I Watched American Idol
So, I decided to watch my regular shows on DVR and sat down to watch American Idol last night just so I could see how this feud played out during auditions. Here is what I wrote down on the back of a subscription card. When Mariah Carey is nice to someone, Nicki tries to be nicer. If Mariah cries, Nicki gives hugs. Keith Urban is way too nice to everyone and he is the antithesis of Tom Cruise. Randy looks like he is feeling left out, but sometimes I get the feeling that at this point he is just happy to be cashing a paycheck. I'm pretty sure Mariah has Mean Girls memorized and if you want to get on her good side that might be a way for future contestants to make their impression. You can say Mariah is your hero and really that is a very good idea, just DON'T say that you were watching her from when you were 3. Make her feel good, but not old. Mariah can be rude while being extremely friendly about it and I think Nicki is scared of her and is glad Mariah can't whisper in her ear.
American Idol is fake. And lame.
ReplyDelete*yawn*
ReplyDeleteI have never watched AI. I did last night cause I love Keith Urban. So sad he went this route, wish he could be on The Voice instead. Keith is a very sweet and humble guy, have had the honor to meet him a few times and love him more every time I do.
ReplyDeleteGot tired of the bitchfest going on between the 2 gals. Thank goodness for the DVR.
Nicki gave some surprisingly good advice. Keith did not have a chance to say anything in between the two women!
ReplyDeleteAnd a mute button!
ReplyDelete"Nicki, stop trying to make 'fetch' happen!!"
ReplyDeleteYeah, didn't the movie Clueless circa 1995 try the word fetch too? Not original, and didn't work then either.
DeleteI watched some of it and you left out that Nicki.called Mariah a bitch like in the first 5 minutes. Granted Mimi was pushing her buttons by making fun of that awful hat she wasn't even wearing but just had laying in front of her. All in all it was a snooze. The live shows are hopefully better.
ReplyDeletedo.not.care. about these bozo's.
ReplyDeleteI completely disagree with Enty's comment that Nicki is scared of Mariah. I completely saw that Nicki owns this show and Mariah was (yawn) dull, had little to say and seemed awkward in Nicki's shadow. Nicki clearly came out as the star of the show IMO
ReplyDelete"antithesis of Tom Cruise" is a really really good thing.
ReplyDeleteI think it's been a fascinating show, but encouraging drama between judges is a bad idea, in my opinion. It has turned into a circus.
ReplyDeleteWhile it's nice for a musician to receive any sort of a normal paycheck instead of going job to job, I think that Randy Jackson can work as much or as little as he wants in the recording industry.
It's an interesting show, I think the more interesting out of all the talent shows.
ReplyDeletewe watch the same show Enty I thought Nicky was trying to monopolize the show and I could see why Mariah was a bit annoyed though trying to keep her cool
ReplyDeleteSeems like the show is becoming more and more about the judges than the contestants. Perhaps a rename is due? Maybe "Former American Idols Judge & Fight." Or "Randy Jackson's Sit Back & Laugh" show.
ReplyDeleteMinji is coarse and crude. Period. She needs to drop the gangsta act if she wants to have a multifaceted career.
ReplyDeleteI dont know how someone that looks like rainbow bright can be seen as gansta! Lol
ReplyDeleteI watched. I'm not a fan of the Minaj persona, too much crap going on that has nothing to do with music, same goes for Gaga, and Madonna for that matter. If you're talented I'll listen. She can come across as caringly sweet, which was a surprise.
ReplyDeleteI thought Mariah was quite restrained, but Nicki probably got an earful during breaks. Mariah does love hearing she is adored.
I'd prefer to hear more musical comments from her though.
Randy at least has the courage to just say "It was bad man, singing is not your thing". He's the glue that reminds us it is Idol.
Keith had some good comments and will grow into this as the season progresses. I like that he addressed tone, and range and the small nuance's in voice quality. I think they should all give advice and encouragement to the ones who are almost there.
Nicki is an attention stealer. She doesn't stop talking...and acts like her opinion is the most important, but she does have a lot of "right on" things to say. I think she's a good judge though, and completely disagree that she's scared of Mariah. I didn't see that at all. She actually kept needling Mariah the total Diva.
ReplyDeleteMariah is there and is constantly hating on Nicki. It seems like everytime Nicki opens her mouth (which is all the time) Mariah rolls her eyes or makes a comment under her breath. Nicki is just having a personality, and Mariah is jealous that she's stealing the attention. Mariah is also constantly on defense. When Nicki said "Your voice is higher than Mariah's"...Mariah got annoyed. I thought that was a hysterical comment.
I think it's funny that Keith U. said "I felt like a scratching post between the 2 of you."
I thought Keith was kind of meh...really nice but I wasn't real excited about his comments.
ReplyDeleteI think Mariah is holding it all in--she seems to be measuring her comments VERY carefully so far. She wants to come out the winner in all the conflicts so I think she is being very controlled with what she says to the other judges and the contestants. I would imagine she expects to have a lot of contestants tell her that she is their idol.
Nikki is really pretty annoying but not as bad as I thought she'd be--but I think she will get on my nerves by the end.
Randy? he's Randy. Dawg....You're going to Hollywood!!!!
It's interesting the way nobody's said a word about the contestants, beyond what the judges said to them.
ReplyDeleteI'm not picking on you guys, I'm picking on the show and the fact that it's only about the judges so far. Sure, they did featurettes on a few contestants, but the show kinda treated them in general like an afterthought.
I think the judges are overshadowing the contestants. So far, I've only heard one or two contestants that are good, not great...none have blown me away.
ReplyDeleteI really couldn't believe when I read Enty's comments. I work work with children who have severe behavioral issues all day, and Enty hit the nail right on the head. As I was watching I saw all the same attention seeking behaviors from Nicki that I see from my students. The only difference is my students range from 8-9 years old. Pay close attention and you'll see that every time some one pays Mariah a compliment or says they're a fan, Nicki's eyes shoot daggers. She's clearly very jealous of all the attention Mariah seems to be getting. Not sure what she was expecting, as this is a singing competition and Mariah is one of the most successful and talented singers ever. Nicki is an over auto-tuned, flash-in-the-pan rapper.
ReplyDeleteYou totally hit the nail on the head with your comments. It is so transparent in the way Nicki Minaj acts. It's making it very difficult to watch.
DeleteNicki Minaj comes across as the love child of Fran Drescher's nanny and John Leguizamo's drag queen character in "Too Wong Foo..." and Mimi doesn't for a second buy anything nice directed at her out of Nicki's mouth.
ReplyDeleteYou know there's a lot of edited-out cattiness because this level is the best they could edit it up to.
Do you think Keith Urban goes home to Nicole and says "If I ever said you were a diva or a drama queen when we were fighting? I'm sorry. I know what that really is now"?
Edit for too/to slip. "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar" deserves the correct spelling.

ReplyDeleteThat's not something we can completely trust, seeing Nicki shooting eyeball daggers when Mariah gets a compliment. I believe the producers want to fuel the fires to drive up ratings, and they may be editing those daggers in to appear that way.
I'm not saying there's no animosity, but it's not "American Idol" at this point, it's the "Mariah vs. Nicki" show. The only ones I believe are when both are onscreen at the same time, no cutting to Nicki. And when they go live.
It's just cheap. Cheap and underhanded, and I wish they'd take a minute to remember it's about finding a NEW person, not about a diva catfight.
@Zeeky, I think that train left the station a long time ago. It's ALL about the judges now.
ReplyDeleteReality TV started out as putting "normal" people (yes, those quotes were intentional) in the spotlight, then the reality celeb thing took off, and now non-reality celebs are back in the game.
Doesn't it feel like taking freshman Shakespeare again? "Cast not the light on Minaj, she who doth tread the path of dagger glares!"
I watched it for the first time. It sounds like Nikki is constantly being sarcastic and bitchy to the contestants.
ReplyDeleteI feel bad for the contestants... every time one goes on, Mariah and Nikki fight, and they just stand there like "uhh this is awkward....."
ReplyDelete@ Zeeky: You're absolutely right about editing, it's always in play. There is no such thing as "reality" in any of these shows. However, from what I've heard and read over the past few months, people who work on the show have said from day 1 Nicki has been a nightmare to work with while Mariah has been a pleasure, very gracious to the staff, etc. Nicki has been rude and demanding. And it's very clear Nicki is trying to monopolize the panel and is doing anything she can to get attention. While I'm sure editing is definitely a big part, where there's smoke, there's fire. And there were a few scenes last night where they were in the same frame and Nicki looked like she wanted to explode when Mariah was given a compliment or whatever. Not like they cut to Nicki after. Can't edit that stuff.
