Today's Blind Items - She Got Lucky - Old Hollywood Blind
This celebrity at her peak was A+ list. Not for who she was, but for who she married. Her life has been one big lucky charm. Her entire life would have been changed if a couple of things had not happened. Over the weekend I saw a dear dear friend. She is 90 now, but is still a lot of fun to talk to, especially when she talks gossip. Back in the day she was married to the head of a studio. No one who would look at her would know that she was once the considered one of the most powerful women in Hollywood. Back in the days of screen tests she is the one who would tell her husband who to give one to and who to ignore.
Anyway, somehow we got to talking about this A+ lister who is dead and has been for decades and is still an A+ lister. My friend said that for one of his movies, the A+ lister wanted to do the casting. He had been with very few women for about a year and wanted to make up for lost time. The studio was happy to have him making a movie so obliged. They brought in about 10 A & B list actresses who they thought would be good. Our A+ lister said they were fine and he didn't care about casting for the co-star, he wanted to be part of the casting for the high school girls who were going to be in the movie. When the studio brought in 20 for him to see in a group casting he about lost his mind and would disappear every 30 minutes or so to take care of his needs on his own. He was sweating the whole time and fidgeting and wanted one on one interviews with each teen. The studio told him ok and he took each teen to a room where he would talk to them for a couple of minutes. Some though took much longer. Some interviews would take 15-20 minutes or even longer. Those are the ones who got cast in the movie. In the movie there are about 30 high school girls and our A+ lister had sex with each one of them. The oldest was probably 16. Yeah, he liked them young our A+ lister.
So, lets get back to the subject of the blind who got lucky. Well, she thought she was the girlfriend of the A+ lister but one of the high school girls who was 14 at the time ended up living with our A+ lister during the filming and for several months after. They were a definite thing. For three months they were together 24/7. Then the movie was released. It turns out that the 14 year old was a runaway and her parents had no idea where she had gone. Then they saw the movie and saw their daughter. They called the police in their town who called the studio who knew exactly where the 14 year old was. Some other calls were made and money was exchanged and the 14 year old was sent to live with her parents and our A+ lister was told to be more careful and to try and keep all of his girlfriends 16 and above. So, the 14 year old went back to her parents and would not let her speak to the A+ lister and turned him away when he flew once to see the teen. When the parents threatened to call the police he backed off. He went back to LA and picked up the phone and called another teen to come join him in LA. A teen he had not spoken to in the previous three months. She flew to LA and the rest is history.
Chaplin?
ReplyDeleteSorry Elvis and Priscilla being the teen?
ReplyDeleteGreat guess! With the one year he didn't have sex with many women being his time in the military (late 50s).
ReplyDeleteI think Montana got it with Elvis and Priscilla around 1959.
ReplyDeleteElvis and Priscilla?
ReplyDeleteBoo, too slow!
ReplyDeletePriscilla Presley/Elvis
ReplyDeleteoh my, sorry just saw other comments/guesses!
ReplyDeleteElvis met Priscilla on a military base while he was in the Army, serving in Germany. She was 14, but her dad was stationed on the base. So this is not them.
ReplyDeleteWhoever enables stuff like this needs to be tossed in prison.
ReplyDeleteCC, I think Priscilla could be the second teen who he had not seen in 3 months.
ReplyDeleteNow THIS is a blind item!
ReplyDeleteElvis and Priscilla met when she was 14 and he was stationed in Germany. Her father was in the Air Force. They met through the military.
ReplyDeletePriscilla had never been to Hollywood before meeting Elvis, so no.
ReplyDeleteI do think it's Chaplin--trying to make it fit for The Gold Rush.
ReplyDeleteTopper, no where does it say that teen #2 was in LA before he flew her out there. He shacked up with runaway teen #1, her parents stopped it, then he called teen #2 and brought her to LA.
ReplyDeleteCilla is the second teen he called to join him after not seeing him for months. She would have been with her family on the base where she met Elvis.
ReplyDeleteIt's interesting that he liked them so young but had Priscilla's hair clothes and makeup look like a frumpy frou.
Elvis, because of his celebrity, was able to convince Pricilla's father, a major at the time, to allow Pricilla to live with Elvis because he sold the major on the fact that Elvis' mom was living with Elvis at Graceland. He promised Pricilla's dad, that he would make sure Pricilla finished high school.
ReplyDeleteThat's the story I heard when I visited Graceland back in 1987 and I am sticking to it.
I read it as both girls were in the movie with him. whoops.
ReplyDeleteHowever, I still don't think it's them because according to every report I've read on their relationship (her auto-biography and many of his biographies) she moved to Memphis after he convinced her parents that she would be chaperoned by and live with his parents in Memphis, which she did for a bit before moving into Graceland proper. I'm not saying he was faithful to her all that time they were dating, but if it is supposed to be them, this blind is really incorrect on a lot of facts/timing.
I'm with ya, David!
ReplyDeleteIncorrect? But that never happens! /s
ReplyDeleteErroll Flynn?
ReplyDeleteAccording to Wikipedia, Priscilla saw Elvis during Christmas of '62 and came to stay for good in March '63 (approx. 3 months) Could the movie be "Blue Hawaii"? It seems there were a lot of young girls in that one. It was released in November '61, which would've given time for the drama with the first teen to play out.
ReplyDeletePriscilla didn't move in with Elvis until 1961-62
ReplyDeletelike this guess.
ReplyDeletethe girl being Lita Grey, who was originally cast for 'The Gold Rush' but was replaced by Georgia Hale. Chaplin also tested Louise Brooks, Myrna Loy, Carole Lombard, Janet Gaynor, Joan Crawford and Fay Wray for the female lead after he fired Lita.
Cybill Shepherd & Elvis Presley. Or Chaplin and 1000 girls. He was a madman. Love his stuff, think he was a nutjob.
ReplyDeleteYes - that's what I thought too. Priscilla was the one who he called after 3 months of not seeing her with the "rest being history." Now I wonder who the 14 year old was that he lived with while filming. Hmmmm.....
ReplyDeletechanging my guess to Elvis and Priscilla...
ReplyDeleteElvis wanted a young, good Christian girl like his mother to marry. 'cough' ? Chaplin wanted somewhat the same; young and dumb.. but pliable.. to corrupt and not marry them.. Errol Flynn liked younger girls too. Parents or guardians encouraged them to go after rich men, live in luxury them perhaps, marry well and the parents and public Chaplin actually preferred to mould the 'clay' into the shape he most desiredwere outraged, acted shocked when they were caught.
ReplyDeletePaulette Goddard was a child model who debuted in "The Ziegfeld Follies" at the age of 13. She gained fame with the show as the girl on the crescent moon, and was married to a wealthy man by the time she was 16. After her divorce she went to Hollywood in 1931, where she appeared in small roles in pictures for a number of studios. A stunning natural beauty, Paulette could mesmerize any man she met, a fact she was well aware of. One of her bigger roles in that period was as a blond "Goldwyn Girl" in the Eddie Cantor film The Kid from Spain (1932). In 1932 she met Charles Chaplin, and they soon became an item around town. He cast her in Modern Times (1936), which was a big hit, but her movie career was not going anywhere because of her relationship with Chaplin. They were secretly married in 1936, but the marriage failed and they were separated by 1940., as he was very vain, selfish, short tempered and treated women he couldn't order about and mold like clay to his likes poorly..
Well that reply messed up.. I don't know what went wrong.. My keyboard must be haunted..
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was Chaplin or Flynn, but I like the Elvis and Cilla guess too. Pricilla fits best for the surviving spouse part of the blind.
ReplyDeleteGood point- And chaplin's final wife- Oona O'Neill, daughter of playwright Eugene O'Neill, was 16 or 17 when they met. They married when she was 18 and he was nearly 40 years her senior. Interestingly, the relationship caused her dad to disown her. They stayed married until his death and she had 8 children with him.
ReplyDeleteI might call that clay.
My first thought was Elvis. I'm intrigued by the Chaplin guesses but the blind doesn't seem to read like the subject is THAT old. It sounds like the blind occurred when Enty's friend was in the business. If Enty's friend is 90 and was powerful way back when, I would think her "prime" would have been 40-55 years ago, which would put Elvis in the window.
ReplyDeleteI believe it's Elvis, though the part about the runaway may be hyperbole.

It wasn't Elvis and Priscilla. Elvis met her at the base, not in a movie. In this blind they met while the person was casting for the movie. Priscilla eventually moved in with Elvis but with her parents permission, the one in the blind didn't have the parent's permission. And for the record his mom died before she moved in. I don't know if Elvis was ever considered A+ for movies. I'm thinking this has to be an older star of yesteryear. But for the life of me I can't think who it is.
ReplyDeletePriscilla Presley.
ReplyDeleteTeen no. 1 he met at casting. Teen no. 2 was Priscilla. Or at least that's who this blind is supposed to be about.
ReplyDeleteI believe the actor is Errol Flynn. The woman is the wife of Warner Brothers Studio head, Jack Warner.
