Your Turn

I would love to know the first time you either gave or received flowers. I remember sending to some girl in high school. Thought it was a big deal to send those dozen carnations. Must have set me back more for delivery than the cost of the flowers.

  1. My mother sent me the biggest, most beautiful red roses for my 21st birthday when I was in uni. I saw the flowers, and being the nosy bitch that I am, checked the card. I was stunned they were for me. For some reason everybody thought they were from a guy. When I took them to my room, some tacky bitch actually had the nerve to ask me to give her one.

  2. I was sick and laying in bed, and one of my best friends (who had a liked me) came by and brought me roses. I was really embarrassed because I'd never received roses before and didn't know what to say/do. I'm the worst

  3. I gave my mother flowers all the time - mostly dandelions.

I can't remember who I received flowers from first but the ones that have mattered most came from my husband. Very few so very memorable! ;-)

In recent years, my sweet little boy picks flowers for me and I love them.

I remember picking clover for my first grade teacher during recess.

  6. My cousin and her daughter sent me flowers at college for my 18th birthday. 28 yrs later, it's still one of the best gifts I've ever gotten.

When cousin's daughter graduated HS in '97, I started sending her flowers for her birthday. Amber has continued the tradition by sending bouquets to my daughter. It was balloon bouquets till she was 8. Last month, my daughter received a cookie bouquet from Amber.

It's the highlight of her birthday b/c she thinks she's hot stuff when the deliveryman brings them to the house!

  7. I can't remember, but I can promise you I was embarrassed by it. I never liked receiving flowers because of how awkward they made me feel.

Now I love them because almost husband treats them as everyday things and not some trite valentines present.

  8. During HS, we would have carnation sales. Sometimes I had the courage to send one to the boy I had a crush on, but never received any my self for most of the 4 years. Until the last sale my senior year. Between my friends and the young man who is now my husband, I carried about 10-12 around that day. Yes, I felt special!

  9. I think the first time I received flowers, I was about 18, and they were from a guy I barely knew (a friend of a friend) - he just showed up at my house with them (I think it was my birthday - too long ago to remember, lol). Really freaked me out.

My (now former) bf would send me flowers all the time. The first time was shortly after my mother died - I was flying home on my birthday (yes, she died a week before my bd), so he wanted to do something to lift my spirits. It was a very sweet gesture.

  10. My then-boyfriend brought me flowers when I returned from a 5-day high school trip. It was sort of awkward, nice flowers though. I always thought it was odd he brought me flowers then but not when I returned after months away at university.

  11. We also had carnation day at my school. One time my best friend and I sent them to our favorite teachers. The next day, our history teacher gave us a heart shaped box of chocolates in front of everyone. We were embarrassed.

  12. I don't remember the first official flower delivery, but we had those carnation sales in HS, too, I remember getting those.

The short one used to pick me dandelions - I'd put them in a vase every time. Doesn't do that as much anymore.

I love receiving (and giving) flowers! Especially when they're "just because".

  13. Giving my mom a bouquet of dandelions we'd made in class on Mother's Day, I believe in first grade.

  14. I was 16 first boyfriend, his parents were always going away for the holidays (they had money..we are just plain folk) anyway he always sent me flowers, a stuffed animal or something special from where ever he'd been.
Now I only get flowers when my honey is in trouble.

  15. This guy I was hanging out with at the end of high school sent me flowers. I liked him before he did that, but the flowers kind of ruined it for me. I still don't like getting flowers. Although someone (a friend) gave me a packet of sweetpea seeds in a good luck card once. I thought that was quite lovely.

Also, I read "I would love to know the first time you either gave or received..." and immediately thought this was going to be a dirty post.

  16. In seventh grade my boyfriend of a month gave me three roses for Sweetest Day. I didn't even know what Sweetest Day was, I just remember being really embarrassed.

My soon-to-be husband now treats me to flowers randomly. He came home last week with my favorite pizza, a bottle of wine, and a bouquet of flowers just to make my day.

  17. When my oldest sister turned 40, each of us was to send 8 roses to her office, so by the end of the day she would have 40. Another crazy sister got it in her mind that my brother in law should handle it with the local florist but didn't tell the rest of us. So she ended up getting double the deliveries and double the flowers. She loved it. 16 flower deliveries at work would have sent me over the edge.

  18. I was in a play when I was 16 years old and my mom brought me roses. I don't know if it was the first time, but it's what sticks out most in my memory.

  19. I was a junior in high school - my bf was 19 and worked - he sent me some carnations to my house - my parents thought we were getting too serious if he was sending me flowers. They didn't forbid me to see him, but they did discourage it until I realized he was cheating on me and I dumped him.

My now husband sent me roses at work a few times (a medical clinic) - it really made me feel special.

@loubea - yeah, 16 deliveries in one day would have freaked me out - and management wouldn't have been too happy about it either.

  20. Maja. With a J., you don't like receiving flowers? Feel free to pass them on to me.

  21. I love flowers - they just bring a smile to my face :)

The first time I ever received flowers was from a friend in high school when I was 18. He gave bouquets of yellow roses (yellow for friendship) to his 3 closest female friends. I was so surprised, but they were beautiful and I loved them.

The next time I got flowers was 4 years later when I met my first boyfriend/now-husband.

When I lived in Bath, I'd go buy the cheapo discounted 1 pound flowers the flower stalls sold on Sundays - a bunch of daffodils or something for 1 pound, and put them in a vase in our shared kitchen just to brighten up the place.

Then I made a similar setup for my favorite prof there, an English one, when I found out it was her birthday. I just put the vase of daffodils on her desk before class - never mentioned it, she was just surprised and happy.

  22. Mikey, sure! Except I don't get any flowers, because I'm married, and my husband knows I don't enjoy getting them. Nothing wrong with flowers per se, I'm just not big on "romantic gestures", that's all :)

  23. I had the biggest crush on a player at an improv comedy theater in my hometown. At the time I was in high school and painfully shy. Before I went off to college, I sent him a tasteful bouquet. He found out who I was through a neighbor of mine who also worked at the theater and sent the loveliest thank you note. We didn't have any communication after that, because, like I said, I was painfully shy. I looked him up online a couple of years ago and found out that he had become a writer for a couple of popular sitcoms, which makes sense because he was super talented and funny.

  24. I'm surprised at how many folks don't like getting flowers or feel embarrassed receiving them. I love it when my BF gives me them. Though the last time, the neighbor pointed out that he must be apologizing for something or guilty of something. FWIW, neither of those applied!

I can't remember the first time I received them, but I gave them to my then BF in college. He was embarrassed to get them from a girl (he saw it as a male thing to do, not a female thing), so I haven't given them to a guy again.

  25. In the mid-80's I was walking down the street in Toronto when I saw Lawrence Gowan he's now the lead singer of Styx yes I'm that old. influenced, by a cheesy commercial I quickly bought a rose from a flower stand and as I walked by his I handed him the rose. He was stunned and I smiled and walked away. When I turned back he was standing and smiling at me.

  26. the first time I got them from a guy was our first date... apparently he'd had a crush on me for a while. I'd never gotten flowers before and I was just floored. We dated for a while -- nearly got engaged -- and he gave me a lot of flowers. BUT he was also an egomaniacal talk-talk-talker (roommates asked me if I was on hold on the phone!). He's twice-divorced now.

  27. I never send or get flowers, but just so happen to send a friend a plant for her housewarming today. I guess not flowers, but close.

  28. Hubby brought me flowers last week and my first question was “What have you broken?”. He just thought I’d like some flowers.......bless him. As a child I used to make long necklaces out of daisies.....I must have made the longest daisey chains evah!

  29. I was working at a prison here in New Orleans (23 years old).I got a call for the front desk. They said I had a special delivery. I had no clue what that meant. It was a huge bouquet of different colored roses. They were beautiful. I thought they were from my boyfriend. They were not . My second thought was one of the inmates. I didn't want to be the object of an inmates affection. It was three days later a deputy that I didn't even know told me he sent them. I had never even spoke to this guy before. I thought that it was sort of strange. The flowers were lovely though.

  31. After my parents divorced, when I would fly over to see my dad he would give me a bunch of Anthuriums. They are quite peculiar and I don't remember if I liked them and that is why he gave them to me or if he liked them and that is why I got them?

  32. On my 16th birthday, my father had delivered to the house a dozen long stem red roses. He said that he wanted me to always remember that he was the first to give me roses. I still cherish that thought, many years later.

  33. The first flowers I bought were for my Mom. I chewed a lot of gum in middle school and during Lent I would stop. One year I saved all the $$ each week and would buy her carnations. The florist who was friends with my dad would throw in other carnations because I told him what I was doing with the flowers. Not exactly a romantic sending of flowers but I'd forgoten about this until you asked.

I've only gotten flowers 4 times in my life. High school graduation, my wedding day (didn't have a traditional ceremony, went to a JOP), this past valentines day, and my birthday last month. I send my mom flowers every year for mothers day.

  36. When I was a freshman in high school, I stole my friend's boyfriend (he was a junior with a car, suddenly friendship didn't matter to me). He was driving me home one night and stopped at the end of the driveway, next to the mailbox. He told me to reach in the mailbox, because he thought there might be a surprise in there. There was a rose! Oh lord, my 14 year old heart was all aflutter.
Two weeks later he broke up with me (in a note, that he had my sister deliver to me) because I wouldn't kiss him.

  37. I bought weekly fresh flowers for my first wife. Upon telling her I also did it for myself, she never felt special again. My second wife sent me flowers to my job. Although I thought it was a very nice gesture, it didn't feel very masculine. Being a victim of molestation, I have very hard lines of what is and what isn't masculine. My present g/f receives them on special occasions and for days that should be elevated as being special. Any old day of the week.

  38. My dad for Valentines when I was a kid. In HS, I got some from a boy who had a crush on me from another school. I was not interested and felt so bad he'd taken the trouble to do so.

  39. When I was 17 my boyfriend at the time showed up at my front door with a huge bouquet of carnations. This was my Chanukah present. We were actually just talking about it a few weeks ago. The gesture was nice, but I spent an entire day picking out the perfect wallet for him. He had/has a huge problem buying gifts for people and that was the best he could do. I still have a photo of the flowers. I was hoping for something more personal at the time. I brought flowers for Valentine's day that year also.
