Your Turn
I think I did this about a year ago, but it is always fun to revisit it with new readers coming in all the time. First record, or album or tape you bought. Do you still have it? If you switched from vinyl to CD, did you but it again on CD?
TLC crazy sexy cool was my first CD. Too many tapes to remember!
ReplyDeleteDavid Lee Roth- Eat em and Smile
ReplyDelete1st record was toni basil mickey.I used my allowance to buy the 45 at kmart.
ReplyDelete1st record was toni basil mickey.I used my allowance to buy the 45 at kmart.
ReplyDeleteShaun Cassidy, da do Ron Ron. And no, I don't have it anymore. I am tempted to go get it from iTunes
ReplyDeleteRun DMC - Raisin Hell
ReplyDeleteMichael Jackson Thriller on Vinyl. It is still in my aunts garage.
ReplyDeleteDon't remember the first tape I bought, but the first CD was Mariah Carey "Emotions" in 1991. I don't think I have it anymore. I do re-buy albums in MP3 format if the CD is scratched.
ReplyDeleteI'm the worst with movies though. Every VHS that I've owned, I have since bought on DVD, and now am buying on Blu Ray. I remember Rob Zombie saying that he has pretty much every horror movie ever made on beta, VHS, laserdisc, DVD, and now blu ray. That's totally me!
First album I owned Tina Arena. I actually think it was called Don't Ask
ReplyDeleteI don't remember the first but I do remember I had the Beatles' "Blue Album" on the vinyl blue record which was one of my firsts I bought when I was 12 or 13! It was sadly destroyed though when we had the house fire 17 YRS ago but would be a collector's item today.
ReplyDeletePaula Abdul Forever Your Girl. Followed closely by Vanilla Ice. Yeah, I was awesome.
ReplyDeleteMichael Jackson's Bad on tape in 1987. Found it in my childhood bedroom last Christmas!
ReplyDeleteMy first vynil I had was "Xou da Xuxa 1". Well... what can I say, it was a brazilian singer and tv host for kids, lol
ReplyDeleteMy first CD was from a brazilian band to, I think I was 12, or 13...
@white lily, I had that one too! I loved Xuxa! She was huge in Puerto Rico where I'm from.
DeleteSeasons in the Sun (1974!) by Terry Jacks. Got the 45 at KMart. It was sold out for weeks.
ReplyDeleteMy first tape was either Wilson Phillips or New Kids on the Block, but first CD was Jimi Hendrix 'borrowed' from my dad. I am all vinyl now, and def didn't buy the first two again. However, I just scored the Hendrix LP on vinyl for $5.99 last Friday. Score!
ReplyDeleteBought a 45- dion's the runaway. I was 12. I know, dating self, lol
ReplyDeleteI don't remember ever not having records, but shaun's Da Do Ron Ron sticks out. Also Rick Springfield. My family was huge into music, so it was always playing. My parents oldies, and my bigbro and sis' rock.
ReplyDeleteMy first was C&C Music Factory "Gonna Make You Sweat" on cassette. I bought it when I was 10 after saving up some lunch money. I don't have it but I'm pretty sure it's still at my parent's pad.
ReplyDeleteThe 45 of I Think I Love You, Partridge Family. I no longer have it.
ReplyDeleteEither The Monkees or The Beatles 45. Yay to all of us old ones!
ReplyDeleteVinyl, Aladdin Sane, bought it with my 10th birthday money. It had already been out for a few years but I loved it and had to have my own copy. Precocious, me? Never!
ReplyDeleteI don't remember the first tape that I bought, but the first one I owned was Crystal Gayle's All-Time Greatest Hits. I still have it, it's still my favorite, and I have a ton of her CDs now. She's my all-time fave. When I was little, I wanted to grow my hair to my ankles just like her.
ReplyDeleteI had other before, but the first one I really remember buying is the soundtrack to Footloose and a Sony Walkman with my birthday money.
ReplyDeleteRevolver by the Beatles. Great then, great now.
ReplyDeleteWe had lots and lots of kids' books that came with a 45 that read the story to you - you know the ones: "You'll know it's time to turn the page when Tinkerbell rings her little bell like this."
ReplyDeleteBut the first real album I remember was the Grease double album - man, my brother and I wore that thing out!
Omg, @frufra, the grease double album was my jam! We made up dances to like every song on that thing, I loved it so much!
DeleteI so vividly remember my brother and his dance to Greased Lightnin'. And I saw that scene not too long ago, and realized that the lyrics to that song are filthy - bwahaha! No wonder our love of Grease made my mom nervous!
DeleteI had Grease too! I had no idea how filthy Greased Lightening or lots of the others were until I listened to them again as a grown up. Love that album. I knew all the words, or thought I did, I don't think I called it a p**y wagon. I also had the Go-Go's Vacation, I got it as a CD as well later on.
DeleteFirst CD - Material Issue. Goodness I loved them!
ReplyDelete@Jessi - YES! Freak City Soundtrack is one of my happy places.
DeleteSingle: De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da by the Police. Still have it and the digital version, too.
ReplyDeleteMy first tape was Cinderella (the metal band). My grandparents got it for me!
ReplyDeleteFirst record I ever bought was Duran Duran's Rio. I still have it on vinyl and did eventually get it on CD as well. John Taylor is my soul mate.
ReplyDelete'Synchronicity', by the Police. Still have a copy, albeit in the Complete Recordings box set. Still holds up as an album, too.
ReplyDeleteFirst one I owned - Thriller, Michael Jackson (with some of his earlier ones with the Jackson 5 added as filler), and Fame (the movie, I think). They were copies though. First ones I bought were (I think) Wham! on tape and Lionel Richie (Dancing on the Ceiling was on it, not sure what the record's called). Thriller I re-bought on iTunes, the others I don't have anymore.
ReplyDeleteThriller was my first too! I was in 3rd grade . I had a Thriller themed birthday party.. It was rad.
DeleteFirst album was GoGo's Beauty and the Beat
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteLike all good Canadian girls my age, my first tape was Bryan Adams - Waking Up the Neighbours. I have the album on my computer now, the tape is long gone.
ReplyDeleteOMG Frufru - I had COMPLETELY forgotten about those books. I had a number of them as well! Thanks for bringing back the hidden memory.
ReplyDeleteFirst LP ordered through my parent's Columbia record club: "Johnny Cash Live at Folsom Prison"
ReplyDeleteFirst 45 purchased: "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" by ELTON JOHN (Sorry Beatles, Elton's version was better)
First LP purchased: "Grease" soundtrack
First 8-track purchased: Either "Bat out of Hell" by Meatloaf or "I'm in You" by Peter Frampton, I forget which.
First cassette: Not sure.
First CD purchased: "Ritual de lo Habitual" Jane's Addiction
First MP3/iTunes download: None yet.
Topper - first CD for me was Depeche Mode Violator - right in the same time frame as Jane's Addiction, which was also on heavy rotation in my life.
DeleteFYI: "Bat out of Hell" is the only record I've invested in every medium to-date: LP, 8-track, cassette, CD, and burned from the CD to my MP3 player.
ReplyDeleteThe first music I ever purchased on my own was Poison's first album. I bought it on vinyl from the K-Mart down the highway from us. It was $7 I think. The album itself is long gone but holds a special place in my heart. I will always maintain it was way more punk-influenced than any of their other work and should be considered apart from the rest of their catalog.
ReplyDeleteThat was my second album I think? Was it the one where the cover is four squares with each of them made up in full women's make up? I made my dad buy me that album and I remember him commenting something like " those are some hot chicks " and me laughing being like " Daaaaad.. Those are dudes ! " pretttty sure it was at Kmart too ha!
Delete@Jen the first "tape" that my parents bought me that was something not kid-like was Rio too! I still love that one!
ReplyDeleteThe first I bought with my own money-slippery when wet- Bon Jovi
I believe the first new record album was Aqualung in 1977, and I still have it and play it. Never got it on CD, but I "plan to" burn the record into iTunes.
ReplyDeleteOr maybe her attention
Is drawn by Aqualung
Who watches through the railing
As she plays. ...
my first album I bought was a cassette tape, Nirvana - Bleach. Yes I upgraded to CD. I obhgt this when i was 9. Got me into a bunch or great music like mudhoney, buzzcocks, the sex pistols, and sonic youth :)
ReplyDelete1st record album - Meet the Beatles. Yeah, I'm old.
ReplyDeleteMy first was Michael Jackson, Bad.
ReplyDelete@ Topper: Bat Out of Hell was on the record player when I lost my virginity.
ReplyDelete@ Holiday - OMG, that gives me the heeby jeebies, mostly because Meatloaf always gave me the heeby jeebies!
DeleteGettin busy back in my youth always seemed to involve Depeche Mode albums.
DeleteBritney Spears-... Baby One More Time. I still listen to it all the time :)
ReplyDelete@Lucas - my first was Poison, too! I wore that tape out. Every once in a while, our local alt.rock station will air one of their songs and I magically transform in that dork you see singing power ballads at the stoplight.
ReplyDeleteColumbia Record Club - what a blast from the past !
ReplyDeleteI think it was a 45 of Elton John's Philadelphia Freedom.
ReplyDeleteNorman Greenbaum's "Spirit in the Sky".It was the 45 and the b-side was Milk Cow... as in "jethro bought himself a milk cow.... and he called her bess" 1969... I was 6. That is no excuse tho. LOL
ReplyDeleteOh and no I do not still have it.
ReplyDeleteShadow Dancin' by Andy Gibb. First LP was Back In Black. And I remember this post from before, cuz I found out who was my age (and how old AuntLicky was) ;)
ReplyDeleteFittingly, my first vinyl was Madonna's "The First Album". It's at my mom's house.
ReplyDeleteThe first song I ever downloaded, back when Napster was a thing, was "Boys 'n' Da Hood" by Dynamite Hack.
@maja.....u r AWESOME,re: dynamite hack's BOYZ N DA HOOD.
Delete;-)
@HolidayinCambodia Was it playing "Paradise by the Dashboard Light?"
ReplyDeleteCassette tape - Better than Ezra's single, Good. Think I was 12
ReplyDeleteCassette tape - Better than Ezra's single, Good. Think I was 12
ReplyDeleteBoz Scaggs -- Silk Degrees. Yes. I am old.
ReplyDeleteI got a cassette little boom box (it was pink) from my godmother one year, i think it was '86...with 2 cassette tapes, slippery when wet- Bon Jovi and True Blue- Madonna....shortly after, i bought my first tape-Violent Femmes
ReplyDeleteI think it was War, U2. I switched over to CDs in my teens and never looked back. Gave the vinyl more or less on permanent loan to my friend Jeff, who is a major collector of vinyl. It's in a better place there.
ReplyDeleteExtreme Pornograffiti on cassette :-)
ReplyDeleteI still LOVE them!
Extreme Pornograffiti on cassette :-)
ReplyDeleteI still LOVE them!
The Grass Roots LP. Their hit single was "I'd Wait a Million Years". I begged and begged my parents to let me buy the album, and I played it over and over. The lead singer was named Rob something, and I thought he was so cute. off to Google...
ReplyDeleteWhen I was 5 my mom got the vinyl of On the Radio - Donna Summer and I was obsessed with it - still an --wanted to change my name to DONNA.I miss them both :(
ReplyDelete@somkarella, I was obsessed with On The Radio! That pink and purple cover with Donna Summer on the jukebox was the most glamorous thing in the world to me when I was little!
Delete@stinkarella* don't know what autocorrect thought I meant!
DeleteI never bought any albums - my cousins had a ton of awesome albums like the Three Degrees and Earth Wind & Fire Etc. and my girlfriends had all the cool ones like Bay City Rollers and David Cassidy!! My favorite was the Jackson 5 album my girlfriend owned we played the shit out of that one! As a matter of fact if you ask me who taught me to dance I would say Michael Jackson :)
ReplyDeleteFirst cassette, Revolver by The Beatles (gift from my Mum).
ReplyDeleteFirst Vinyl, Heaven and Hell by Black Sabbath (it was a couple of years later in my "mildy angry teen episode" and I don't think I bought it, rather it was given to me by a school mate).
Years later I bored Ronnie James Dio (RIP) with that story at the first gig I worked in Asia, and he was like "Dude, drink this" as he passed me a bottle of Grey Goose.
That's freakin' awesome! Love DIO (R.I.P.) - I saw him perform around 15 years ago.
DeleteNot sure it was my first but I do remember having the cassette of Cool as Ice soundtrack. Oh hey I was the only one. I played it non-stop.
ReplyDeleteMy first album was britney's first album on cassette. I thought it sucked and only listened to it a few times after. I think I eventually threw it away.
ReplyDelete1st record: The Beatles "Hello Goodbye" single. First album "More of the Monkees". Still have the Beatles single. Lost the Monkees album somewhere along the way (probably from embarrassment as I got older).
ReplyDeleteIt was a 45 of the Osmonds. Puppy Love. I was a huge Donny Osmond fan.
ReplyDeletedonner, my older sister's first 45 was Puppy Love, by Paul Anka:)
DeleteDiana G, sure I've told this story before on here, but anyway around 2007 they did a tour in Asia of Heaven and Hell, so it was Ronnie and the rest of the band.
ReplyDeleteOne of my roles was to sort the backstage alcohol. They were back-to-back with Megadeth - who wanted a couple of cases of beer, half a case of wine, etc. for the whole band.
Black Sabbath's was all personalised, and like an alcoholics Amazon list. Ronnie wanted 4 bottles of Grey Goose. I'd scored all the beer (swapped out all the light beer crap for a local craft brewer's selection - which they loved). But they couldn't do the Grey Goose.
When my error came to light, I went to find Mr Dio to apologise. Couldn't find him. Got a phone call from a mate who was out shopping with his wife, telling me he'd burst past them into a duty free store, bought his own, and ran back to the concert venue.
They also consumed most of it before going on to play a really great show. I muttered "How?" as they left the dressing room. Ronnie overheard, turned and said "Been doing it for 35 years mate".
My first big band I worked with, and they were frigging legends. Downhill ever since!
Great story - he truly is a legend. I loved when I would see him on TV interviews saying how his grandma invited the "rock-on" symbol with her fingers. When I saw him, he was touring with Iron Maiden - another amazing band, BTW...needless to say, it was an awesome night. ;-)
DeleteCount Jerkula:
ReplyDeleteMe too! I now have the HD digital version. Coolest album cover ever.
Spice girls first album! Don't have if any more. It got scratched!
ReplyDeleteI bought a tape of Snoop Doggy Dogg's "what's my name"..... Clean version one side, dirty the other..... And I was about 8!
ReplyDeleteFirst 45s were Jumping Jack Flash and Pacman Fever. My mom made me return Jumping Jack Flash. First albums included David Bowie and Bruce Springsteen and of course I have them on CD.
ReplyDelete@SingBlue
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing your story!
First album was Pat Benetar's Hit Me with your Best Shot and tape was the Go Go's Beauty and the Beat. Both of them were from my brother on my birthday. I still have the Pat Benetar album (my tape deck ate the tape after listening to it a million times).
ReplyDeleteMy cassette of Beauty and the Beat on my light yellow Casio radio made me very cool on the back of the school bus...
DeleteHanson was my first tape and Spice Girls was my first album.
ReplyDeleteFrufra I had some of those tapes! Those and the Silly Kids Songs with "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt" and "There's a hole in my bucket dear Liza dear Liza"
Oh jeez, now I can't stop singing silly songs.
First 45 was the Beatles' "I Want To Hold Your Hand", when I was 6. First LP, a few years later, was "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" by Iron Butterfly. My musical tastes matured from age 6 to age 10.
ReplyDeleteABBA -Arrival
ReplyDeleteMariah Carey and Shania Twain way back in 1994.
ReplyDeleteNew Kids on the Block - Hangin' Tough. My family took me to their concert. I remember being so excited and saying I thought I would faint. To this day they still bring it up, especially around friends, boyfriends.
ReplyDeleteAmazing. that was the second or third one I ever got. :)
DeleteVinyl, Debbie Gibson- Electric Youth
ReplyDeleteI wish I still had it. I used to rock out.
I purchased the album Blondie's Parallel Lines. I don't have it but still think it was a great record.
ReplyDeleteCarole King, Tapestry, when I was 11. It's still one of my faves. I started buying all the Doors albums when I was 15. Still some of my faves.
ReplyDelete"Bye Bye Love" - Everly Brothers. I did not re-buy it later.
ReplyDelete@emeyekay -- we're both around the same age, live in the same city, and are planning weddings. Are you sure you're not my Teo?
ReplyDeleteLondon Calling .....sigh....it's tough having such good taste.....
ReplyDeleteShe Loves You by the Beatles. Yes, that long ago.
ReplyDeleteThe Partridge Family Album, vinyl. HUGE crush on David Cassidy. First really good album: Tapestry by Carole King.
ReplyDeleteVinyl - Queen "A Night at the Opera"
ReplyDeleteFirst record was Carole King, Tapestry for I think $3.99 (I know, I'm old!) at EJ Korvettes. And, yes - I bought it on CD
ReplyDeleteWham!, "Make It Big." I wore that cassette tape to shreds!
ReplyDeleteAnd I replaced it on CD then MP3.
ReplyDelete@jazzy nkotb was my first concert, I was in the 6th grade I think? Someplace out there there is a picture of me and my friend holding our I love Jordan and I love Donnie signs.
ReplyDelete@annanaannnaaaa I owned the Debbie Gibson electric youth perfume and sang that song like I wrote it, along with every sad break up song on there.
It wasnt long after my Debbie Gibson/NKOTB days that the posters of the cute boy banders and the two coreys came down and the hair bands went up. I remember having one of Sebastion Bach from Skid Row in just a towel and giving the finger that I hid behind my door so my parents didn't see it.
And yes I traded up most of the tapes that I had..some I couldnt bare to listen to again though :)
Karma Chameleon
ReplyDeleteEnglish indie Rocker Jack Green 'Reverse Logic' in 1981 on vinyl.
ReplyDeleteNever did come out on CD so I finally downloaded the whole thing
From some Japanese fanzite a few years ago.Ipod worthy!!
Oh, boy...this is embarrassing...the first album I ever bought myself was John Denver's Greatest Hits, and I got it at the local discount department store. There was also a Rexall drug store in the town across the Connecticut River in Vermont that had a selection of albums, and I remember buying a bunch over there, too. Some others I got not long thereafter were the Carpenters' greatest hits, Carole King's Tapestry, Elton John's greatest hits, and, sometime in '74-75, Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark. The John Denver album is no doubt somewhere in my parents' house, but I've still got all the others in my vinyl collection; the only one I ever got on CD is Court and Spark, and nearly 40 years later, it's still one of my all-time favorite albums--it just gets better and better over time.
ReplyDeleteMy parents bought me the Go-Go's We Got the Beat 45. I did not buy is when I changed to CDs. My first CD was by the Damn Yankees :-/ My boyfriend bought it for me when he bought me my first CD player for high school graduation!
ReplyDeleteDuran Duran albums are the only things I bought on vinyl, CD and MP3 :)
Queen-News of the World.
ReplyDeleteGreat album but Get Down, Make Love was kind of lost on me at the time.
My first tapes were Bob Marley's Greatest Hits and Violent Femmes (along with some goofy casingles that I bought on the same day). I totally remember buying them from The Warehouse - so 80's! I don't have the tapes anymore, but I'm pretty sure I have at least 200 Bob Marley songs on cds that an ex burned for me. Thank you, Sir!
ReplyDeleteThe first album I bought with money I'd earned working part time was INXS self titled. It had a painting of people on a beach on the cover, it was vinyl.
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteTake That - Everyting Changes -93 . I really loved them at the time and had a mayor crush on Mark Owen..
ReplyDeleteMy first vinyl that I bought for myself was The Locomotion, Kylie's version. The first tape I bought for myself was Poison, Open Up and Say Ahh. My first CD was John Farnham, Whispering Jack (the one with 'You're The Voice' on it.
ReplyDeleteThey are all on my iPod.
My taste in music is ... 'eclectic'?
My parents had me when they were 45 and 55. They were also quite religious in a quiet kind of way, and the most rockin thing played in the house until I came along was Gilbert and Sullivan operettas. Welsh choirs on quieter days.
ReplyDeleteMy sister was very rebellious and played "Hair" and "Jesus Christ Superstar" constantly. Instead of moving toward rock, she played Carole King's Tapestry (which I still know backwards, forwards and sideways) and Simon and Garfunkel (yawn) and broadway musicals (yay).
My second 45 was Tina Charles' "I Love to Love". My old records are around somewhere. The first LP I bought was definitely a Rush album.
The most recent CD I purchased was a new
ReplyDeleterecording by a CDAN reader and it is terrific!!!!
The Doors
ReplyDeleteFirst one ever was the Dirty Dancing sound track. Then the Little Mermaid Soundtrack. From there was the Robin Hood Prince of Thieves Sound track w/ the " Everything I do" song by Bryan Adams, was so sad to hear that he was a groupie gathering douche!
ReplyDeleteThe Monkees!
ReplyDeleteC'mon, Agent, don't leave us hanging - who?
ReplyDelete@Anna, I was *obsessed* with the Beauty & the Beast soundtrack. I can still sing every single song without missing a word. And most of the Little Mermaid soundtrack, too.
@Tuxedo, that is awesome in a very special way. G&S operettas! <3
Osmonds- "Homemade" album
ReplyDelete@viewer
ReplyDeleteRemember the B side of that was "Put the bone in"!!!
I can't remember my first cassette, although I think I still have them all. The first Cd I bought was Chicago, can't remember which one but I loved Saturday in the Park. It was not my first choice but it was on sale and I had little money.
ReplyDeleteI forgot about Columbia Music House! I signed up with them and BMG so many times.
