The heart has been ripped out of my childhood.
As I said yesterday, my sister is a huge fan and since she's my older sister, I watched the Monkee's a lot! I saw him perform as Vince Fontaine in Grease and he was great! He was so dang adorable and easily my favorite Monkee with Peter coming in second.
I am sad to hear that he went to the hospital for chest pains the night before and this wasn't prevented.
so sad, rest well in music heaven davy...
Sad. I loved The Monkees when I was little, though they were more my Mom's era than mine. I was more of a fan of Mickey as a child, but I like Davy much more as an adult. He will be remembered.
Loved Davy, as billybob said, part of my childhood is gone, soo bummed.
And the thing is their music was really good, too.
:(
My childhood is slowly drifting away, too. Thank god for Nick at Nite for us 80s kiddies.
Off topic but do you think that Michael Nesmith looks like the oldest Jonas brother?
I love that you're allllll over the horrible awful non-celebrity related stories, but you are always slow to the death post. In some cases (Etta) you don't even bother. I don't get it.
RIP Davy. They played reruns on a local channel when I was younger. I loved watching them. He always seemed to be the one that loved being a Monkee the most.
Damn! What a sweet little cherubic face!! I loved me some Davy back in the day. Am I the only one who thinks he looks like a very young (and cute) Russell Brand....one who's had a bath and combed his hair.
I feel bad he died, but while he was on tv and records, I was listening to CSN&y, jefferson airplane, pink rhinocerous, jimi hendrix, janis- so he seemed too young for me. I very much wanted to like the Monkees, but I just cldnt. Their music was pretty ok tho. Rip davy.
@The Bitch Next Door -- you aren't the only one - I've always thought Russell was his 'love child' lol.
RIP Davy, I loved that little side to side dance move that was stolen by Axl ;)
Someone pointed out yesterday that the 60s were *50* years ago. WTH did it get to be half a century?! I'm not ready for pop stars to die of old age things.
Whoever said Mike Nesmith looks like the oldest Jonas Brother - YES. I always knew his looks were odd. You've hit the nail on the head. They could be father/son.
totally agree, part of childhood gone. Growing in the 80s Monkees reruns were as much a part of life as Benetton rugby shirts and old school Madonna and all that. My sister and friends would watch the show and then reenact scenes or sing the songs. I always got stuck being the wierd one, Mickey. My sister meanwhile always wanted to be Michael Nesmith and i think actually has some of his solo albums... to me just as much of an impact on my childhood as Whitney Houston, actually even more so.
One time my sister told my parents when we were kids that she thought the Beatles were ok but they shouldn't be trying so hard to be the Monkees... still a joke in my family.
RIP, Davy, you did good.
Isn't it refreshing that we didn't have to hear tales of drug abuse squandered talent bad mistakes. I haven't read anyone say a bad word against him. The monkees shaped a lot of people and they hold a special place in so many hearts. RIP Davy and thank you.
He was so adorable. I loved him for years.
So sad.
I got turned on to the Monkees when MTV (I think?) started re-running the show in the 80s. I was more of a Mike Nesmith kinda girl but I did think Davy was dreamy too.
My favorite all-time Davy moment? When he was on Scooby Doo, of course! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oxVkyN4KqZo
My two little girls love these books by Sandra Boyton and one of their favorites is Personal Penguin. Davey Jones sings the song based on the book and they play it on KidsPlace Live all the time. He was just soooo darned good at what he did. *sigh*
RIP Davey Jones
I loved the Monkees. I had 4 of their albums I played endlessly on my little turntable from Sears. like chopchop, I was more of a Nesmith fan (we're both from TX) but I loved Jones and Daydream Believer. RIP.
RIP Davy Jones, you will be forever missed!!
Count me in too on losing a bit of my childhood. I grew up watching re-runs of the Monkees and the Brady Bunch (and all of the other great shows). Davy was always my favorite. He was so darned cute. And the Brady Bunch episode he was on is in my top 5 episodes.
Seeing that makes me both very happy and very sad.
I'm so sad. He was my first crush and I lived to watch their show on Saturdays. By all accounts he was a good guy and he will be missed.
Love you, Davy. Looks like you caught the last train to Clarksville, but I am and always will be a believer.
<3
Davy jones on scooby doo was awesome. I remember sonny and Cher. Cass Elliot. Jerry reed. Harlem globetrotters. God who else was there?
So, so sad about this. I discovered them through Nick at Night and Davy was my immediate favorite. I think he was my first "celeb" crush. I think it's pretty cool that they had a resurgence from being on Nick at Night.
Does anyone remember when Davy did a guest appearance on the sitcom "My Two Dads"? (Staci Keanan, Paul Reiser & Greg Evigan) I remember squealing when he came on.
R.I.P. Davy
I loved my two dads and I def remember that!!!
Part of my childhood/teen years is gone, too. My friends and I all watched the '86 Monkees marathons and became huge fans. Loved the show, and their music, for being so-called "manufactured", stood the test of time. They all had real talent, unlike most later prefab confections.
I was watching The View (which I never watch) while having my teeth cleaned yesterday, and they played the "Daydream Believer" clip in honor of Davy. Hard to believe that wasn't even a year ago, and they all looked so well...I got a little choked up.
RIP Davy - you will be missed.
Netta and AmyMI ..You must be my age because yeah, I remember all that.
My aunt was a menopause baby cuz she was only a few years older than me and we used to watch the Monkees and have "dance contests" to dance just like Davy. He was just so dreamy back then.
