The Goopster Sells A Plastic Tray For $300
Each week I find new ways to be amazed by Gwyneth Paltrow. This week, she is selling the plastic tray you see above for about $300. Yes, the tray, which looks like you could find it in target or Ross for $10 and probably will in the next few months she is selling for $300. You know you have way too much money when you are willing to spend $300 on a plastic tray. I think she thinks she can get away with it because it was designed by Alexandra von Furstenberg. It is the only thing I can think of. Now, for $300, you do get a fancy description that would make J. Peterman proud.
Alexandra von Furstenberg has made this special laser etched acrylic tray especially for goop. The “X Marks the Spot” design has a special luminosity that bounces right off the fluorescent pink surface. Use it as a vanity tray for perfume and cosmetics, take it to the office for an elegant display, or to the living room as a centerpiece; it makes a statement in any room.
It doesn't change the fact that it is plastic. It makes a statement alright. You have way more money than sense.
So don't buy it then.
ReplyDeleteThank you Enty. This puts everything in perspective. The whole world is crazy!
ReplyDeleteOh, Fishsticks...It is true-You have way more money than sense.
ReplyDeleteAcrylic is not ordinary plastic. Always more costly. Not just from GOOP but everywhere.
ReplyDelete... it's in Barbie pink ...
ReplyDeleteThat's true Aly, it'd be at least $9.99 at Walmart.
ReplyDeleteGwennie buy it for me!!
ReplyDeleteShe's known in my house as the worst thing in both iron man and the avengers. Stop showing up in my favorite movies arrrg!
ReplyDeleteAhhhh, Goop’s version of the Emperor’s new clothes. She really is completely stupid.
ReplyDeleteI agree Enty, the statement is that you have no taste, and that you're willing to spend a vulgar amount of money on a piece of crap plastic just to show the world that you have three hundred dollars to throw away. Sounds about right for Gwyneth. And I can't with that name! It's so pretentious. Gwyneth dahling! Would you mind sharing with the Von Furstenburgs your charming story about the St. Bart's debacle?
ReplyDeleteI actually really like this set, but there's no way it's worth $300. It's acrylic, not Waterford.
ReplyDeleteCall me when Target's selling the knock-off for $29.99.
Actually, if you click on the link, you can see the Xs on the tray. It's kind of cool, but definitely not worth $300. If I was in need for a tray, and it matched my decor, I'd spend $29.99 on it. It IS acrylic. ;)
ReplyDeleteBarf!
ReplyDeleteOh to live Goopy's life! LOL
ReplyDelete@dia is your icon the puppy from the sorry your grandmother is dead?
ReplyDeleteInstead of this crap, why doesnt she get involved with a charity or something?
ReplyDeleteShe is so unbearably pretentious. It is almost comical how serious she takes her superiority to us mere mortals. Kind of an Ann Romney, "you people" type. Can't stand her! And I agree, she ruined Iron Man and The Avengers. Bad, bad casting. Not that she can't act, it is just the negative baggage that she brings with her real life personality.
ReplyDeleteI'd buy it.
ReplyDeleteWhat?
Yeah okay, I wouldn't.
Sorry acrylic or not, it looks cheap. I'm constantly amazed at the amount people will spend on things, just so they can boast as to how much they obtained it for and from whom. All is says to me, is you a idgit for paying to advertise someones crap.
ReplyDeleteJ. Peterman, highlarious!
ReplyDeleteDon't laugh, I have Peterman's 'The American Baseball Jacket'. (gift)
ReplyDelete@Baka Neko - Oh No! I think it is. I just wanted a cute animal to cheer everyone up. I just googled for random pics. It looked like a sweet puppy with big brown eyes!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the heads up. I will change this...
Here is my actual puppy when he was very small...
ReplyDeletethis reminds me of an episode of Weeds when Nancy was selling dime bags of pot for $500 and saying it was from france.
ReplyDelete"There's a sucker born every minute"
J. Peterman. I see peterman busses all the time and think of Kramers reality bus tour.
ReplyDeleteAs for the acrylic. If it included the glass it would be understandable. Otherwise... What a waste. That is groceries for a week in my house. But if you got the money honey, do whatever you want.
Maybe she should cash in on the Urban Sombrero
ReplyDeleteI am anti Plastic.
ReplyDeleteI have a plastic tray in my living room with palm trees etched on it. I paid $12.00 for it at Home Goods. I wouldn't have paid a dime more.
ReplyDeleteJust the tray? Not the entire set?
ReplyDeleteIf people have money and want to spend it, it's good for the economy but every week Gwyneth out does herself on the pretentious asshole scale.
ReplyDeleteok, it's not that I want to defend Goopster... But the tray costs 270$ not 300$ :)
ReplyDeleteYes, the tray is *only* $270 and it has an X laser etched on it. Perfect for feeding the dog.
ReplyDeleteShe really does live on a different planet.
I just HAVE to have it!
ReplyDeleteAt what point in a designer's life do they become so mediocre that they have to start designing TRAYS?? Lmao
Lol@lostathome.
ReplyDelete... THAT TRAY IS BAD ASS.
ReplyDeleteI consider myself an afficionado of fine trays and have a good tray collection, and I have to say that's the most awesomest tray I've ever seen.
That tray can out tray most other trays with its trayfulness.
I'm buying 3!
God, how I hate this woman and everything she does.
ReplyDeleteSpecially luminous.
Yup, it sure is.
Is there any word how Gwyneth's retail endeavors are doing? Is this overpriced crap she is endorsing selling?
ReplyDeleteI work in retail and every time I read a news story about how bad the economy is and how people are hurting I think about all the unnecessary expensive crap our stores sell and I wonder where the money people spend is coming from.
Not that I'm not grateful to people who buy overpriced unnecessary crap...it pays my paycheck.
@Megerz
ReplyDeleteurban Sombrero
HAAAAAAAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA!
I actually think the tee she sells on Goop is pretty cute. Of course, I could go to Target, buy a woman's scoop neck tee and strategically add some cording myself and have the same thing...for about 80% less.
ReplyDeleteAlso...
ReplyDeleteThat tray looks like some of the stuff Izaac Mizrahi was designing for Target a few years ago. I bet it would have sold for about $30 to $40, tops.
I guess I'm one of the unwashed masses, because that looks like a plastic tray you'd find in the seasonal aisle at Rite Aid next to the flip flops. I wouldn't pay $3 for it, but I'm cheap.
ReplyDeleteMrWolf, you cracked me up, sir.
ReplyDeleteMadLyb, I'm cheap, too :-).
In eighth grade industrial arts, we took acrylic, heated it, and made swizzle sticks. Then we took acrylic, heated it up, and made trays. You mean I could have sold that stuff?!
ReplyDelete@Mr Wolf
ReplyDeleteFrufa and I are clearly your target audience. HILARIOUS!! Who doesn't love a BAD ASS TRAY?
all this is kind of silly. is it overpriced? Yes. Can you find a cheaper version? Yes. Is goop the first person / brand that sells overpriced stuff, NO.
ReplyDeletewhy do we need to critise her goop/products every.single.week?
as @anita_mark said, just dont buy it and move on.
Over-priced items sold to people with money burning a hole through their pockets? Sounds like a profitable business model to me. Wish I had the acumen and resources to do this.
ReplyDeleteif you think you can reproduce this tray and sell it for $9.99 why don't' you just do it, move on, and stop bitching about it? The fact is, is that there are different grades of acrylic/plastic just as there are different grades of metals and fabrics. They're not all the same. If you knew anything about how to make high grade, cell cast, acrylic, you would know that it's not easy nor is it cheap. In fact, in 1" thick or more, it's bullet proof and many banks and post offices, and even military planes use acrylic for this, for that reason.
ReplyDeleteBefore knocking it, you should probably figure out you're talking about first.
Honestly, I love the design but agree--acrylic is nothing but plastic....it's basically taking plexiglass you can buy on the Net for pennies and putting it in tray form.
ReplyDeleteI really only fault GP for thinking Von Furstenburg's name is worth the same mark-up as say, Kanye West---slap his name on some sneakers and you're talking 500% mark-up. AVF, not so much.
Agree Shaymus, but there is no way this tray was made of high-grade acrylic, and it certainly is not cell cast which is often only used for aquariums and such.
ReplyDeleteThis is pure plastic plain and simple.
They made fun of this and the $240 Turkish Towels on TMZ the other day. I think most Goop subscribers are there for the laughs, not the goods.
