Nature is awesome.
Flash mob or upcoming earthquake.
They're either chasing something or being chased. The birds overhead seem to be hoping they churn up some fish.
Were they heading out to sea?
Is this really a mystery or does this happen often?
This is a little eerie. I agree with you Ms. Cool...either an earthquake or some other natural disaster.
This website mat be on to something ;-) :
www.anti-dolphin.org.
The sound of the makes me feel cold! I love how you can hear excited people sounds, too.
The sound of the WIND
They know something we don't
Wow, and man-o-man-o-man. I love Mother Nature!
Ya, cetaceans! No need to get paranoid, this is what happens when you give a hardy species at least some basic protections. If you think this clip is dramatic, wait until the orcas come back.
This actually happened last year, not in as great numbers but still an unordinarily large dolphin super pod. Pods can range from 20-200 dolphins. When more than a few pods get together it is called a super pod. When this many get together it is called a super mega pod.
Biologist think this could be a path the dolphins normally take and it just hasn't been recorded before. I have seen a super pod of orcas, some 70 or so orcas. It was amazing, I was on land with my camera while the lovely assholes sit in their boats trying to get as close as possible. I always wonder if the orcas get bothered by all the boats motor noise, the mostly turn them off but when they are halling ass trying to see more whales they make a hell of a noise.
Sorry for the rant. I love marine biology and find it fascinating. :)
I am scared to death of dolphins. They like to frequent my favorite surf spot and catch waves with us, but they also feed off a pier there as well. I don't want them thinking I am trying to steal food or something and have them ram me.
Nothing worse than being in the wrong neighborhood at the wrong time.
Oddly enough, it's the sailboats that seem to piss off the orcas, at least in Puget Sound. There's more than a few stories of the pods in the San Juans sidling up to sailboats out of the blue and banging on their hulls. No one's actually been sunk, though.
Lovely!
B- oh yes. I have seen some orcas get super close to the sailboats. Maybe that because they are not making a bunch of noise with an electric motor. So to the whales it is pretty weird having this large "thing" in your space. Same for kayakers, I wonder how they don't get flipped sometimes.
This video reminds me strongly of Douglas Adams' "So long, and thanks for all the fish" (the phrase, not the book) which was the dolphins' goodbye to humans as they beat it off Earth before it was destroyed by aliens to make room for an intergalactic by-pass.
Scary. Or maybe they are swimming out to where there will be no tsunami. Super-scary (I live in SoCal).
I'm just waiting for the day that the orcas who migrate down the California coast discover that there's a colony of fat, complacent sea lions living at Pier 39 and come looking for dinner. That'll be quite a show for the tourists!
Maybe someone told the dolphins (or they figured out) that we don't have a 'Cove' here in 'Merica.
Still haven't seen that movie and don't think I'll ever be able to bear to watch it.
Saw this on the NBC news last night - they said they had gathered because thee was a huge gathering of whatever they eat - it was like a buffet for them. Same with the whales. News said it's unusual but nothing worrisome.
I'm shaking my head over people thinking that there's anything scarily prophetic about that clip. That's typical of the thriving coastal marine biosphere that used to exist along the California coast before widespread human migration decimated the habitat. Read Two Years Before the Mast, which includes a lot of descriptions of what coastal California was like when it was still a sparsely populated Mexican colony.
B- it's like people realize there is other stuff on this planet!!! Only shit! :) seeing pictures from space of the Bay Area I would NOT want to be any sort of marine life. It is just nasty down there. Oakland has that whole cargo ship area down by the airport, from the photos you can see plumes of debri pushing into the water. Even where the bay meets the ocean you can see a color difference.
When I worked on the boat my coworkers would throw crap into lake Washington, it pissed me off. The called me names. I DID get the chef to change the soap, which went straight into the water, to a more Eco friendly type.
Thank goodness someone listened to the voice of reason Smash.
I would love to swim with the dolphins albeit not this many of them. Yes, marine life is amazing and hopefully we don't decimate that as well. Oh well, a girl can dream.

Thank you sherry. It is hard being young and passionate about the world, since it is our home! :)
They're partying because they know the world will be ending soon. We've fucked up the planet beyond repair.
Say what you want but I trust the dolphins when they swim in a pod of 100,000 away from something. I feel like no amount of delicious fish would gather a pod that large moving like that. Maybe it is the conspiracy theorist in me, but I wouldn't be surprised if some shit happens soon.
@Sandy, I immediately thought the same thing -- "So long, and thanks for all the fish!"
cool video
