Woman Steals $42M - Gets Six Years In Jail

A woman in New York has been convicted of stealing $42M from union pension accounts. She stole the $42M over the course of 7 years and lived an incredible lifestyle while spending the life savings of the union workers. The thing is even though she tole $42M she was only sentenced to six years in jail. That was the maximum she could get. So, she will be out in a couple of years but I don't know if it is worth it. She will be about 63 when she gets out of jail; will owe a bunch of money; have no realistic job prospects; and have a great deal of her life still to live. So, even though it is just a six year sentence, it really seems like it is for the rest of her life if you look at what awaits her after jail. I really hope she enjoyed the last seven years because the rest of her life doesn't look so good.

  1. And yet, if a mother stole $42 for food for her kids, she'd get 60 years.

  5. Money isn't everything. She'll be collecting Social Security shortly after she's released, and I think that's judgment proof income. There are lots of ways to live well on the cheap.

  6. She must have been friends with the women who stole 10 million from her auto dealership job in the span of 7 years to give her family and herself the ultimate life of luxury and she got I believe 5 years in jail.

  7. Plus karma is going to fuck her up for stealing the retirement funds of others. While she probably faked working and doped off all the damn day. Have fun with that, beyotch.

  8. Andrew Fastow only got 5-6 years for his part in the Enron scandal. His wife only got a year or two.

    I prefer blueing myself. :)

  13. She steals $42M but can't buy a $70 pair of Spanx.

But seriously, what happens to the people she robbed blind?

  14. Anyone checking the offshore accounts of this woman? Malta? Dominica? Caymans? Hello?

7 years, less time served and time reduced for good behavior could amount to a slap on the wrist.

This is ridiculous. If people don't pay every penny of their taxes, they get put away for decades. But if you steal from a private source, it's basically a slap on the wrist. What makes stealing from the government worse than stealing from people?

I think the Son of Sam law will prevent her from profiting (further) from her crimes.

  19. The Son of Sam law was struck down in NY in 1990 thanks to ole dead Henry Hill and Pillegi's book Wiseguys aka Goodfellas. It was revised in 2001. So it's not that black and white stopping her from profiting.

    from wiki-
"After numerous revisions, New York adopted a law in 2001, again known as the "Son of Sam" law.[1] This law requires that victims of crimes be notified whenever a person convicted of a crime receives $10,000 (US) or more—from virtually any source.[2] The law then attaches a springing statute of limitations, giving victims an extended period of time to sue the perpetrator of the crime in civil court for their crimes.[3] This law also authorizes a state agency, the Crime Victims' Board, to act on the victims' behalf in some limited circumstances.[4] Thus far, the current New York law has survived constitutional scrutiny."

  20. I have a question--Don't these people realize that eventually they'll GET CAUGHT? People doing Ponzi schemes, etc. Do they realize they can't do this forever and will eventually lose everything and go to jail (even if it's for a measly 6 years)? Is living the high life for a few years worth it? Humans confuse me sometimes.

  21. the small sentence is ridiculous. also ridiculous is the fact that there was no oversight in that pension plan, so that one lone sociopath could stead that much money over the course of seven years! insane!

  22. If she was smart enough to steal $42 million, she should be smart enough to have squirreled away some funds overseas should she get caught.

Now, if she was just an idiot who got lucky to steal that amount and lived every day like it was her last, then perhaps her life will be crap when she's released.

  23. Agreed with Evil Kumquat. 42 million does not simply disappear.

I imagine she'll be doing just fine for herself when she comes back.

Plus 42 million dollars over 13 years (7 of theft, 6 of jail)? Pfft, I'd make that deal.

  24. @Jemtastic - Seriously. She should really have invested in some bras too.

Stories like these make me want to punch things. I'm just going to focus on making fun of her inability to corral her body jowls.

  25. Longtime lurker, first time commentator here.

I know what I'm going to see won't please everybody but this story is just another proof that we live in countries with an institutional racist system.

Brown folks don't get away with such crimes, especially stealing.

No wonder Jails are not a melting pot! :-(
