He once had the highest name recognition in soccer. I think Crispy Ronaldo might be neck and neck with Beckham at this point, though.
Becker. He is a frequent guest speaker abroad ( don't know about US).
when I think of who has The Highest Name Recognition In Soccer I still immediately hit the button with:
Who Is PELE !
I was gonna say same thing@BA! Inspired so many of his native Brazilians and so many future generations of footballers globally
This is not Boris Becker. He was a former world number 1 but the one tennis player with the highest name recognition IS roger federer. Record holder of everything so far. This blind is not someone from tennis.
Yes, he definitely has the highest name recognition in his sport, at least in the U.S.
Roger Federer has the highest ever name recognition in tennis, but it says former and he's still playing.
huh..& I think like Arthur Ashe & such.... pre-tweet world am i....(*sigh)
Well, yeah - but how long ago was that? Enty thinks "back in the day" is the 1990s.
Pele--> Beckham --> Ronaldo in chronological order.
Totally unrelated: I work with a son of one of Pele's teammates, Gylmar dos Santos Neves. This son is a surgeon in the northeastern US, now. Gilmar died a couple of years ago.
Beckam, annd i have read somewhere else that he and his wife are soon divorcing, it's just the usual expect to make the announcement till everything is settled.
yeah I read that too maybe in BLIND GOSSIP.. perhaps? not sure.
- It was BG. *-Blind Gossip 08/27 #1-*
Diego Maradona
Wayne Gretzky.
Derek you wouldn't guess him because he isn't a foreign born athlete where you live. Pele is the greatest known soccer player ever not Beckham--Pele is the Babe Ruth of soccer. Rod Laver may be the greatest tennis player or Arthur Ashe..
Yeah I guess I think of U.S.players for "former" like Andre Agassi,Arthur Ashe,Sampras,..For foreigners i thought Bjorn Borg cuz he was hawt..& currently I think Nadal before Federer so I think I go by who I like physically..is that a bad thing? I think not.
so i think talent, celebrity & influence for U.S.players &Physical Looks mostly for others-damn..i should think about that.
@Derek, honestly cannot see him speaking anywhere. Love him though. Just love him.
People, I am going to need audio that Becks is a public speaker.
I disagree, we are talking about different times, Pelè at times was very known, but mostly by soccer fans, Beckam is very known not only by soccer fans, but by Spice Girls fans, mode fans, celebrity fans and gossip, not to count, with the Comunication medium we have now there is simply no comparition in popularity terms, Sad to say, for example, i bet that rn KIM KARDASHIAN is likely more known that Pelè by the most of people.
While if we are talking about talent...then Pelè, of course.
Pele was known by EVERYONE. I have never played soccer in my life, but in the late seventies/early eighties, you couldn't get away from Pele's name. That said, Beckham does seem like a plausible choice as well - once you have a movie about soccer with your name in the title, that says something.
Gretzky for hockey, MacEnroe for tennis... Jordan for basketball. About all I got.
Maybe now but back in the day it was Borg, McEnroe, even Jimmy Connors who all had bigger name recognition than Federer. Tennis has been popular for a long time.
Perhaps younger people don't know Pele but when he was playing Pele had Beckham level fame and beyond, bordering on Ali. He was huge all over the world.
Becks was my first thought, he's probably the most famous athlete in the world right now. Christiano is famous but not as famous as Beckham. Plus Becks is a known player and Christiano is supposedly gay (I don't know, it's a persistent rumor).
Could be Johnny Mac (an asshole), Borg (a freak), or Becker (another freak). I would think Connors is too old and not famous enough anymore to pull a college student.
Gretsky would surprise me, he's so dull - but you never know.
So in conclusion - I have no fucking idea.
The first name I thought of is Gretzky but it's hard to see him do something like this.
I think Enty probably has another awful description of an athlete here. Remember, he thinks Lamar Odom is A + SMDH
Serena Williams is THEE biggest name in Tennis, EVER.
As far as I know David Beckham has never done a speaking gig at a university (clue: student). Have you guys actually listened to him speak? Tennis, could be a good guess. It must be somebody (foreign born), who is also well known in US. How about golf?
