Annual MV Clue
It is that time of the year. Another year has flown by and this week marks seven years since I first figured out how Blogger worked and hit publish for the first time. Almost 30,000 posts later and hundreds of thousands of comments I still like to go back to that first blind item that people still discuss. MV. If you have not read it yet, you can read the original 2006 blind right here.
I have a couple of new clues to offer this year.
She has been on a very popular CBS sitcom.

DeleteI couldn't help but notice when reading the old posts on the site that people used to be a LOT more respectful in general - to Enty & to each other. It's crazy what some people will say anonymously that they would NEVER say to someone's face. Sad, really. I've only been here a few years, but I wish I had been enjoying it in the beginning!

I've always assumed it was Lopez.
ReplyDeleteBritney was something of an unknown name (apart from the Disney thing as a child) when she released "Hit Me Baby One More Time," and it didn't make much sense for the producers to pick somebody who couldn't sing and wasn't an established name but looked good, then another woman who would be her voice.
Lopez was already a movie star when she started her musical career, she almost never sings live and it makes "sense" to book a sound-alike singer, so the diva won't be obliged to spend time in the studio.

ReplyDeleteIf Lopez suddenly showed range on her recordings, compared to her spoken voice, more people would suspect that she doesn't really sing on her own recordings. Having a more limited singer makes it more convincing.
Nobody has ever bought a disc by Jennifer Lopez because the voice sounded great. But she sold plenty of them because she was nearly naked in the videos (or was in a wet T-shirt), got exposure through her names and the tunes and the production were sometimes catchy.

I used to sit in the audience for the new Mickey Mouse Club when Brit was on. She doesn't have the strongest voice but she CAN sing. Producers were interested in her bc she could dance quite well, had good comedic timing and the ability to sing while being a pretty face.

ReplyDeleteI would think with all the mental health problems BS has had that if this wasn't truly her she would of just quit singing all together. J.lo could be right but her debut album came out in 1999 the original blind implies the year 2000 as being when she first started recording.

ReplyDeleteTV Junkie, in the 'good old days' if you weren't a member of the clique you weren't even acknowledged.
Also, the ones currently writing this blog aren't the original guy who started it. He sold it.
Sure he may chime in with a post once and awhile but it's not the same as it was 7 years ago.
Next time you take a trip down nostalgia lane, compare the writing styles and the nature of the stories.
The people writing now are very different than the guy writing then.
I totally get that, Bacon Ranch, and I totally agree. The original writer was obviously very different, and it's a shame that it got so big that he has to farm out the work. I'mjust saying that the general tone seemed to be different. There were real stories with some blind items thrown in. It appears that it used to be a more enjoyable read. Hell, it was a more enjoyable read a few years ago when I started reading! I like the community here, but I guess what I'm saying is that if I started to read it today, I might not come back - the poor grammar and spelling as well as the vitriol are a bit off-putting. That being said, I also don't complain about the choice of stories. I wouldn't know a real housewife of anything if I tripped over one of them, so I just don't read those stories.

ReplyDeleteNow for my annual MV diatribe:
First of all - remember the Timmy/ Shimmy blind? And how, when it was revealed, it turned out that the original BI was filled with red herrings and wasn't quite as juicy as it read.
MV will never be revealed, but I believe that if it ever was, it would be the same deal.
At first, I thought there was absolutely no way MV could be Britney or J-Lo, because the blind said that "it would rock the music industry to its core". Finding out that Britney or J-Lo have other people singing for them would shock exactly 0 people in the music industry. Or anywhere else. Britneys sweeteners have been named and interviewed, and there have been numerous examples of Britney's demo tracks posted on YouTube as sung by someone else.
I believe S is someone who made some extra cash singing on some demos. She got paid a one time sum of money for services rendered and the demo was sold to the record company to do whatever they wanted with. And then they did.
Later on, when MV made it really big, S wanted a bigger piece of the pie, but she already signed over the rights to those recordings so she can't get the royalties she feels she deserves, the royalties that would make her a fairly wealthy woman.
An example of someone picking "one time payment" instead of "percentage of royalties" and probably regretted it a bit: Vincent Price, for his speaking part on Michael Jackson's "Thriller". He was credited for his work, of course, but still. That had to have stung a bit.
So there you have it.
Now, when it comes to J-Lo, I can clearly hear her speaking voice on her songs, but she is likely autotuned + has backup singers sweetening her with mixed down harmonies. And yes, Britney was a great singer for a kid, but things change. We know for a fact she has other voices mixed in with hers.
So, yeah, MV could be either of these two, or someone else, I jus don't believe the story is as shocking as we originally thought when the blind was first posted.

DeleteI agree with you, but both J-Lo and Brittney are currently shells of their former selves. The height for them was in the 2000's, which one of the clues had put the time frame in. We'd have to remember how they were everywhere in those years and how 'shocking' it would have been to hear that they weren't really the singers given the stadiums and venues they were selling out at that time. Now though, there are people out there that might not even know Brittney and J-Lo are/were singers.
In fact, I would argue that If you are a pop-singer who dances around quite a bit, most people expect you to lip sync. I'm not sure where it became acceptable for this to happen, but I think Ashlee Simpson's debacle on SNL in 2004 and the concurrent rise of Auto-tune around 2006-2008 made it ok.

Delete@Maja - I'm kind of on the fence with you, only because I could see this being a Timmy/Shimmy thing. One thing I think about regarding the actual talent is that at the time when JLo was releasing her first album, she was a huge star, and still was at the time the blind was written. So I think for people to find out that such a huge star was an even bigger fraud would be shocking. I try to keep in mind that the general public are not, as a whole, gossip mongers and on top of all of this stuff. Most people couldn't care less, you know?

ReplyDelete@Maja - Eh, it's gotta be somewhat believable, right? Enough to be commercially successful and keep up the charade as long as possible? I agree that it seems like it would have to be one of the really big time divas in order to shake the music industry to its core, but for whatever reason the follow-up "clues" aren't really pointing that direction. I don't know that I think this will even be revealed ever - it's like it's a golden carrot dangling out there to keep people coming back and analyzing and guessing. I do have hope that everyone is wrong and that it IS someone more earth-shattering like your Whitneys & Mariahs!

Back then you need singers and record on tape - today just cubase and computers and its done at starbucks in five minutes, nothing and noone really would come as a surprise nowadays.
I will never believe it's JLo. All of her songs sound exactly like her speaking voice. AND, like someone mentioned, they suck. I thought S was supposed to be a good singer, which is why they hired her to sing instead of MV. So why does the singing still suck?

Britney and JLo sing like they speak plus they're so obvious it can't be them. This backup singer must be able to sing so it has to be someone who comes across as having a really good voice which neither Britney or Jlo could ever be accused of.

ReplyDeleteI liked her first few more "Island" songs. Not they all just sound formulaic. Never heard her speaking voice so I don't know what it is like but probably a much stronger accent than when singing.
And she probably would have just started working with JAY Z in 2007/2007/2008.
One of the big clues that eliminated so many people was that MV was born in the US. Sinead O'Connor was not. Shania Twain was not. (I always thought it was her until then.)

Only an MV blind could bring me out of retirement. I'm still "on the six" with JLo. And she is lying about not having plastic surgery. The Fly Girl has a completely different face. I don't do drama, so I lurk but don't post any more. Someone disagreed with one of my guesses once and ripped me a new one.

There have been many psychological studies done on it.A cult-like confrontational approach is taken to people whose opinions differ from the status quo in various social settings. I lurked for awhile on here too. I wouldnt let that experience keep you from voicing your opinion. Its your right! ;)

ReplyDeleteBritney used to have a pretty good voice, distinctive, odd, nasally, whatever, but still a good voice. She sang on SNL and it was obviously her, with breaks and all. I've never been a fan of hers, but I will give her credit for the voice she used to have. Yes, it has weakened over the years due to her health issues and they now autotune her to death and she lip syncs her concerts, but she doesn't want to be out there anyway. If she wasn't lipsyncing and putting on a good show, there would be riots at those arenas. She will lip sync her Vegas shows too. It's insurance. She could probably sing a song or two live now, but no way can she do a two hour show without "vocal support." She hasn't taken care of her instrument the way the Josh Grobans, Streisands, etc of the world do.

ReplyDeleteI remember when the MV blind very first came out, and there were tons of guesses. I can't remember for sure, but I think in the early days, I might have been on the Shania Twain bandwagon. But for years now, I've thought it was J. Lo. And wasn't it just a couple of months ago that Enty made some reference in a J. Lo story or photo that made us all think it was an MV hint?
The bottom line is, everyone who said Enty & Brit were friends is right. They were friends when this BI started, and Enty never wrote unflattering things about his friends - Leo, Britney, etc.
Whenever he talks about J. Lo, it is ALWAYS with dislike and contempt. And I think this is a big part of why he doesn't like her. Not only is she a nasty person apparently, but her "talent" is based on a sham. Exactly the sort of thing (OG) Enty would despise.

ReplyDeleteI have always believed it was Shania, and I thought some of the clues were red herrings. Because the guy who started her was Mutt Lange, who produced some of the biggest groups for decades---THAT would rock the music world.
He was also Shania's husband when he made her a star, and when I saw video of Shania singing in a very old beauty pageant---TOTALLY different voice.
This was pre-internet for me. I've never been able to find an old vid of Shania online though. Hard to believe nobody uploaded any.
(If anyone finds one, my hat's off to you. I haven't looked in the last year.)
BUT---if I accept all Enty's clues as 'real', I say JLo. HER producer was Diddy, which would certainly have destroyed a huge number of reputations. Diddy was EVERYTHING for those few years, when the blind was written.

I remember her first album, it was pre-Mutt and had What Made You Say That and Dance with the One That Brought You (Sean Penn was the video director, back before everyone associated him solely with sleaze) and her voice was fine.

ReplyDeleteI agree with the Jlo guesses - I remember wathcing one of her concerts on tele and I was shocked to se her basically just rolling about on the floor with a few 'whoa-oh's whilst her backing singers sang the actual song. Compared to Pink or Girls Aloud and other pop tarts, there was a serious lack of actual singing.

This will never get revealed and Enty pulls it out every so often for clicks (congrats all you sheeps!!BAHH from me). It also brings out all the old timers from the original so hey to Maja with a J!
JHo cannot sing her way out of a paper bag and is completely manufactured as is Britney to an extent. But there is evidence of Britney singing A Capella live but never, NEVEH of Jho.
And the only time we did hear Jho was when she was TRYING to sing but she never actually could get the song all the way out. You hear a few words but never even an entire line.
If everyone reads the blind carefully you will see how easy it is to eliminate a lot people. It says about or around 2000, so that doesn't mean exactly. Next, Britney started out as a child on mickey mouse club long before. The time frame alone eliminates Shania, as well as Mariah and Beyonce (who have clearly proven their singing abilities live. I thought j-lo too, but then looking again, it says that S was making a living as a back up and demo singer(who would hire j-lo as a back up singer?) J-lo started as a backup dancer on in living color and for Janet Jackson around the early 90's. Then went into "acting" long before her music career. so either the time frame of this blind is wrong, none of these guesses are right, or its totally BS (which is totally not out of the realm of possibility as some of the blinds here are just too obviously fake or at least grossly exaggerated ).

Please recall that at this time J.Lo was dating Puff Daddy, whom I might add is another shady type of fellow. An NYC radio station played J.Lo's actual voice in the studio and I remember saying, "So THAT's why she didn't sing in Selena." Despite her unfortunate singing voice, she can dance better than anyone else in the industry. And Jenny From The Block was a club banger. Anyway, congrats on 7 years of blogging!

ReplyDeleteI agree, it has to be J. lo and not Brittany. I saw Brittany on the Rosie O'Donnell show, back in the late 90's, and I remember Rosie was on her tour bus and Brit was singing a capella. So this can't be her. It has to be J.Lo. Never seen the girl sing live and she's an absolute bitch. Real nasty. I had thought it was Shania way back when too, because she usually lip syncs, but if the clues are all correct it couldn't be her.

The only time I've ever heard her sing passably well was a performance on AI and that was at the end of her marriage to Marc Anthony. You know she had him be her vocal coach through that whole marriage.

She recorded her first album in 1993 prior to meeting Mutt Lange - "you may be hearing one of the best country torch singers since Patsy Cline. If these MV are real, i think it's been pretty much solved... First- there's footage of Britney recording Me Against the Music, not to mention her live performance of Not a Girl at the AMAs - and she sounds just like the CD so clearly its her on the album.

Whats more, I was always curios if she had some connection with the publishing of Jezebel. She mentioned it in one of her comments, and again, an early article had the same writing style.

ReplyDeleteIf u listen to the chorus I really hear Christina, not Jlo. Their voices are very similar, especially if they are mixed right.
Milian is only credited as a writer and sometimes backup vocalist, but think she sang the whole chorus, not Jlo.

ReplyDeleteAbout ten or so years ago I won tickets to a small, intimate J-Lo concert at a theater near Times Square. You had to be over thirteen to attend, and my kids were younger. I passed the tickets to my cousin and her three teenagers. They went, and said the audience was only a few hundred people and everyone was up close.

Even without the kids it's not Kelly C. She's another one who has been on SNL and obviously performed live. Also, when she's been on The Voice and that horrid Duets show she did, in her coaching moments she'll sing a line or two, and like Xtina, you can tell Kelly has a voice.
ReplyDeleteAn earlier post reminded me that I've seen Britney do something like that too, I think it was years ago on one of those MTV day in the life types of shows where they followed Brit around off stage. She was walking in NYC and she bought sunglasses from a street vendor and admitted that she lost them so often she only bought crappy ones now. At some point during that show she was doing something boring and singing to herself. Not fantastic, but she could carry a tune and wasn't all weak and breathy.

ReplyDeleteActually, I think Vanessa might be too young. Anjelia Pelay is another possibility. I think it's a good bet that Rodney Darkchild Jerkins is the producer. So searching for backup singers he worked with around the time of Jlo's first single is probably the best way to find the voice that made JLo rich. BTW, this IS Jennifer. It's clear, even to naive fans, that JLo vocals are sketchy. Take a moment and compare My Love Don't Cost a Thing to her newer single with Pitbull. Also listen to her live performance on SNL and her leaked studio attempt at Streisand's disco song. Even if MV is fiction, JLO is a definite MilliVanilli story. It's a testimony to modern-day low standards that she made millions off of faking it and avoided serious scrutiny all of this time. She doesn't even deserve Pia Zadora-level fame.
