John Cusack At A Peter Gabriel Concert
Not quite the Lloyd Dobler moment we were all looking for, but still, pretty damn close.

AWWWWWW that was awesome!!!!!!
I was there, it was dark and I was 3 sections back. Saw some guy walk out and hand PG a boom box, had no idea what was going on until PG introduced him. Was looking at Cusack as he walked off stage and missed PG holding the boom box over his head. Thanks to youtube I've been able to see it a few times from other angles. Really good show, saw PG at the LA Forum in 1986 with a friend. That same friend and I re-connected and went back to see him again 25 years later. :)
excellent pr move, not so excellent execution. #thinkitthroughnexttime
I've never seen a concert at the Hollywood Bowl and love Peter Gabriel. This must have been an awesome show.
More importantly, did his face look any different???? I've been waiting to get a chance to see Cusak for a while. Wasn't he the most popular guess for the blind item about the actor who's been hiding out because of bad plastic surgery?
Elizabeth, it was kind of an odd show. The musicians and PG are impeccable performers, but the stage seemed small and sometimes I felt like the tracks that were laid down for the light stands got in the way. Hard to believe he's 60 something years old though, he was still trying to dance around almost as much as he used to. And he still has an awesome, distinctive voice. :)
Pookie, it was kind of a spur of the moment thing, apparently because Cameron Crowe asked John to do it. Tony Levin, the bass player, has a blog and he takes photos from the stage during the concert. He said he was surprised by John's appearance, no one told him it was coming. Here's the link: http://www.papabear.com/tours/pg12/pg12_20.htm
And John's twitter, he was posting photos from side stage during the concert:

FS it did look crowded up there but it sounded great. I like PG's songs with an African influence, they use them a good bit in movie soundtracks. Did he play the song from Wall-E? Love that song. It should have won the Oscar.
I watched this last night. That song gives me chills.
What a wonderful concert! It was recorded, so I can't wait to buy it!
That song very nearly didn't make it into the movie. Cameron Crowe REALLY wanted it - sent the tape of the movie to Peter Gabriel - who was also sent a tape of another movie - a more raunchy 80's movie that also wanted to use his song. Peter watched the raunchy one - when Cameron called Peter back, Peter said NO to the use of the song saying that he felt the movie wasn't appropriate for his song. Cameron didn't realize that Peter had watched a different movie. I believe John Cusack had to straighten it up - then Peter allowed the song to be used.
Here's an SNL parody of the boom box scene:

The real scene from the movie.

Love that song and Peter Gabriel is great live! Saw him in the early 90's.
Lloyd, Lloyd all null and void! (Best line in the movie, just had to post it!)
john cusak holding that boom box outside of that home. is his back acting to date.
