is a kooky jesus freak. But I don't think he is gay.

  27. He may not have taken the money, but did she give him monthly support while they were together? Could have been outright cash payments, also travel expenses, car, clothing, housing. What's his immigration status? Did he get a green card out of the marriage?

  28. I find it curious that when the male in these celebrity divorces has more money, the response is pretty much adament that the woman should take all the money she can get because she deserves it (shared assets, blah blah), but in this case, where the Katy made more money, he shouldnt take any because she earned it??!! I dont get it.

  29. I agree with you, Lori. I think the whole 50 / 50 thing is not fair. If you didn't come into the marriage with that earning potential, how can you say you "earned" it from your spouse, who did the actually earning? It promotes gold-digging. Yes, if someone gave up their career, they should be supported, but only to the extent they could have done so for themselves, I think.
All that said, I have a great appreciation that he walks with his head high and takes nothing. He has enough, he doesn't need more, and he doesn't need it from her. And, I don't they are the blind - if they were, he'd get a pay out to say quiet, not the other way around. Oh - last thing - I lost respect for her and her smiley face on the divorce petition. Divorce is sad, no matter what. That smiley face was either hostile or grossly immature, pathetic either way.

  30. I wish they had made it. Russell is weird and wicked funny. Katy is kooky.
I too think Russell fancies himself a gentleman. Good on you Russell.

  31. "The only thing he wanted was his Charlie Brown toothbrush." This is funny as hell.

Go Russell! I think he is acting dignified.

    ReplyDelete
  32. He's not exactly broke himself. He's made a few million from the movies he did and has had two bestseller books. I have a feeling he'll still be making money years from now while she'll be dried up.

    ReplyDelete
  33. so... if the divorce settlement details are sealed and no one really knows how much money way given, couldn't they still be the couple in the blind?

she didn't have to make the payment as part of the settlement, perhaps it's just a simple bank transfer (off the books - out of the courts - off the records).

i think she has more to lose from this than him. he was pretty upfront with his "whoopsies" over the years, i think she has more damaging skeletons in the closet.

    ReplyDelete
  34. This is just as much nonsense as the first time Enty claimed that Russell was in for a big settlement. There never was a $20 million dollar payout to walk away from.

Artist income can be accounted so many ways, it would be easy for a divorce attorney to make her net income look equal to his during the period of the marriage. He counsel took one look at the initial discovery (if it even went that far) and told him it wasn't worth pursuing.

  35. Weezy, Russell made a small mountain of money in the UK before he ever did a film here. Plus he did well with the Aldous Snow movies, dude's not hurting for money and doesn't need anything from the honk-voiced blowup doll.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I thought Arthur would suck, but it was actually a pretty funny and good movie! Nick Nolte is crazy in it!

    ReplyDelete
  37. @Lori - I think it depends on the situation. In this case, Russell was already an established star and had money. He doesn't really need her money.

I know what I am entitled to, being married, but I cannot fathom trying to take my husband to the cleaners if we were to ever divorce as I didn't help earn a dime of his money. But it depends on the situation. Like if cheating was involved, for example.
