This hugely popular tabloid has a quota system in place of how many times each year a person of color can appear on their cover and how people of color can never appear on the cover in consecutive issues. Lesser known tabloids have even stricter controls and only feature people of color they feel have been "white-washed" enough to appear on a cover.

Sorry for so many comments. But I'm wondering what their consumer research is telling them as far as who buys their magazine and what kind of issues sell more.

I don't have any trouble believing this. That doesn't mean it's true, just plausible.
Is "People" a tabloid? The content is the same as any tabloid's but I always think of "tabloid" as the Enquirer or one of the non-glossy supermarket rags.
I'll go with the spelling-challenged "The Enquirer" as my guess.

The NY Daily News, NY Post, Daily Mail and the Sun are also considered tabloids.

Enty repeats tabloid so I assume he is using it correctly. I will say the Star tabloid because they use more celebrity type covers,the Enquirer does some news type stories and they put Bill Cosby and OJ on the cover all the time! Also stories about Whitney and family. In other words, negative stories.

They can tell each month what editions sell more by how many mags get sold. And it;s the cover that usually gets those editions sold to the people browsing the mag shelf at the check-out line at the store. So they can tell which covers sell better. I think there is also an informal list out there about which celebs sell the most mags based on their cover. Jennifer Anniston was the highest at one point, probably along with Angie.. Shame about the colour thing but Oprah could be on the cover, but some other face on it will sell more copies. Unless it is a possible week if Oprah is caught doing something scandelous, like coming out. Coming out ones seem to be big sellers interestingly enough.
How many times has a white person been on Ebony Magazine? I'm going to start a magazine called Ivory Magazine. No black people are allowed on it. It's this stupid kind of segregation, and this discriminatory, childish stupidity that tears people apart. I view people as people. Underneath our skin, we all look the same.
It's a shame that this country has turned into black against white. This country is far more than white people and black people. There are other races too. I've never seen such segregation and anger, when this country should be bonding against the real enemy. ISIS and other islamic radicals. The US has become the country of hate and anger, as opposed to the country of unity and pride.
I feel the same way but in all honesty how are black celelbrities going to get in/on magazines unless their Denzel or Halle if them. Alot of those "black" magazines, colleges and tv stations were created because blacks weren't allowed in other magazines. While we have changed some it's still a issue. I would like to see Ebony and other affiliates like that welcome other people though. There is also a People "Latina" and "Latina" magazine but you don't hear the fuss about that though.
