Mel Gibson Screamed At Gaby Hoffmann - Made Her Cry

Mel Gibson has such a way with people doesn't he? When Gaby Hoffmann was just 11 years old she worked with Mel Gibson when he was directing her in The Man Without A Face. It was the first time he had ever directed anything and was probably more tense than usual so was probably drinking more and blaming all the problems of the world on Jewish people and here was Gaby, an 11 year old who she says she set Mel off because, "I think I was acting like a kid instead of a professional actor. It happens once in a while when you're a kid actor."

When asked about Mel's temper she said, "He screamed at me. Oh, God, he really screamed at me. He just started cursing and screaming at me." Yeah, I'm sure his kids think he is probably a joy to be with too. Gaby says she has not spoken to him since that film.

I don't think he reserves his temper tantrums for just Jewish people, it seems like he's an equal opportunity anal wart.

  3. No child should be screamed at, professional actor or not.

  4. Hoffmann...is not necessarily a jewish name. Usually 2 N's is german, non-jewish and her father's last name was Herrera.

  8. I think she is the one who grew up in a hotel Eloise style with a free spirited mother and sister. I bet having a very angry man scream at her was a bit of a shock. No child should have to deal with that a-hole.

  11. @sandybrook--I didn't know that!! I used to watch ATWT when I was growing up and had a love/hate thing for James (hated Barbara, though...lol). Gaby actually does look quite a bit like him in that pic...

  12. Who cares? Is a director being a narcissist douche and screaming at people, whatever their age, such an odd thing? She is lucky he didn't invite her to Nicholson's place and cram Quaaludes down her throat before casting couching her.

  13. Gabi's dad is Anthony Herrera??? Now THAT's news. Mel Gibson being an asshole - not news.

  14. Yeah she also said John Hughes was mean to her. Maybe she needed yelling at. You do have to be a professional. I've had directors yell at me too.

  16. I heard James Cameron is a screamer and Christian Bale.
I'm sure being a child actor can be annoying to work with. Gary Coleman said looking back on "Different Strokes" , he was a brat at times.

  17. I haed James Stenbeck's guts. (I think he died 4 or 5 times on that show at least) Apparently he might not have been acting so much being that douchebag. You have a kid be a part of their life even if u cant stand the other parent don't take it out on the poor kid.

  18. She said have told Mel that she just worked with Spielberg and he was a way better director, just to see the look on his face.

  19. When someone who isn't Jewish tells this then I'll listen.

    1. @CJ She isn't Jewish and I don't think she has any reason to lie and this doesn't sound like something Mel wouldn't do. This probably came up in a longer interview because people always ask former child stars about who they worked and she actually got a lot of work back then. She had nothing but nice things to say about John Candy in one I read. Anyway, I could see someone blowing up if they are trying to work and a kid starts acting up or getting hyper and throwing everyone off, but cursing at them is over the line.

  21. Well, sometimes even the nicest, most patient directors get a bit impatient working with child actors so Mel Gibson doing this doesn't surprise me. Of course the good ones apologise.

  22. I still cannot BELIEVE that this man was my H.S. celebrity crush. Gaby was an adorable child; who could yell at such a darling little punim?!
