Your Turn

How many hours of television do you watch each week? Take a guess and then try and count it up and see if they match.

  1. Since I got a new TV for Christmas, I've been watching a lot of it. Plus I have netflix streaming! But thankfully I work a whole bunch but if I get a half day, it's my time to have some marathons.

  2. Best guess is 35 hours/wk. It's like a job I actually enjoy.

  3. About 8 if you don't count my being in the room while hubs watches his garbage. TAR, Survivor, Big Brother Canada, starting on Breaking Bad.

  4. My tv is always ON while I'm awake. It comes from years of living alone...it's a false sense of security. I KNOW someone else out there does this too!

'Watch'? No idea. rarely watch, unless it's news, sports, DVR or on HBO.

    Internet's more my problem.....

    1. @libby You're not alone!! When not actively being watched, my TV is on marathons for Golden Girls, Roseanne, Big Bang Theory, or if none of those are on, Diners Drive-Ins and Dives or HGTV :)

    2. @libby & VIPBlonde. I am the same way. I have to have the tv at all times. Even when i sleep. It comforts me. But I also watch a TON of shows.

    3. @VIPblonde, you took the words (and shows) right out of my mouth...I run the exact same ones on mine when tv is not being actively watched :D

    4. The TV is on for background noise at my house, too. Reruns are much more comforting than new programs, but I do have some first-run series I catch up with on the weekends.

When I was in my 20s, I rarely watched TV, but I still had a radio on constantly.

    5. Tv is always on in my house too. I like the theory that its from living alone for so many years. Since shacking up with my fiancée, I still keep it on, though not when I sleep anymore.

  5. I watch maybe one hour on weekdays but Sundays I am absolutely glued to the tv for probably 10 hours.

  6. Wild guess: 10 hrs
    Actual hours counted: 8.5 hrs

  7. I gave up TV for Lent, so ZERO!

My guess would be 15 hours a week; counting it up it's pretty close. Probably 5.5 hours for new shows and the rest is reruns or random crap for background noise.

  8. I *should* clarify that I only DVR 2 and a half hours per week. Sheesh!

    ReplyDelete
  9. I think I watch like 43 shows a week or something like that (or at least that's how many the DVR picks up), but some of them collect on the DVR. I always have it on as "wallpaper" when I'm home though

  10. Probably an hour or two a day depending on if 1 of my shows is on. I have been up until 1 a.m. each night this week watching the BBC's Pride and Prejudice. Some random cable station is airing them all, so I DVRd. I feel like I now need to go reread Bridget Jones' Diary.

  11. Libby, I used to do that, too, but during my senior year of college I got into the habit of not watching as much.

Last year, I gave up all TV that wasn't DVR'd (though this did lead me to DVRing things like Celebrity Ghost Stories) and for about 9 months I stayed in the habit. I don't know what's going to happen this time since I have six weeks' worth of TV stored up and only one week to watch it (I'm moving next Saturday). I'm gonna overdose.

  12. I no longer watch TV. I know I can watch it on my laptop but I don't..I might check out All My Children and OLTL when they come back on.

Libby, I used to do that, too...just leave it on all day and all night. Most of the time with the sound off. I cannot stand commercials: I will snap like a bitch if someone doesn't mute the ads! That is why remotes have a mute button, FFS!

It depends if I'm having a marathon week or not - I watched four episodes of the UK Shameless ( I'm on season 4 ) two days ago but I haven't turned on the tv since. I don't have cable. I have Netflix on the wii and pirate bay is my BFF and I just have an hdmi cord I hook up to my laptop when I want to watch something I download - GOT three days!!!!

So I'd have to say my tv watching is sporadic. I like books. Lots and lots of books.

  15. @libby - I do the same thing, like you because I lived alone for so long. Also, since 9/11, I'm really paranoid I'm going to miss some important news. As for actually watching, probably around 40 hours a week.

TV? Maybe 10 minutes a week, if I just happen to be passing through the room. My son lives with me and if he is awake, the TV is on, so I listen to a lot of it. But the internet? Pretty much all my waking hours. I'm disabled and can't do much but sit, so I sit in front of the computer. Sometimes I play Sims, but even with that, I'm connected to the internet so I can send "gifts" back and forth with my friends who also play.

  17. Syko, I play Scrabble/Lexulous/WordswithFriends up the wazoo. I've got over 50 games going on FB. Oh god, that sounds so pathetic. /sobs

Reese, I'm all about Song Pop on FB. And Criminal Case, and Solitaire Blitz, and Bejeweled Blitz, and Bubble Witch Saga, and....

Also play games on Pogo. Member since 2001.

      Sad.

  18. Dora the Explorer, Super Why, Yo Gabba Gabba, Chica Show, and The Fresh Beat Band are on all day long in rotation. :-)

My wife and I have "dates" when toddler is sleeping to catch up on shows for an hour or so each night. Occasionally snacks and adult beverages are involved. :-)
Could be part of the reason that baby number two is set to arrive in August!
    LOL.

We did finally catch up on Downtown Abbey, Walking Dead, and now catching up on Game of Thrones though...

  20. I watch TV on my iPad while I'm cooking, doing chores, or working on the robot side of my job. If that counts, probably about 15-20 hours a week. I'm a multi-tasking QUEEN!!

@Meanie - I *despise* commercials, that's the number one reason I only watch shows I download onto my iPad or stream via Netflix. I was going to get Hulu so I could get shows faster than Netflix's delayed offerings, but said hell to the no when I found out they have commercials even in the paid version.

    @Alicia, check out kat.ph. :)

  21. From Sunday to Saturday about 20 hours and that is a big deal for me because I used to watch so much more. I still have shows on my DVR from months ago that I haven't seen yet. I finally just today checked out what's on Netflix which I haven't watched in 4 months. Why am I paying for a service that I hardly use; I guess it's just good to know it's there whenever I feel the need.

  22. Hmmm probably 15 at the very most during the week, weekends really depends on what I am doing and how much free time I have. I used to watch 50+ hours a week before I got my shit together, I would just lounge on the couch and watch TV from waking til I finally fell asleep again.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Once upon a time, I didn't have cable and depended on Hulu/Netflix for my addiction to certain shows (thank you CDAN'ers for hooking me on RH:BH)- that kept me at a relatively low 15 - 20 hours a week.
But when I found out that I could get cable internet and cable tv *with* BBC America (yay! Dr Who!)for less than I was paying for my internet connection alone, I switched.
And of course, now they're running an "On Demand Watchathon" until the end of the month... so with that, I find myself glued to the tube catching up on "Game of Thrones", "Dexter", "RH:BH", "Downton Abbey"
... so viewing time is now edging upwards of 30 hours a week.
Help me, I think I'm an addict.

  24. Now, if I'm lucky I get to OUAT, so 1 hour. I don't count the hours of Disney/Nick/streaming kids shows that I'm usually trying to get away from.

However, I did find out you can get whole episodes of Kim Possible on YouTube, so I may be all over that.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Probably 15-20 hours or so, including watching series on Netflix...and movies.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Ooh, Xander, you snuck that one in - congrats!

  27. Congrats, Xander!!

  28. About 40 hours a week

    ReplyDelete
  29. Big Bang Theory
    New Girl
    Mindy Project
    Whitney
    Girls
    Canuck games (6 hours)
    Bill Maher
Snooki and Jwow- don't you judge me!
    Catfish

Ya 10 hours was what I guessed give or take a few for movies. I've really scaled back on my viewing. Maybe Boardwalk Empire and SOA when it's new.

  30. jesus I totally forgot about Food Network! add another 5 easily.

  31. Hmm...currently DVRing: Southland, The Americans, Walking Dead, Justified, and just caught up with Breaking Bad. Getting ready for GoT and Mad Men. Guess it depends on what is on-less than 10 hours a week, and if the husband is gone, I hardly turn the TV on. Now the iPad is a different story.

Congrats, Xander! I got an email today that my A+ list shirt is ready to ship, woot! :)

    ReplyDelete
  32. @Libby - count me in too. I don't necessarily watch it but the TV is usually on just for the noise factor. Plus I can't go to sleep without the TV on and if I wake up in the middle of the night and it has turned off (I try and set the timer) I have to turn it back on. I even leave a TV on when I'm not home for the dogs.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I DVR Project Runway. So it's what - 42 minutes a week?

    ReplyDelete
  34. Thanks all, for reaffirming I'm not alone. haha!

ALM---PR is 1 and a half hours now. So maybe like an hour of actual content. If you can call it content on PR anymore. SIGH...

  35. Hate admitting this but while I am on the computer my tv is always on . Mostly the ID channel .

    ReplyDelete
  36. I only watch Youtube or Hulu, so around 4 or so. Now internet surfing, that's a different story, way too much.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Maybe 14. Depends if my husband and I decide to watch a marathon of GOT or Spartacus. We can be up all night like that Portlandia skit with Battlestar Galactica.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Easy. Zero. My stepson would watch 24/7 so while I brought my TV when I moved into my new husband's home, we didn't subscribe for any TV service. And we have to use a Net Nanny to limit and momonitor his computer access.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I don't own a TV. The closest I get to it is watching youtube videos posted on blogs.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I'm right there with Libby...if I'm awake, then the TV is on! I can watch endless hours of television/movies just because I enjoy escaping reality. I know I should be out enjoying life, happy hours, dating, walking/jogging, working out but I guess watching new movies and shows is MY hobby. What others might not enjoy hours on end, I do! :)

  41. I have a donated Quasar TV. DVR? What the hell is that? I do have an unhooked up TIVO under my tv donated as well from my old sister wife (she moved to LaLa land last year. At Blanc Debris Manor (country house) we have a huge (donated) TV that we use to watch rented movies. I would estimate we watch MAYBE 5 hours a week. Typically documentaries and PBS, Anthony Bourdain's - Layover and Food Channel. I do watch Monday TV and Big Bang. Typically nothing during the day or weekends until we get back to the apt. in the city by the bay. Hence my inability to answer most blinds. (That and being stupid.*L*)

  42. I put the tv on at 5pm for news. Put on lots if science and documentary shows- cos i a nerd, lol. I too hv tv on, but also reading or online. I actually watch8 hrs a week, not by choice, just nothing on i like. Just like the noise in backround, like alit of us.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I guessed 15 hours a week, and on thinking about it I probably watch about 16. I love TV! But my kids own it until they're in bed *L* so I get two hours a night and MAYBE three on the weekends. We PVR everything so I can cram a lot of watching into my two hours. :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. I have the teevee on MSNBC most of the day, and later at night I'll watch a show or two on the dvr. I usually watch more movies than teevee, though.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I'd say about 20. I don't start watching TV until 8 pm or after, but I go to bed early around 10:30 pm.

    ReplyDelete
  46. 24/7 - tv or music always on in the background.

    ReplyDelete
  47. 36 hours. this is with a 40+ hr work week and a 13+ hr side gig... last year it was easily close to 54 hrs a week

    ReplyDelete
  48. 2-3.

The only television show I watch is Walking Dead. I usually watch Talking Dead right after, and maybe the rerun.
