Blind Item #2

This very much a minor, who is a sometime actor offspring of A listers managed to buy a bottle of duty free liquor at the airport and then sipped from it the entire flight while sitting in First Class alone.

  5. Managed to buy a bottle? That, sir, is impossible. I think it would be easier to break into a bank than get that awesomely cheap booze without alllls the right paperwork. Those people do.not mess around. I may have missed the point of the blind. I saw airport, booze, and it all went south

    2. Okay, Snootches, say you are a naive late teensish/ early twentiesish traveling by yourself to a wedding and you see ALLS this soo cheap booze that actually fits in your meagre budget. Woohoo, right?? You load up a couple few bottles and cigs (back in the day), and march on up...to have more regulation dropped on your oblivious bum than could have possibly been expected. They do.not.play around. Apparently you have to be flying in or out of a country? Not just a couple of provinces over? AND valid identification? Whatever, man, cheap booze should be for all. So that's why I could see the blind reading *got* some booze but not *buy*, but I'm pretty sure also that was not the point of the blind.

  19. I'm having trouble with the logistics here. If Underage Kid was sitting alone in first class*, the source would have to be in the duty-free shop same time, then have a seat within a row or two of Kid to have witnessed it.

    * I assume this means he/she's travelling alone; but there are other people in first class, strangers.

    ReplyDelete
  20. So perhaps wannabe gangsta does what any typical teen looking for trouble does: he asks an adult to buy it for him--gives him a $100 bill (not your typical) and tells him to keep the change. Ive had kids here and in Brooklyn out front the 7/11 (here) bodega (there) if I would buy them beers or ciggies (I declined).

  22. I have to agree with @talkstoomuch. I've never bothered to buy the duty free booze because it seems like such a hassle. Now, I don't fly international more than once a year, so my experience is rather limited, but any time I've seen people purchase duty free, it is carted to the plane ramp in clear sealed heavy plastic bags with the documentation clearly visible....they don't fuck around. How this kid would have been able to sample it throughout the flight is a mystery. I bought a Burberry purse once in duty free....there is a big paper trail with that too.

  24. This sounds like BS to me--every time I've seen sales of duty-free liquor and wine, it's sealed in a bag and you don't get it until the flight lands at your destination.

Maybe it's different when you buy it in the U.S. heading towards other countries, though (?).

  29. I call bullshit on this blind. The amount of liquid one can bring on a plane is next to nil. I had two small, sealed bottles of hot sauce confiscated because they were one oz larger than the maximum allowable limit. They would not let me pour any of it out... Nope. Just took it.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Are they separated yet? Its been a few hours already.

  31. I'm with Unknown as it is completely illegal to drink any duty free on a plane, First Class or not...totes BS blind...

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Absolutely BeckyMae. When you buy duty free they only give it to you once the plane lands. Couple that with the illegality of buying underage AND sipping off a bottle you bring on the plane as well as him being a UM(unaccompanied minor). Just. Can't. Happen.

      Delete
    2. And FTR flight attendants will not allow you to drink off your own bottle. It's a revenue stream for the airlines even if his handler bought the bottle for him. But no one would be allowed to drink something bought from duty free and neither could said passenger bring a bottle on board.

As the Myth Busters say: "This myth has been busted".

      Delete
  32. True wuv never dies!

@unknown, you can take it on the plane and drink it on the plane if you buy it after TSA (where the duty free shops are located). I don't know how it works in other countries, but that's how it works in the US and if Jaden was flying to Paris or Florence or the 9th Level, he'd probably start in a US airport.

Salt Lake City has an impressive amount of duty-free liquor shops.

  37. Morning Chapettes.

Interesting, @Aeol, because this does sound like a Smith Kids blind. What is your take on their current public image?

After you get the duty free, the bags are sealed. It is possible to open them - nobody is checking. The just seems like there's precious little point, since alcohol is free on international flights anyhow.

I've never been carded buying duty free. They definitely want your boarding pass but that doesn't say whether you're off age or not. People don't get 'children's' airfares after they're like 13 or something.

So it is possible this happened, although a tad unlikely.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. It's been a couple of years since I've been around, but I really do believe they all love and care for each other. They have a weird take on family, but they're not a normal family, so what are ya gonna do. The kids are a bit weird but they were pretty sweet. I really do believe willow is over the whole "child star" thing.
But they're also very concerned with the "Smith machine." They're totally scientologists. And they really do believe good publicity can change everything.

  40. I bought a bag of Cadbury mini chocolates at the duty free leaving Heathrow once and that was put in a clear plastic bag and stapled shut. If you show up at Customs with an opened bag they will hassle you about it, if you get a clerk who wants to be bothered. I can only imagine how they are about the alcohol.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I can't bring more than 100ml of my shampoo on a plane but alcohol is fine after security checks? I feel like that's still a major risk in the wrong hands.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Sandy, I'm completely unclear on whether you're being serious about Rob arguing with Kimmy and storming out, or playing to our own special CDaN Klan friends.

  43. Derek I'm trying to find a story which says who Kanyes best man was. The closest Ive come so far was something that said while JayZ was his best man, he thought this whole wedding was a complete joke.
And of course he didn't show up.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Alita no joke--they had a fight about his weight and he left because he felt he didn't fit in with the rest of them. She thought he was fat and didn't do enough to improve his appearance.

    ReplyDelete
  45. From my own (not very extensive, but still) travel experiences - anything you purchase after going through TSA is fine on board. You could buy vodka at the duty-free shop, stick it in your purse (or pour it in a water bottle in the restroom, E has hinted that happens a lot), and the eyelash batting would be minimal.

The key here is that the kid got the booze at a duty free shop. So someone else bought it or the clerk was pretty stupid and didn't realize you get on a lovely federal watchlist if you violate federal laws as a cleared airport employee. And flight attendants ignoring an obviously underage passenger sitting alone in first class and swigging Grey Goose is just as unlikely.

So, yeah... another celeb on a plane get drunk/stoned/sexually gratified BI.

  47. @Seven that's probably true but there are international laws in play too. If you hoard with alcohol sealed in a bag then it must stay sealed. I've yet to pass through a country that doesn't do that these days. Some countries you cannot even pass through as I found out travelling from Turkey to Finland via Germany...I lost a gorgeous bottle of vodka and from the US coming into Australia you cannot bring any booze or liquids over 100mls! You have to buy on board the plane or on arrival....

  63. Clearly, the laws vary depending upon the country.

Whenever I've bought something at Duty Free (in Canada), they either allow me to walk out with it, or hand it to me just as I'm about to board. I've never heard of them handing you your Duty Free purchases when you land.

BeckyMae - why did they confiscate your kitchen tools? Were they in your carry-on, or checked baggage?

    ReplyDelete
  64. @surfer they were in my checked luggage but I was xrayed by customs and they asked me what they were add it is illegal to bring knives or knife-like objects into Australia.

  65. Also you're right, duty free laws are so different country to country it's crazy. Also Jayden wouldn't be an Unaccompanied Minor... Airlines only classify people under 13 UM's generally but you can prices then that way if a patent wants to.

I've bought booze in duty free shops and brought them on the plane. There's also been times and countries (Switzerland, US, and Germany- I am talking to YOU booze wasting/depriving motherfuckers).
FUCK if you wanna know my most gangster flight story ever, I once opened a drink as my plane was boarding in the Bahamas. They let me line up, board, and get seated despite my drink. But hey, you can drink while driving there too...

    1. Yes, it was nuts. We called it the Great Czech Depression. For a few weeks, ALL of the booze was yanked and stopped circulating. Some disgruntled factory assholes went around poisoning random liquor bottles. 38 people died in a matter of days. The EU ntervened and demanded CZ yank all booze over 20% (so beer was still sold). That kind of order by the EU was pretty much unprecedented. Even though the ban likely saved lives, it was devastating to the peoe and their economy, which is really heavily dependent on booze sales and the party culture

I attended high school there for a few months, and worked with a couple scholars out of two universities in Prague a couple years ago.

The one thing that really struck me as odd about academia in CZ is how far to the right their social science departments/faculty swing. Like, even their poli sci and sociology departments are heavily conservative- totally different experience. It all makes sense when you think about their legacy with communism there though. They still tend to be really apprehensive about liberal ideologies and policies, anything leftist really. Crazy huh?

  82. You can buy duty free alcohol once you pass through customs and consume it. However if you dont finish the whole bottle you may have to throw it out before going through customs at your destination. It isnt uncommon practice with lost fare airlines with short flight times that do not include complementary drinks.

  83. One of the great things about Prague was how inexpensive it was, @JSierra. Even on uni student cash flow, I reckon you'd have a great time.

Wish I'd been able to get out of Prague to see the countryside - not to be. But there was so much to see in the city as it was, that I decided to ditch the side trips and just revel in the splendour. Really remarkable place.

    1. @alita: true that. CZ is still very cheap relatively. I had to TRY hard to spend more than $10 on a huge meal with drinks. Biggest cost is lodging for those without other accommodations.

      My recommendations for next time:
Karlovy Vary (beautiful spa town which has a kick ass annual film fest)
Plzeň (or other famous brewery/tour areas)
Brno (where Mendel did his genetics work)
