Your Turn
The other day I saw that the organizers of Occupy Wall Street had celebrated their second anniversary by spending $100K and buying up millions of dollars worth of student aid debt in collection and then forgiving the debt of the people so it would not affect them negatively. On their first anniversary they did the same thing with medical bills that had gone to collection. I thought it was something that was a really great idea. If you had millions to give to charity every year, what would you spend it on?
I'd spend it on free daycare for young parents to finish high school.
ReplyDeleteIdk but ummm I got some student loans they can pay off if they're looking for more ;)
ReplyDeleteThe Single Mother's Fund in the lap dance room of the local strip club.
ReplyDelete@Count LMMFAO! Gawd, you never fail to deliver. And you can take that however way you like. ;-)
DeleteI think it's a wonderful idea and I'm glad they did it.
ReplyDeleteThough I do wish they'd set a bit of the money aside for the clean up of the litter they left behind. It dilutes the message of climate change and corporate overhaul when litter the streets with Starbucks cups.
I always said if I were independently wealthy, I'd buy up all the untouched land around the world. Development has gone too far and developers are too greedy. I want to preserve areas that developers are salivating for and leave it UNTOUCHED!
ReplyDeleteI'd also like to help out families in need who suffer unexpected tragedies and are left penniless & homeless.
I'm with you-- I'd buy Madagascar...
DeleteTheefamouseperson: too late. Madagascar has only 10% of it's original rain forest left. In 1910 it was 100%. I've been there and while they are trying to preserve what's left it's been horribly deforested. I get what you're saying but there's a lot of work to be done if you want to save Madagascar.
DeleteI couldn't be confined to just one charity, but one of my main focuses would be for those who suffer with PTSD & their families.
ReplyDeleteBecause it affects those from all walks of life.
food banks
ReplyDeleteWomen's shelters, programs to provide adequate mental health care to those who can't afford it, aftercare with career counselors and life coaches for prisoners coming back into society. The system really sets people up to fail.
ReplyDeleteI would give 3k to all food service, cleaners, security who work at my building in my mom and dad' s name. I would give a chunk to st. Judes Hospital, another chunk for women oppressed throughout the world, I would train them in self defense, and build an underground network.
ReplyDeleteI would give money to St Jude's Hospital....and to food shelters...I cant stand the thought of someone being hungry and not having food especially children.
ReplyDeleteFoster kids who age out of the system and have no backup and no support. Full scholarships to university or trade school with a car thrown in. If completed successfully a bonus to use as a down payment on a house.
ReplyDeleteI would start a charity for low income caregivers and help try to alleviate any financial stress as well as offering mental health care, preventative health care, a gym membership and access to nurses who can give them a much needed break a few days a week. The charities that exist for them now suck balls and are very greedy. We need something real and tangible for these people.
ReplyDeleteCaregivers are some invisible, unsung heroes, y'all. Especially low income caregivers who have no help at all. A lot of them often lose friends and their family become strangers because they are all afraid that they will be asked for help. And people never understand their life. It's a lonely existence. I respect the fuck out of them.
So many to choose from I'd start a foundation that would allow people to write in about their hardship and how some $ could solve their problems. Some people get behind because of medical bills or unemployment and just fall out of the realm of assistance in every way. They are literally one paycheck from the street. Those people I would help.
ReplyDeleteProvide vehicles(low-cost and subsidized) and free repairs. A single parent's nightmare is kids at three different schools and the transmission just went out, bills are due next week and the bank account is empty. So off to the Payday loan place they go. It brings tears to my eyes I wish I could do this so badly.
ReplyDeleteI'd buy a couple thousand spell check and grammar check programs for Enty and his 'terns.
ReplyDeleteoccupy wall street is still a thing?!
ReplyDeleteI would start with my local food banks and battered women's shelters, and then really research more local charities in my area. Then I would look at a few bigger ones. But will send a healthy check to Stand up to cancer.
Housing to get families out of the projects. No kid shld have run the gauntlet of gang recruiters as he leaves his apt, be afraid for his life to play in the playground, sleep on the floor so they dont take a bullet from a drive by, have to go to a shitty run down school. Give people a chance, they can surprise you.
ReplyDeleteAnd by the way, each of these posts are wonderful and thoughtful and show the good hearts of most cdaners.
I'd help out the retirees who'd had their life savings stolen by scam artists and were losing or had lost their homes.
ReplyDeleteAnimal charities. I'd probably start my own, to transport animals in shelters or rescue to adoptive homes cross country. For example, California is flooded with unwanted Chihuahuas and they're scarce but in high demand in other parts of the country... I'd like to set something up to get these pups to where they're wanted.
ReplyDeleteFree and/or low cost spay and neuter - I would put a serious dent in pet over population and the number of animals put down
ReplyDeleteI'd help the homeless, battered women, set up food banks, animal rescues, set up an org with volunteers who visit the elderly and disabled, fund/help build community centers where impoverished kids and their parents could go to get a good meal, read, play, dance and create. The last one sounds weird, we're all born to creatively express ourselves. People will create, but if not given the opportunity, they do so in destructive ways (vandalism, graffiti).
