I am so sad now, he was always hilarious and not given enough credit. Both on Amen and The Jeffersons he was a riot. RIP SH
ReplyDeleteI always thought he was older. I agree, ge didn't get enough credit. May he rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteThat sucks, I was actually thinking about him a couple of weeks ago, wondering if he was alive or not as I hadn't heard about him in awhile. As a couch potato kid I watched shitloads of Jeffersons reruns and I loved me some Amen. Hemsley was funny as fuck. R.I.P.!

wtf?? People are dropping like flies. Prince has got to be scared as hell.
ReplyDeleteRIP Mr. Hemsley aka George
Love, love, love him!
ReplyDeleteSo many talented folks dying.
I will be heartbroken when Mel Brooks passes.
Sherman 'has moved on up'. RIP
ReplyDeleteTalk about movin' on up! RIP Mr. Jefferson
ReplyDelete:(
ReplyDeleteI thought he was older also.
Sherman Hemsley gave us so many hours of entertainment. I loved "The Jeffersons", and "Amen"! I'm glad everyone else mentioned "Amen" too! Like Mr. Hemsley, that show never really got its due.
ReplyDeleteAnyone else remember the Amen episode where Sherman ended up naked, somehow, in court? I cried I laughed so hard! It's fitting that he & Carroll O'Conner were the best curmudgeons on television, ever!
RIP, fella. Thank you so much for all the laughs.
BOO. This sucks. :(
ReplyDeleteHe joins Isabel Sanford, Roxie Roker and Franklin Cover in the de-luxe apartment in the skyyyyyy.
ReplyDeleteGodspeed Sherman.
RIP George Jefferson
ReplyDeleteSad news, I loved his shows. RIP Mr. Hemsley.
ReplyDeleteThe Jeffersons is a classic and Amen is very underrated. Did it ever come out on DVD?
ReplyDeleteRIP, Sherman. I may just try to do the George Jefferson dance in your honor.
Hope he's movin' on up, to that deluxe apartment in the sky!
ReplyDeleteRIP Sherman, George Jefferson was tha awesomest. I loved that tv show as a kid and it was mainly due to your sweet face and stellar character.
First astronaut Sally dying at age 61 and now Sherman at age 74?! What the eff is up with these ppl dying relatively young? I thought the average life span in America was like 78 or 79 or something. How dare death steal all our human treasures aware like this. wahhh
RIP. You will be missed.
ReplyDeleteI just loved him. I was like Ingrid - a couch potato kid who's seen 'em all, and I loved me some George and Weezy.
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know why he made his home in El Paso, TX? I've been to El Paso, and well, it's not the garden spot of the state.
RIP. you brought many of us a lot of joy.
He had a very funny loveable angry face. The perfect actor for all those tantrums, up to his neck with the ratchetness -- he was really great. RIP
ReplyDeleteRIP, Sherman. I loved The Jeffersons, never heard of Amen. I wonder if it's online somewhere.
ReplyDeleteHe finally got a piece of the pie....

ReplyDeleteSo sad. RIP Mr. Hemsley. Gone too soon.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the years of laughter. Rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteLibby, what a great memory--Hemlsey and Carroll O'Connor, curmudgeons extraordinaire. Good one!
ReplyDeleteThanks for all of the laughs. You will be dearly missed!
ReplyDeleteNow he's moving on up FROM the east side to the real "delux apartment in the sky."
ReplyDeleteis there anyone between the ages of say 30-60 who has not seen his work?

I was just walking home and overheard one white guy say to another how he was called a racial slur, and I wondered if someone called him "honky". Then I thought we weren't living in 70s-era "Jeffersons" times. RIP, Sherman! Thanks for the laughs.
ReplyDeleteRip Sherman.
ReplyDeleteI was just thinking of "The Jefferson's" theme the other day - catchy tune, pictures of a deluxe apartment in the sky and The Swagger. When you're my age, you find the oddest things still stay with you. That was 37 years ago! "Amen" was a great show, too. RIP Mr. Hemsley. You brought a lot of laughter to a lot of people.
ReplyDeleteI loved Amen and the Jeffersons. I remember watching Amen on NBC
ReplyDeleteI loved watching George and Weezy. It was a great show dealing with cultural issues, socioeconomic issues, and racial issues. I learned a lot and laughed a lot.
ReplyDeleteRIP Mr. Hemsley. That swagger just can't be beat!
Bless him
ReplyDeleteWeezie!!
ReplyDeleteRIP Sherman.
Hard to believe he's only 74. That means he was in his mid to late 30s when he started playing George on All in the Family. Always seemed older on TV.
As George he played SO much older than he was. I remember being shocked to hear that Isabel Sanford was like 20 years older than he! Maybe she looked younger too, but wow, they looked the same age.
ReplyDeleteYoutube has "George Jefferson Meets the KKK" online, for what it's worth. His face is so great.
ReplyDelete@Vicki Cupper - I feel the same way about Mel Brooks - he's one of the few I'd cheat on my husband with - even at his age. Every time I've seen him on TV he makes me laugh out loud - and he just seems like a nice guy!
ReplyDeleteAww, this one made me really sad. I remember watching him when I was a kid (on Amen?) & he was so funny. RIP, Sherman.
ReplyDeleteThe Jeffersons had the catchiest theme songs. God, I loved that show and Amen, too. Very talented man. May he rest in peace.
