Adam Yauch Has Died

Adam Yauch, one-third of the pioneering hip-hop group the Beastie Boys, has died at the age of 47. Yauch, also known as MCA, had been in treatment for cancer since 2009. The rapper was diagnosed in 2009 after discovering a tumor in his salivary gland.

My favorite Beastie Boys song.

  3. I wasn't a huge mega-fan but I liked them a lot. Fight for your Right was huge when I was in grade 9 and Ill Communication reminds me of second year university. For my generation, this is big.

  4. Man so sad I went to see them way back in 86 they were on the def jam summer tour, 1st rap show I ever went to and wow!!!!!

  6. I must just be of the wrong generation, and I hope this doesn't come across as insensitive to his friends and fans, but I don't remember this guy being a force in the music industry. I remember one dopey song, You've Got To Fight, and oh was't that funny, young Jewish guys pretending to be rappers. That's all the impact he had on me. I feel mystified and out of sync, looking at all these heartfelt tributes on the Internetz. Nothing unusual, so everyone carry on....

  8. Mcspanky, understood. I loved Dick Clark, enjoyed Michael and Whitney, but noone made me feel the need to post on FB til Adam. These guys had a few great songs that are still played quite regularly at times. Party Anthems of my generation. While he was only 1yr younger than Whitney, his death hit me a lot harder - Perhaps because he wasn't a train wreck, and died of a cancer that is supposedly curable. Makes me realize that while I still pass for my twenties, I am in the next decade, and death is a lot closer than I realized...

  9. I never cared for The BB's but know someone who photographed them occasionally and he said they were all truly nice guys. My heart goes out to his friends, family and fans. May he rest in peace.

  10. Whitney's death meant nothing to me so I didn't bother commenting on the tribute post. Same for Dick Clark. I was sad but I definitely wasn't going to post on the tribute post that I questioned people's feelings.

  11. McSpanky, BB were inducted into the Rock & Roll hall of fame this year, making them the third hip-hop group ever to be. The other two were Run DMC and Grandmaster Flash.

They also had the first rap album to go to number one on the billboard charts.

  12. Not only did the Beastie Boys help bring rap music to the mainstream, they also changed the whole game with their sampling on Paul's Boutique, which was named by Rolling Stone as number 156 of the 500 greatest albums ever. To me it should have been a lot higher. They were and always will be my favorite band and I am lucky enough to have seen them live multiple times over. RIP Adam "MCA" Yauch. You will be missed.

  14. And while Licensed to Ill is probably their most well known album, their later stuff is just incredible in the scope of the music the music they sampled and in the originality and humor of their lyrics. Very influential. Beyond that, they really became active in humanitarian causes, MCA especially. They were a lot more than their original image as stupid frat boy white rappers.

  15. Paul's Boutique is a massively underrated record and this news just sucks. Fuck Cancer is all I can say.

  16. I totally agree, Stanley Roper.

  17. I feel for you kids of the 80's. This is how I felt when Joey Ramone died of cancer 12 years ago. RIP Adam.

  18. "Sabotage" is pretty much the best video ever. Ever.

I used to listen to "Check Your Head" ALL the time. "Paul's Boutique" also was a really good album.

    This just seems incomprehensible.

  19. Like I said yesterday in another thread.......Run DMC/Beastie Boys was my very first concert at 15 years old and I worshipped them. Played Licsense To Ill over and over and over. This makes me so so sad. R.I.P. MCA

  20. @Reno, yesterday I was listening to AltNation and they had people calling in to talk about their experiences, etc. One woman said she saw that show in Arizona and it made me realize I really have to get started on building my time machine. I wouldn't use it for evil or gain, just to see concerts. I'd go back and see that.

  23. Pauls Boutique is one of the greatest albums of all time. The Beastie Boys with the Dust Brothers changed everything with that album. You could never get away with doing that with all of those samples on an album now. That was my favorite Beastie album. This is very upsetting about MCA.

  24. MCA was an awesome man who cared about humanity. He actually took time out with his fans. I was front row at a Beastie concert in 94 and we were making some serious eye contact. Not like 'ooh baby' eye contact, but he kept looking at me like WTF are you doing you are going to get yourself killed front row of a mosh pit. His eyes told the future, and I did get hurt. He wrote me, I still have the postcard, called me, and sent me tix and backstage passes to teh next show. I went, & unfortunately didn't meet him, but I'm pretty sure he was looking for me. This is another long story. When I can find all the pics I am goign to post the entire story on my blog. RIP Adam Yauch. Here is a link to the postcard he sent me:

  25. @Lazyday: ITA. Loved the Ramones and Joey's passing was the end of an era. If you haven't seen the movie "End of the Century " then do. Heartbreaking is all I can add to that.

  26. @ Sherry - holy crap, that movie tore my heart out. My kids love the Ramones, but it took me a long time after seeing that movie not to feel despondent when my boys were rocking out.

    1. Mine too. It was obvious that Johnny stole Joey's girl or so he thought and that broke his heart. Not to mention that they put their heart and soul into that music and were appreciated far too late to make a difference for their financial well being. I can only hope that Joey is looking down and seeing how many people loved him.

  30. Amanda, soundtrack to so many parts of my life, exactly what I said yesterday. The beasties are everything to me and so many of our generation.
MCA, get on the mike my man...fuck you cancer.

  36. I hardly ever comment in the tribute posts because the frog in my throat affects my fingers as well. Just reading some of the lyrics you have all posted makes a salty discharge in my eyes. Last time I felt like this on loosing someone I never personally met was when Johnny Cash passed away.

    RIP MCA

  37. The In Sound From Way Out! is the best Beastie Boys album ever-- and it's all instrumental!

That CD had the magical ability to put you in a mellow groove for the rest of the day or calm you down if you were stuck in traffic-- simultaneously!

    Rest In Peace, Nathaniel Hornblower.

  38. Ad Roc down with the Ione. Listen to the shit cause both of them is boney. Gotta do it like this like Chachi and Joanie cause she's the cheese and I'm the macaroni.

That's my fav line ever from my most fav Beasties' song ever.

    RIP, MCA.

I agree, Whitney and Michael J had more fame, fortune and pop culture accolades, but the Beastie Boys have my heart. Regretting tremendously that I never saw them live.

  40. I hadn't heard the news yet, but was wondering why I was hearing so much Beastie Boys on the radio driving home. This made me so sad. He was too young. RIP.

  41. Gone way too soon... and ironically the healthiest Beastie of them all. Definitely the end of an era big time for me.

My man MCA's got a beard like a billy goat (whoop whoop)- MCA- get on the mic my man- forever

Still so sad about this RIP Adam.

  42. Dear McSpanky,
Beastie Boys brought Rap,techno and house into white urban & suburban homes for Millions of teenagers in America. Across three decades. Pretty amazing for someone who passed away at the tender age of 47. For me Adam is my generation's Michael Jackson. Is been three days and I miss him already. His contribution to film was outstanding for someone who seemed me starting out in that genre. I am pretty blown away by his outsized talent.I hope you check out his past work.

  43. So sad about this. They didn't seem to get crazy stalky fans but a solid respect with each genuinely new album.
