Mariah Carey Is Not Happy - Is America Racist?

That screaming you heard yesterday was Mariah Carey yelling at Nick Cannon and then every person who came within five feet of her. Agents and managers were summoned and Mariah is thisclose to backing out of her American Idol deal. If Nicki Minaj joins American Idol then you are going to see Mariah have a serious vocal cord issue which will cost her the ability to speak. Mariah doesn't want anyone younger or more diva-ish than her. Mariah also was told that she would be the only woman on the panel. When I first heard the news that Nicki was going to be a judge, I didn't believe it and I will tell you why. Because executives at networks think America is racist. There I said it. No one else might say it, but I am saying it. Randy Jackson is black. Nicki Minaj is black and Mariah Carey is considered black by many people, especially considering she is married to a black man. I guarantee you the first question executives asked when someone brought up the name Nicki Minaj is something about how can we have three black people judging white people on national television. I know they did. I welcome three judges of color, whatever color they might be. It is time to bust the stereotypes. Do you know that until about ten years ago, you would never hear two women back to back on the radio? Yep. Think about all the other shows with judges and tell me how many have judges who are all of color. No other show. It just is not done. If the show crashes and burns, the executives will blame it on the racial composition of the judges. They will not consider that perhaps Mariah and Nicki was not the best combination and will not get along for even one second. I also don't understand why everyone thinks Randy wants to leave. Would you ever want to leave a job that paid that much for so little work? So why would Randy?

  1. I'd rather have Mariah. She's actually talented. Nikki Minaj should be dropped on Sentinel Island.

  2. You couldn't pay me enough to spend 5 minutes with either of those bitches.

  3. I was disturbed by this news, because Nicki has yet to prove herself as having ANY taste whatsoever, or long-term success like Mariah. Plus, isn't she more of a rapper? Are they going to have rappers on the show now? (Of course not, right?)

I forgot about the 'racial' component. I agree that the suits will look for any excuse, but I wish we could all get over the inevitable diversification of America.

  4. The executives are right about America. Especially for a show like Idol which is now dominated by midwestern and southern viewers (take a look at the last few winners).

People in Kansas, Missouri, Tennessee, and Alabama won't like the judge makeup if it's Randy, Mariah, and Nicki.

  5. Ugh. Right, Vicki? You can't possibly NEED anyone other than Mariah. She's actually a legit talent, she's been around forever, and she knows how to play the role. Who is going to be a better mentor, and a better diva?

  6. My first thought about Nicki Minaj wasn't about her being black. I was more concerned that I've never heard her utter a coherent sentence.

  8. Minaj is an awful awful choice for a judge. I don't mind Mariah cause she is unintenionally hilarious on live tv. That being said, I still will not watch this train wreck.

  9. I would NOT like to have our children exposed to Nikki any more than they already have been. UGH.

  10. They should hire Betty White.

  11. If she doesn't want to work with another pop star, she shouldn't have to. I don't see why her objection would be wrong. I wouldn't want to be on a panel with Minaj.

  12. Okay, so I am a metal girl at heart..I don't like Mariah or Nicki's music, but Mariah DESERVES the judge spot. She's been around forever, and even though her voice is a little squirrely these days, back in the day the girl could SANG! As for Nicki, she's been around for what, like two years?! And I've heard more about her booty implants than her music. Totally not deserving of a judge spot, IMO. Okay, off to get my umpteenth latte of the morning :)

  13. Doesn't Nicki Minaj have other things to do? I dont think its very likely that she would accept even if asked.

  14. I thought that people with talent should judge talent competitions?
Aretha or Diana Ross would be better than these 2, especially Minaj, if they are looking for diversity on the panel.

Bring back Steven T! Love him!

  15. I don't think a panel of 3 white judges would be a great idea either. Or 3 Hispanic judges. Or 3 women. Or 3 men. It's a diverse country, it's a diverse audience, get a diverse panel in there. Not rocket science.

  16. They could have all black, all white or even all purple judges on American Idol for all I care. When all 3 were announced, I didn't even think about the color of their skin, just that their judge choices are moronic. I'm not watching this show no matter who the judges are. The show has become a complete circus. Nicki Manaj? Seriously? What a joke. Mariah is at least talented and has earned a spot. Nicki though? joke.

  17. Nicki would be an obvious desperate move for AI to stay relevant. I personally cannot bear to watch her for more than a nanosecind. She's a hack and her 15 minutes ought to be up soon

    ReplyDelete
  18. I couldn't care less what color the judges are, but Nicki Minaj is TERRIBLE in every way. I would never watch a show that gives her the ability to critique other people, when she herself sorely needs the critiquing. Ugh.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 'mariah Carey is considered black because she is married to a black man'? Who is writing this shit?! Mariah is biracial with a black-Hispanic father. Somebody get the real enty back. ASAP.

  20. Yes, Mariah is TOTALLY legitimately talented for 100% sure. Minaj is a waste of space and Betty White would be an awesome addition.

However, I would be more than happy to spend five minutes with these tricks for cash because that would be a fascinating five minutes. :)

  21. They need a combination of judges that will create fireworks, not a nuclear implosion.

  22. Mariah Carey is considered black bc she is black!!! Her dad is black and in America a drop of black means your ass is black!

    1. I don't know, I'm not sure who thinks like that. I don't perceive Mariah as black from her 25% or whatever it is.
We all have a drop if you could trace it.

  23. Can't stand Minaj. Her attitude sucks, she's dillusional, can't dress, and most importantly she sucks big chocolate salty balls. Seriously, she can't rap or belt out a song. If they want a black female rapper, there are way more that have paid their dues, have a loyal fan base, and are actually talented.

And on another note, WTF is up with her mouth/jaws? Every time she speaks she looks like she is talking through jaws wired shut.

  24. I heard Randy won't be a judge anymore, that he's being moved to a "mentoring" role. Whatever that means.

I don't care what the ethnicity of any of these judges. It's their own talent in whatever industry they're judging that should matter. THAT'S why I don't think Minaj is a good choice, she hasn't been around long enough and hasn't proven herself enough to be judging others.

I wish they'd choose people like Randy. People who have been in the business for years, paid their dues, but most of us don't know who the hell they are.

  25. I loathe Nicki Minaj, and the auto-tuned, talentless "singers" polluting our airwaves of which she is a premier member.

    ReplyDelete
  26. The shit that is passed off as talent these days. Nicki M. has ruined rap music. LONG LIVE CHUCK D. AND P.E!

    ReplyDelete
  27. ITA, Jennifer---As old as I am, I would love to see a proven hit-maker (singing, songwriting, and production-side) like Barry Gibb judge the talent. I know they won't go for someone that old, but someone who has talent, knows talent, and has that kind of hit-making experience.
They should choose a successful producer over a one-hit wonder any day!

    ReplyDelete
  28. I don't watch any of these singing shows but like her songs or not Mariah Carey is amazing. Nicki Minaj is not. I think she'll fade away fast. That is an insult and everyone knows Mariah is a diva. I don't even know why they'd try that.

Also, I think they'll worry abt the race thing and it prob won't happen, and I agree with the commenter who said a panel of all white judges would be a bad idea too because we live in a diverse country.

But I will admit when I was younger I didn't know for years Mariah Carey was biracial. I found out during a school celebration for black history month. We were in the auditorium and they were putting pictures up of famous black Americans and I asked my friend why she was up there. It doesnt matter at all, but i look back and just think its funny that kids don't really pick up on that kind of thing until it is pointed out.

  29. Isn't Nicki the one that has been the topic of some pretty nasty blinds? I mean nasty behavior, not the blinds themselves.

  30. I don't believe that Nicki Minaj would've been selected a a judge at all... I think that this is for show, to demonstrate how "Superbad" AI is for even considering an all-black panel. Then, when everybody starts howling about what a terrible choice she'd be, they have a justfiable out. It's just an experiment.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I have no quarrel w/Nicki myself, but they really ought to get someone w/a much longer track record in the music business, whether as a performer or a producer; not only do these people need to have enough background experience to judge the performers, but I daresay there's a certain amount of mentoring going on, and, again, you need experience to make that work. Barry Gibb probably would work very well, plus getting a white guy in there probably wouldn't be a bad idea due to the potential racism issues, alas. Plus, they really ought to get judges from a wider range of genres rather than just R&B or top-40 pop. MNSHO, of course...

  32. Nicki Minaj sucks. Lisa Left-Eye Lopez did the baby-talk rapping first and she did it better.

I think Rick Rubin would be great for AI. Or even Nile Rodgers ... someone who's been around for a long time, doesn't "need" the publicity, and knows their shit.

Ummm...mariah carey is considered black for the same reason minaj is. They are both bi-racial. Minaj is half Indian (as her last name suggests) and half Afro-Trinidadian.
It seems ignorant and questionable for someone with your supposed profession and intelligence to make that kind of comment-for one, and to not have facts straight.
As the parent of a bi-racial half indian child it seems strange to me that one person can be considered more or less of who they are, presumably based on stereotypes. Minaj surrounds herself with african americans and plays very heavily into stereotypes. So you say, she's black. Mariah, who is also bi-racial black gets thrown an off colored comment because she's MARRIED to a black man? She's half black. That's why she's considered that. Just like my daughter is considered indian or white depending on who looks at her.
I don't know why but this post irritated me, and I never comment!
Mariah is insanely talented, and smart. And actually kinda funny and sweet. She would obviously be a great judge of talent. Nicki Minaj is a joke, and a complete flash in the pan. Not talented at singing- talented at getting attention.
But the racial part made no sense they way it was stated. Who freaking cares what ethnicity or race they are? Or what people consider them??
One has long lasting talent and career. One is like a slu**y cartoon on crack!

  34. I'm WHAT delusional world is Nikki Minaj deserving of even being considered for this? Shit, if Randy had to deal with her for a few days, I'm sure he'd quit too. Huge bitch.

As far as the race thing goes, I don't see that as a problem with Randy and Mariah, but I'd see Nikki definitely judging based on race.

    ReplyDelete
  35. It's funny tho that Mariah Carey doesn't look at ALL black. I never would have thought her to be bi-racial if I hadn't heard her Dad was black.

I dunno though...no matter how she is perceived, I just don't think viewers would have a problem with an "all black" panel. Most of the viewers of AI are younger, and younger people are less racist overall.

Oh, and Nicki Minaj is just painfully annoying.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Anonymous8:41 AM

And to be clear, I do understand the racial component of picking three judges who are all presumably "black" etc.
My issue was just with the wording and rudeness about mariah being "considered" black especially because of her husband. Meanwhile stating minaj is black.
    Check facts!

  37. I must be odd--it never crossed my mind in any way what race the candidates were until I read it in the press.

I don't know much about Nicki but I think I'd rather see her be a judge than see a Jonas get it. They have not impressed me. I think I was expecting males to join Mariah--I didn't think she'd like another woman on the panel.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The judges' race is meaningless. I'm just disgusted they're hiring someone with a hookerish micro-career like Minaj. What are they thinking? Mariah has the clout and talent to be on the panel. I won't watch if Minaj is hired and I wouldn't blame Mariah at all if she backs out. She's completely right to be insulted.

  39. If you're saying America is too racist for non-white entertainers to thrive here, you need to pull your head out of your ass.

  41. @Phillip, that's not what was said. American Idol's audience is too racist to embrace 3 judges of color. Big difference.

Anyway, I thought Minaj was coming on as a guest performer or mentor but I could see how bringing her on to judge could boost Idol's "cool" factor and bring in a younger audience. Mariah is indeed talented but I wouldn't consider her to be hip or hot with Idol's target demographic. With their ratings slip last year, I imagine we'll see a lot of pandering to the under 25 set.

  42. Nicki's teeth are too big for her head. She looks like the T-Rex from Toy Story.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The best thing would be to have people who have actually had a) talent and b) a career in music..Regardless of race: Aretha? Hell yeah! Nile Rodgers: hell yeah! Trisha Yearwood, any other big country people (never listen and all the good ones have died you ask me).

Never heard Minaj but might just YouTube her to see what all the ick is about.

  44. OFFS. Now TMZ is reporting that Kanye may sign on as a judge. American Idol just needs to stop. They're just throwing shit out there to drum up publicity.

  45. 10 years ago? A radio station in Minneapolis changed their format a few months ago, and for the first month or two, only 1 song every hour or two was by a woman (yes, I kept track), and 1 in 2 of those was Adele. I kept bitching about it on their facebook page, and I'm guessing other people did too, because they've started playing more female artists.

Regardless of color, Nicki Minaj would be a disaster. She is not "edgy," she is an egomaniacal jackass. And I don't know how they could ever justify having a judge that lip-synced her guest performance on AI! She can rap, but she cannot sing for shit.

Not only does Randy get paid a fortune for little work, he also still obviously enjoys the job. I don't see any signs of burnout in him, although he desperately needs to expand his vocabulary.

  49. @FlirtyChick74 Timberlake's personality suits the show. He's great on SNL. imo, any AI Judge should hold some long-term continued success in the "record industry".
