Price Is Right Contestant Busted For Disability Fraud

Umm, note to self. If I ever file a disability claim which states that I can't reach or grasp and collect disability payments for said injuries for almost a decade, I better not then show up on The Price Is Right and spin the Big Wheel which requires reaching and grasping. Cathy Cashwell of North Carolina had that happen to her and now faces sentencing in federal court in September after pleading guilty earlier this week. Cathy also posted photos of herself zip lining on a Carnival Cruise to her Facebook page which investigators also saw. Note to self. Stick to the buffets on the cruise.

  4. It boggles the mind how much people put on Facebook, Twitter, their phones, etc. It's the new version of bragging about your escapades, but with proof that will get you tossed into jail. Not a terribly bright thing to do.

  8. I'm disabled right now, and twice in the last 6 months, weirdly-marked vans (cheesy-fake-sounding business names that don't show up on google) have driven up to my house with the windshield pointing straight at my front door, then leave 20 seconds later. (The way I keep the front door makes it obvious that someone is home.)

Seriously, our neighborhood is almost a total dead-end area. I do think they check up and make sure you're not sneaking a day job. Disability benefits are NOT enough to live on; I'm sure fraud is attempted a lot. I'm happy they check me; they can check all they want.

  9. haha I used to work for an insurance investigation company that would track down suspicious claims for insurance companies. They would come into court with bandages and canes. Our investigators would play video of them frolicking around or working second jobs they weren't supposed to be working. As long as they didn't record audio it was perfectly legal to video them.

Insurance fraud is no joke and you have no idea how many people commit it thinking they are getting away with it. Big insurance is watching.

Assholes like this are why rates go up and when you really need it. It won't be there for you.

  11. @libby it sounds like they were checking up on you. They will also follow you if you drive so watch out!

But if they see you aren't doing anything illegal thy back off pretty quickly. They have so many cases to go through.

  12. Mr. B used to be an insurance company investigator - he said the ration of real claims to fraud was about 50:50. And when I was an x-ray tech, when I worked in orthopedics we did IMEs all the time and you'd be amazed how many times I was accused of switching or doctoring x-rays. These cheaters have NO shame.

And yeah, they'll not only watch your house, they'll follow you. There was one woman, said she couldn't lift anything heavier than a loaf of bread, an investigator caught her coming out of Publix with 2 12 packs of cokes under her arm. She's the same bitch who accused me of doctering her x-rays. The MD showed me the videotape - we had a good laugh.

  13. And please know I'm NOT accusing anyone here of faking it. There are MANY legitimate claims!

  16. I was just at a graduation and saw an extended family member who is on disability for a supposed back injury. Methinks that if one's back is too sore to work, one's back is too sore to wear high heels, no? But no. Sheesh. That pisses me off, I love seeing malingerers being caught.

  17. I prefer they investigate, because less fraud means more legitimate claims get the benefits they deserve.

Thanks, auntliddy. It's okay. Sorry about your arthritis.

And timebob--HOLY CRAP! I hardly ever go anywhere, but I'll be checking my rear-view now! thanks.

  18. A co-worker probably turned her in. They probably knew she was faking it and were resentful.

  19. If you're going to create a ruse, really live it. Would it kill you to NOT spin the wheel and post it on FB?

  20. This bugs the crap out of me. So many people living on the small amount that disability or workers comp pays and then people who don't need it exploit it.

I was hurt at work and Workers Comp was sooo good to me--probably because it was 100% due to negligence at the workplace--and I didn't threaten to sue. I never took anything I didn't really need and they really took care of me.

In the end, they required me to go to one of their own doctors to be "evaluated" and it backfired on them--he told me--"you'll never be able to work at a job that has you on your feet much"--and they had to pay a settlement in the end on his say-so, not because I asked.

I hope they make this woman pay back every penny.

  21. I agree wholeheartedly that malingerers should be held accountable and have to repay the money they've taken from people who deserve to get it.

Luckily some, like this broad are stupid, as was the man in court who when asked by the attorney "How high can you now lift your arm?". He raised his arm to barely his waist, after being asked how high he could raise his arm before the accident his arm shot straight up in the air.

  22. I'm waiting on a decision now on my disability case, and I'm terrified they'll turn me down. People like this make me so angry because then those who DO need it have to go through so much more scrutiny/tests, etc. It's scary to hear that they check up on ppl like this, yikes! But they can check on me all they like, I don't mind.

  23. One time, this man accused me of rear-ending him in a parking lot of a grocery store and he took me to court. My kids were fighting in the back seat and didn't notice me turning around when I was reversing so they couldn't back my claim. He arrived in a neck brace pretending that he was more hurt than he was. My brilliant husband had the idea to throw his briefcase on the floor to make him turn his head quickly. He did and we won! Case dismissed!

  24. Yes they will make them pay it back. And they could go to jail as well.

  28. I worked in Disability for 5 long years and the stories I could tell. There was one year it was ridiculous how many people I busted through surveillance and internet sleuthing. I wasn't even trying to look hard for fraud and it kept dropping in my lap. BTW- depending on the plan the employer elects, it can be a $$ situation worth scamming for.
