Today's Blind Items - The Garage Band
This A list band has been around for quite a while and their fame and recognition in particular have increased over the past decade. Back in the day, these guys were just like every other wannabe band. Relegated to a garage in a not so safe neighborhood that was so dangerous they had to lock the garage even while they were playing for fear someone would break in and rob them while they were playing.
These guys were much like other bands just starting out who go on and on about their craft and not interested in making money. The whole usual thing about just wanting to make music for the people. Trying to light a spark among the few loyal fans who came to see them perform at a steady stream of the worst clubs in earth, they encouraged fans to record the shows and spread the tapes around to other potential fans.
These guys were great and very underground. One of the members of this band, who I will call Mr. S, was, quite simply, a musical genius. It was his creative vision, talent and refusal to compromise that was responsible for the band's early breakthroughs. Unfortunately, though, there was another band member who was very jealous of Mr. S and his creativity. I'll call this guy Mr. M. He was (and is) a monumental jerk- and contrary to the underground reputation of the band, was hungry for fame and wealth from day one. He did a good job at hiding it though, and played along with the band's narrative, but greed and power were always primary his mind.
Part of Mr. M's jealousy towards Mr. S was also centered around Mr. S's girlfriend. She was also an extremely talented artist and was well liked by pretty much everyone in their early scene. The story that has circulated around for years is that Mr. M also had feelings for this woman. Very strong feelings --you know-- it's the classic story. When Mr. M confessed his feelings to this woman, she basically told him to f**k off. She hated him and had no idea why he would even feel that way about her since she made her hatred of him pretty plain to him as often as possible.
This rejection lead to even more issues between Mr. S and Mr. M. Mr. M demanded a bigger piece of the pie for things he only minimally contributed to and also tried to sabotage a lot of Mr. S's creative process. And the problem is that Mr. S., being the sensitive and creative personality type, just was not good at fighting back against Mr. M. Not a good situation. Anyway, right around the time that this band had one of it's first commercial successes, something bad happened to Mr. S. The official story floating around about the incident has been consistent for years, but there have always been questions about what actually happened. The questions mostly center around Mr. M and his actions at the time of this incident, but since the situation took place such a long time ago, we'll probably never really know the whole story.
People in the band's circle generally believe Mr. M was responsible. After this incident with Mr. S, the band became even more commercially and financially successful which became the primary motivating factor for the band. The band has completely discarded their prior ideals and have also stopped caring about their fans. Sadly, their fans have no idea how much the band members really loathe them. Some of the band's early fans, though, have figured out how disingenuous these guys have become and no longer support them.
Many other fans though continue to believe the band will remain true to their roots. That myth could very well be shattered very soon. Mr. M has demanded a lot of money for a tour that is being planned, which will translate into some seriously astronomical ticket prices for fans. Even more interesting, is that rumors are flying that the band will be using backing tracks for the first time on this tour as well. With many pop stars these days, this is the norm-- but with this band, it would have to be hidden from fans and promoters at all costs. So not only would concert-goers be paying a huge price to see these guys live, but some of the stuff they perform might very well be canned tracks. What Mr. M doesn't know though is that some of the band's crew are getting sick and tired of the crappy treatment they've received as a result of the band's greed, and in particular, hate Mr. M. So it would not surprise me if there was an on-purpose "glitch" at a large show with one of the backing tracks. Since everyone has a smart phone to record audio and video of concerts these days, this will spell disaster for this band and their fan base when this is exposed. The other problem is that some of the crew are also rumored to have Mr. M on tape saying some very politically incorrect things. If this also gets released, it will also expose the fact that the band's narrative is nowhere near what they want people to think it is either. Public relations disaster.
U2 - Bono and The Edge.
ReplyDeleteoh please let this be metallica. their ticket prices are upwards of 250$ for their tour coming up
ReplyDeleteoh yeah, this sounds about right!
ReplyDeleteLinkin Park?
ReplyDeleteu2 is permanent A and has been bigger bigger in the past than they are now.
ReplyDeleteNo idea
ReplyDeleteGreenday
ReplyDeletethis is a good guess too
ReplyDeleteMaroon 5
ReplyDeleteThanks Ryan-ex GF could be this girl Amanda he wrote several songs about right before"Dookie" catapulted them to fame-they are on the album I think...this decade brought back a lot of fans/fame because of American Idiot album and musical
ReplyDeleteNope, bono's wife alison is rumoured to date models on the d.l. while running the family and hubby does what he does... Meanwhile bassist adam used to turn up at shows high a kite so the roadie played his stuff while he pretended. Plus they sold out decades ago.
ReplyDeleteTricia, my first guess was Green Day too. It's not U2, wish it was Metallica but I don't think so.
ReplyDeleteHey cheese fries-when I think garage band I think of them-and BJA definitely a visionary/driving force(kinda like Billy's corgan of Smashing Pumpkons but they don't add up I don't think like GD
ReplyDeleteOnly for the VIP seats which is a cheaper rate than other bands for their VIP seats. Plus their tour already started
ReplyDeleteOne Direction.
ReplyDeleteBlack Eyed Peas.
ReplyDeleteMaroon 5 was who I was thinking of. It blows my mind how Adam Levine sounds just like Justin Bieber right now. It makes me laugh when their current songs are on the radio.
ReplyDeleteU2 would be considered A-plus-plus to me. I don't think it's them. Any more dirt on them though, please share. I'm going to see them this summer.
I agree with Metallica. They sold out when they were the loudest voices against Napster. Lars is a Dick with a Capital D.
ReplyDeleteU2's has retained road crews for years. The stage manager for the Joshua Tree anniversary tour is the same guy as they had for the original Joshua Tree tour. I just heard that on the radio lol.
My first thought was Red Hot Chili Peppers...
ReplyDeleteThe Stones? Imagine Mick Lip Syncing after all these years...
ReplyDeleteMr. S = Dave Mustaine
ReplyDeleteMr. M = Lars Ulrich
No one is Maroon 5 could possibly in a million years be called a musical genius.
ReplyDeleteHoly crap, I take back my prior comment. Mr. S = Cliff Burton. He died in Swedidh tour bus crash, right after Master of Puppets was released. Prior to his death, the band encouraged people to record their shows and share with friends. They didn't care about radio play, and never wanted to release a music video. Burton died, their fame exploded. "One" was the first original single released post-accident.
ReplyDeletedefinitely green day. their fame resurgence beginning in 2010 with their broadway show. mr. s - tre cool, 1st wife is an artist, mr. m - billie joe armstrong.
ReplyDeleteApparently, Lars was going to be fired after the Master of Puppets tour.
ReplyDeletehttp://consequenceofsound.net/2014/10/metallica-planned-to-fire-drummer-lars-ulrich-prior-to-death-of-cliff-burton/
Can anyone who has guessed shed some light on what they think is the terrible thing that happened to Mr. S and the role Mr. M played in that?
ReplyDeleteKat, the accident which killed Cliff was caused by black ice. Hetfield couldn't find any, though. http://ultimateclassicrock.com/metallica-bassist-cliff-burton-dies-in-a-bus-accident/
ReplyDeleteRolling Stones. Brian Jones was found dead in his pool around when Mick Jagger was ousting him from the band. They're ticket prices are ridiculous. Potential need backing tracks cause Keith's arthritis is so bad now
ReplyDeleteHope it's not Green Day. In their defense, bassist Mike Dirnt and front man Billie Joe Armstrong have been friends since 8th grade and recently ventured into business together launching a coffee company, the Oakland Coffee Works. Drummer Tré Cool and Billie Joe are godfathers for each other's children multiple times. So at least on the surface, neither band mate registers like someone in a long standing antagonistic relationship with Billie Joe.
ReplyDeleteI think this is about Metallica.
I don't think it's Metallica - no one would say "their fame and recognition in particular have increased over the past decade." Also, the blind states, "People in the band’s circle generally believe Mr. M was responsible" in some way for what happened to Mr. S. How could anyone else in the group have engineered a bus accident that would kill only one person? It seems more likely that "Mr. S" either overdosed, had a mental breakdown, or something like that.
ReplyDeleteSue, there are lingering questions about the accident, including who was driving. It could just mean some think Lars was at the wheel - not that he flipped the bus on purpose.
ReplyDeleteRight. Cliff Burton was far more talented than the average metal bassist, and Lars has always been a douche, but I don't think he was able to mastermind a crash that killed Cliff and left everyone else unharmed. Also their fame and recognition exploded in the 90's, its been stable since then. Nothing bad has happened to Green Day. I don't think any of the guesses are correct thus far, but I have no alternative to offer.
ReplyDeleteFWIW, Metallica's first EP after Burton's death was titled, "Garage Days Revisited."
ReplyDelete@Sue T was gonna add (but didn't because not certain of time frame in regards to it)but I thought it was maybe reference BJA and his overdose /suicide attempt? -he is on record saying around the bands first album or two(Nimrod-Dookie) he was in a dark place.Could also be a hindrance of his sobriety fight aka enabling
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's the Stones. The drama with girlfriends revolved around Keith & Brian, not Mick. Brian abused Anita, and Keith stole her away. Also, the Stones aren't more popular than they were back in the day, they've been huge (and had high ticket prices) for decades.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's Green Day either. I live in the East Bay -- the members of GD still live here, I'm pretty sure they got their start in a neighborhood that was not so dangerous you'd have to lock your garage *while you're playing*, and they're very involved with the community. People see them out & about. The whole "secretly hating their fans" narrative doesn't sound like GD.
ReplyDeleteIf it is supposed to be Metallica I think Enty is fudging more than a few facts (and I realize he does do that, and has every right to, based on the disclaimer on every page of the site).
ReplyDeleteOne other thing: the blind states that a tour is being planned. Metallica HAVE been on tour and have had to cancel shows due to James Hetfield's vocal problems: http://www.guitarworld.com/artist-news/metallicas-james-hetfield-under-doctors-orders-not-sing-single-note/30646
If they were going to use backing tapes, why would they go to the enormous trouble and expense of rescheduling these shows? It would be the perfect excuse to use tapes.
They are not in the same band. They were when Metallica started, but only for a few years, if that.
ReplyDelete@Rhondabear, the Ep title is probably a big clue. When someone says Garage band, people think punk,, even if not accurate.
ReplyDeleteRed Hot Chili Peppers actually isn't a bad guess, either. Maybe Flea is Mr. M (First name 'Michael') and Mr. S is their long dead founding member, Hillel Slovak. Slovak died of a Heroin overdose in 1988 before they hit it big. There is a bit in Anthony Kiedis' autobiography that notes that Hillel moved out of a house the band stayed in with his GF, because he didn't like the vibe. He even left the band for awhile, but rejoined before his OD. No mention of if this GF was an artist or not.
ReplyDeleteInterestingly enough, John Frusciante, who was HIllel's literal and spiritual successor in the group, was also known for his 'artistic' sensibilities, and struggled with the limelight (he left during the height of their popularity in the 90's and receded into his own drug fueled seclusion). Frusciante and Slovak actually have a bond through a woman named Toni Oswald, who would become Frusciante's muse for several years. Oswald was a performance artist and had been close with Slovak (not sure if she was the GF), but abandoned him when he got into heroin.
Anyway, they fit in a lot of ways, except the 'dangerous neighborhood' part (they grew up around Fairfax, La Brea, and West Hollywood).
Wild, probably completely wrong guess here, I have no idea about the history of the band members, Radiohead?
ReplyDeletelol when was Maroon 5 seen as an "underground " band Jesus Christ with some of these guesses.
ReplyDeleteIf it's Metallica the part about the girlfriend being a well respected artist as well doesn't really fit - Hetfield's been married to the same woman since 97 and she's doesn't seem to have any career of note, and Lars has been married 2 times to non famous women, but his third wife was Connie Nielson, an actress, but that was in 2004, so it wouldn't fit the "early days" time frame
So unless someone can make the early days well respected some type of artist girl friend fit it can't be Metallica
Hmmmm wait Mr. S had the girlfriend actually, and he's the one not mentioned after whatever "the incident" was so if he died this makes this even harder - entry doesn't specify if he's alive or even still in the band because after whatever happened all he talks about is the hated 2nd guy.
ReplyDeleteIf Mr. S was the driving creative force behind the band and he's not in it anymore...or even still alive...this doesn't seem like it should be so hard ...what band was kicking around awhile but only really got attention in the last decade?!?
Muse?
ReplyDeleteSounds like it's supposed to be Metallica.
ReplyDeleteHetfield just moved to Colorado, and if you told me he was a Trump/Tea Party guy it wouldn't be a shock....but then it shouldn't shock their fans either. Lars is known for being a prick too. There's already a film about their own weirdness, to the point where this isn't even gossip, aside from the death involved.
Green Day don't fit. The girlfriend and wife situation doesn't match the timeline.
Metallica was huge in the 80's and 90's. The notion that they only got big in the last decade doesn't fit at all. And their most 'critically' successful music (the stuff by which they are known) was Master of Puppets, and none of the potential "Mr. S" were there when that was made. I don't think they really fit, except for people thinking Lars is an a-hole and them having a big tour this summer.
ReplyDeleteOK, we all know Enty's music blinds suck and the guesses are worse.
ReplyDeleteNo way this is Metallica or U2.
I agree this is Red Hot Chili Peppers. Mr. S is/was Hillel Slovak who ODed. Anthony Kiedis is most likely Mr. M although Flea's real name is Michael so maybe him.
w/ u: lol+ & more lol abt "maroon 5"; adam knows jason segel & jake gyllenhaal from kindergarten: 'nepotistic' boys from a great neighborhood of LA (i hate his falsetto)....
ReplyDeleteP.S. RHCP....
rhoda, i think you are onto something. i did some more digging since i am on a roll this week. i am thinking that the metallica guess is most plausible.
ReplyDeletemr s: sweden/CB
mr m: marin/JH
JH did an interview recently that sorta ties into some of this stuff
http://www.theblaze.com/news/2016/12/21/metallicas-james-hetfield-says-he-moved-out-of-san-fran-because-of-the-citys-elitist-attitude/
Except that Slovak and Keidis were the best of friends from the beginning, and there's no report of Slovak's girlfriend being "an extremely talented artist". The only mention I can even find of her says that Slovak moved out of the house the band shared to move in with her. Apparently she was out of the picture by the time he died because he overdosed alone in an apartment he rented after distancing himself from the group in an effort to quit drugs ironically enough.
ReplyDeleteThat's a response to peopleselbow's comment.
ReplyDeleteno one would say the RHCP's "fame and recognition in particular have increased over the past decade"
ReplyDeleteIn case anyone wants to keep going with this, here's a SPIN list of the top 50 current rock bands: http://www.spin.com/2015/10/the-50-best-rock-bands-right-now/
Mr. M could be 'Flea,' whose first name is 'Michael.' Also, Toni Oswald (who I don't know for sure was Hillel's GF, but was definitely a close friend and also a performance artist) fits the GF bill for Hillel. Given that Entry often blurs storylines, it's possible that there is a John Frusciante/Hillel mix in this story (Frusciante was an RHCP fanboy who modeled his guitar playing after Hillel, and was, himself, an artistic soul who 'left' the group when they became big time, returning after years of Heroin addiction in the early aughts to create some of RHCP's most popular albums, then leaving again a few years ago).
ReplyDeleteExcept...JH really, REALLY loved Cliff. More than the bromance that evolved of him and Lars. And, how the f you do a bus accident where your arch nemesis is the only one who died? A lot of stretching by enty. Oh, and I just bought tickets. Cheaper than GnR...?
ReplyDeleteNo, but their popularity did hit it's peak in the 2000's when Frusciante returned to the band. That was nearly 20 years after they had started as a garage band that used to play small clubs. I was 15 when I saw them play at a place called "One Step Beyond" in San Jose, California, which could fit maybe 150 people max. Blood, Sugar, Sex Magic was their first 'crossover' album, but Frusciante left the band and their albums with Arik Marshall and David Navorro were crap and they failed to capitalize on that early popularity until Frusciante returned for Califonication. They hit their artisitc peak with Stadium Arcadium in 2006 (they even won 5 Grammys).
ReplyDeleteStretch. They draw cards who was going to take the bunk. It could have been anyone who could have died then. Besides, there is NO way you can flip the bus so that THAT person at THAT particular bunk would get under the bus and all. If you know what I mean.
ReplyDeleteMetallica s&m album
ReplyDeleteLars ulrich 1st wife was skylar who dumped Matt Damon in college and was the Minnie inspiration in good will hunting
All i got is Mr m master of puppets and Mr s Swedish death
FFS. These guesses.
ReplyDeleteI thought Enty meant "garage" as in the '90s genre?
Dude: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sYsw0KVRjCM
ReplyDeleteNot sure any of the guesses fit all the clues...I'll try to summarize some of the details:
ReplyDeleteA list band, assuming from USA, been around awhile with increasing fame in the past 10 years. From a dangerous neighborhood. Encouraged bootlegging of their shows. Very underground (maybe indie/punk?). Now they are planning a tour although they loathe their fans.
Mr. S: A creative musical genius responsible for the band's breakthrough success; girlfriend was a talented artist liked by everyone; something bad happened to him around the time of the band's initial success - it "took place such a long time ago, we'll probably never really know the whole story" - it sounds like he is dead.
Mr. M: a fame-hungry jerk, but hid it well; jealous of Mr. S & had strong feelings for his girlfriend but got shot down because she hated him; could be responsible for what happened to Mr. S & his actions at the time of the incident were suspicious; demanding big $ for new tour featuring canned tracks; said un-pc things that have been recorded that are against the band's narrative.
Sorry if I missed an major points & for my typing : )
AGC says Metallica. They've been wrong a lot before eg. De Andre Jordan when it was Paul George but this could fit.
ReplyDeleteAgain, Enty's music blinds suck
Ding ding!!
ReplyDeleteMr. M, Marilyn Manson? Known to have been very fame hungry from early on. And Mr. S, his former guitarist Scott Putesky who wrote most of their first album and was forced out of the band because Manson and Twiggy were jealous of his musical talent? Manson has also put on some lackluster live performances over the past few years so it wouldn't be surprising if backing tracks were used on the next tour.
ReplyDeletePigpen. Girlfriend was Janis Joplin. Asshole is Bob Weir
ReplyDeleteWell this is a juicy one. Billy corgan dated Courtney Love. Courtney has told Dave Grohl many times he's a shit. I also thought about the chili peppers and how they're a different band now. Also the original guitarist died after scoring with Kiedis. Yet they didn't find him for days.. Janis and Bob Weir could also fit. Black ice story made no sense then for Metallica. First albums made a record then something happened. Could it be pink Floyd's roger waters and Syd Barrett? I'd say the stones or dead with 50th anniversaries getting their clothing into walmarts and a few documentaries by Scorsese
ReplyDeleteSo following that theory
ReplyDeleteMr S Kurt cobain Seattle w/ Courtney love as artist girlfriend
Kurt od suspicious circumstances
But they were famous before kurt died
A Mr M I David grohl foo fighters later launched..
That's
My favorite part of Some Kind of Monster is when Lars's dad tells Lars that their new album sucks.
ReplyDelete@Yep, I read it! My thoughts, the only thing I thought About the Metallica bus crash, maybe Lars knew the driver was drinking, maybe drank with him? Other band members insisted they smelled alcohol on him. The RedHot Chili Peppers, scoring drugs with the Other band member. The red herrings or biggest clues are about the girlfriend and being more popular now than before. Enty might mean the most money they made or biggest tour. Big record sales today are unlikely.
ReplyDeleteThat's true about the record sales too. I have read so many times the last 10 years about how bands are making more money from tours than from album & single sales. There were acts that could never tour & still be extremely rich because they sold tons of albums, but that has not been the case for awhile. It could also be that they have become more famous around the world instead of most of their fame being in the US/Canada/UK. Like in China, Brazil, or other countries. The way Enty writes about Mr. M is that he's despised by everyone & known as an a-hole, but like I said I have heard from many people that Anthony & Flea are really nice, but Lars? Giant a-hole, so out of the 3 most popular guesses Metallica would be the best fit. I still think it's going to be a band no one would consider A list except Enty.
ReplyDeleteMetallica was inducted into the Hall of Fame 9 years ago, which could be why enty said their fame had grown in the last decade.
ReplyDeleteAgain: nobody said Mr M purposely killed anyone, only that he may have been involved (accidental vs. intentional).
No way it's Metallica. Cliff Burton was a great bassist but James Hetfield has always written all the songs and riffs. Hetfield is the musical genius of the band so he would have no reason to be jealous of the other members. Kirk Hammet is a very quiet shy guy who just goes along with whatever James and Lars want to do.
ReplyDeletei still like your theory rhodabear. its the most plausible to me.
ReplyDeleteIf it is Metallica, the bad guy could only be Lars,as some have stated, here was talk he would be fired after the tour Cliff died during. When I looked up Cliff Burton, I noticed Lars was missing from pictures of Cliff's last day. Could not find anything about his personal relationships though.
ReplyDeleteMr. S -- James "The Rev" Sullivan; Mr. M -- M Shadows. Band - Avenged Sevenfold. I don't think Leana MacFadden was a brilliant artist though. Also, don't know if M Shadows was jealous, but do know that the Rev was the genius of the band when they started.
ReplyDeleteCould it be Weezer? They had a song on their first album called "In the Garage" which was about the garage they practiced in at the house the band shared and it's possible it was in a bad part of L.A. too. Matt Sharp the original bass player was their secret weapon and had a hand in writing some of the best songs on their first two albums. Rivers Cuomo threw him out of the band because he was jealous. Rivers is also known to be very fame hungry as can be witnessed by how badly the band has sold out over the past 15 years.
ReplyDeleteThe blind just says M was likely responsible for his death, not that he set out to kill S. Maybe he was the driver, too juch speed, lost control and M was the one who died.
ReplyDeleteMetallica 100%. Or else I will lick Lars Ulrich's taint
ReplyDeleteIt's not Metallica
ReplyDeleteGreen Day isn't close to "A or even A+" status. Only in Oakland, Berkeley and SF. Everywhere else they're just annoying. I live in the East Bay as well and know this to be true. My guess is Metallica, Lars and Cliff, and Metallica is definitely A+ list.
ReplyDeleteWhy is it somehow shocking for James Hetfield to be a Trump supporter and/or tea party supporter? Change is good, so how is that bad? It just means he's progressive.
ReplyDeleteNirvana. Kurt Cobain. Courtney Love. Dave Grohl morphed grunge band into Foo Fighters. It fits. Courtney and Dave hate each other to this day.
ReplyDeleteMetallica who lost Cliff Burton in 86, whose death was "caused" by Kirk Hammett. His girlfriend was Corinne Lynn, but not sure she was a musician too. The fans think they are selling out. But they've been A list for well over 2 decades.
ReplyDeleteI live in the Bay Area and Hammett's still hanging around. He throws big parties in SF periodically. He was really pushing horror and the book he made. I was given an autographed copy, which I gave away.
I love the music blinds!
I don't think this is Nirvana. Love is not considered "extremely talented and liked by everyone," Lol!
ReplyDeleteBesides, the circumstances surrounding Cobain never pointed to Grohl, they all pointed to Love. I think they despise each other because he thinks/knows she was behind it.
It's not Nirvana. They were already fairly established before Grohl even joined the band. And they haven't had any increased success in the past ten years because the band died with Kurt in 1994. It's also still not Metallica so stop with that.
ReplyDeleteI read it an appreciate your research.
ReplyDeleteJust remember Enty's bullshit about Black Sabbath, who never had multiple #1 albums, and Van Halen, who never cut a show short with DLR or Sammy. They did with Cerone, which would make the blind more B.S.
Thanks! I didn't know Enty said that about Black Sabbath & Van Halen. It shouldn't surprise me that Enty's doing zero research for his blinds! :)
ReplyDeleteHi I'm Brian from the U.K. Long time listener..first time caller
ReplyDeleteAs a metal head and OG Metallica fan this is one of the best blinds ever. I know the garage reference and that fact they have an album called S & M make Metallica the bookmakers favorites, the rest is a little hazy. Even Lars knows he's a prick and responsible for most of the poor decisions the band during the career , he never had any part to play in what happened to Cliff. They drew cards , he picked the ace of spades ironically and he chose Kirk's bunk. Also the band have had more highs and than lows but early 90's they were colossal and at their peak and have never really went away. They always sold out tours and have a massive fan base. They haven't had a rebirth on the last 10 years. I thought of other sad events involving the band and he may have played part in Jason quitting but I always thought he blamed James. There's the Napster bullshit and they lost a shitload of $$ on Through The Never too. I also read that as much as Lars chats shit and likes to run the ship, James only takes so much of it and he once picked him up and threw him through his drum kit They have also had the same crew for years and they're suppose to be loyal but I have also heard Lars hasn't got the chops to play the faster material and even uses more than one take in the studio, so some of the stuff off the new album will kill him if he tried to play it live. Yeah it's a dilly of a pickle. I'm going to throw TOOL into the ring. Maynard seems to have turned into a real arse hole and makes no secret of his disdain for over zealous fan of the band. He seems to show a lot of disdain towards his band mates too and seems to like being center stage more than he makes out. Adam is the artistic visionary and driving force of the band. He's a perfectionist and the new album won't see light of day till he thinks it's right. He fits the description of Mr.S to a T and they don't exactly come across as friends. They're about to announce a tour too. And finally for your consideration my I offer Pearl Jam. Sometime within the last 10 years ago Eddie Vedder said goodbye to his soul and went from being the shy punker kid into some hybrid Bruce Springsteen and Bono wannabe, smiley glad handing his way up the entertainment totem pole and he's totally took control of the band out of the hands of Stone and Jeff. The albums have gone progressively downhill the more his name is on the song credits and he does come across as the type of guy who'ld try to fuck his friends girlfriend. OK it's maybe wishful thinking on my behalf but he's sold his soul or been anointed somewhere along the road so if anyone has any juice of EV I'm all ears.
ACDC?
ReplyDeleteMr. S = Bon Scott
Mr. M = Angus or Malcom Young?
Definitely have unanswered questions regarding Bon's death, and they hired a new singer and put out a record pretty darn quick.
I don't know that Malcolm is up for touring though since he's supposed to be suffering from some sort of dementia.
This blind is crazy frustrating.
Thanks for putting a new guess with Pearl Jam,Any tragedy with them though?
ReplyDeletesome things Enty says are red herrings, others just plain mistakes.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you consider a red herring? To me the 2 examples from peopleselbow sound like mistakes & not red herrings, but what is your take on it?
ReplyDeleteLooking at Pearl Jam's discography I do have to admit the songs I tend to like the most do not have Eddie listed as a writer on the song. He has always done a few songs here or there on the early albums & I do like some of those songs. I might be in the minority, but I enjoyed the self titled album in '06 & Backspacer. Or I liked more than 1 song on each album, which sadly has become the way I judge if an album is good or not. I have not listed to Lightning Bolt, but looking at the writing credits Eddie is not listed on any of the songs on Wikipedia.
ReplyDeleteWhat I do not agree with is that Eddie has "sold his soul." I honestly do not know what things he has done that would make you think that. Is it Eddie going to Cubs games? He's always done that. Is it Eddie going to former President Obama's last speech? He's always been politically conscious. I do not hear Pearl Jam songs playing for car commercials & I do not see Eddie doing commercials selling his favorite soda. I do not mean for this to sound like I am attacking you. I truly want to know what I am not seeing or hearing about him.
As for the blind I do not think Pearl Jam fits because there was not a tragedy that I think fits this blind. Someone did say above that Enty throws red herrings into blinds. If that's the case this blind could be about anyone.
Brian Johnson (who took over for Bon) just left the band last year due to hearing problems. They were in the middle of a tour & he had to stop. They finished the tour using Axl Rose & according to the Wikipedia on them the current members include Angus, Chris Slade, Stevie Young, & Axl Rose.
ReplyDeleteMalcolm is no longer in the band & they admitted his dementia is severe. He could no longer tour & from what I have read about the band Malcolm was the real brains behind the band from a business standpoint & from a musical one. They also had a former drummer that was arrested for trying to hire a hitman to kill his wife or an ex wife. They have a very interesting history & within the last 2 years they opened the Grammy Awards. They very well could be the answer to this blind.
Hi Yep , Maybe I'm reaching suggesting the PJ. Other than the Roskilde tradgedy and some terrible cover versions, I've never heard of any other problems. I'm a fan honestly, over the last few weeks my conscience has been having a internal battle over not re-newing my 10 Club Membership after being a member for years. I even used to physically write to them pre-internet. I feel like a traitor. I've seen them every tour since 1996, collect the posters and shit so it hurts me throwing the boot in on a band that have been a huge part of my life. Lightening Bolt is like the last couple, pretty hit & miss. He writes half the songs, co writes the rest and even managed to include a song previously released on one of his solo albums, so they must have been struggling for material.I loved the Riot Act Tour singing wearing the Bush mask and pissing people off, all the Neo-Con artwork, it was fierce.Like you said yourself they have never been afraid to use their voice and been involved in countless good causes but something changed. I think Jeff would put his foot down if any songs were going to be used to sell hair care products or whatever as he still has a little of his old punk ethos left but I'm not so sure about. He's always been a bit of a starfucker , like you know if the band had been on tour when Lemmy died , he'd tell you his Lemmy story and how listening to Bomber saved his life as a troubled teen, or Bowie or anyone who'ld died that week ect.. He totally latched onto Johnny Ramone , the business head of the band, not Joey and inducted them into the Hall of Fame even though he had latched onto him pretty late in the day. Likewise Neil Young reached out to the other band members when they were struggling to cope with success and EV was becoming the poster boy. He took them under his wing and they toured with him as his backing band and made Mirrorball ( great album btw) but it was Ed who inducted him into the HoF . He used to hang with Mike Watt and Ian Mackaye from Minor Threat now he's hanging with Sean Penn and Bill Maher . When Temple of the Dog toured last year, he never showed up for any shows, not even to perform their biggest hit. Fans speculated he's be there for the last show in Seattle, one of his staff put out a message saying he would not be appearing at tonight's show due to family commitments, The next day he is pictured on the field at a Seahawks game along the owner, his wife and Bradley Cooper. If it wasn't for Andrew Wood , there would be no PJ and no Victoria's Secret Model wife or house in Hawaii. He did manage to turn up at an Adam Sandler show with his trusty ukulele though. Duets with that ponce from Coldplate , Beyonce at that Global Citizen ( which if I recall in a previous blind is not all it's seams) ...I could go on and on. I don't begrudge money and the trappings that come with it or doors and societies that suddenly open up when you're a suddenly a big cheese but I don't think he's Mr All Things To All Men/Women/Gay/Bi/Trans/OneBalledHermaphrodites/Whales guy he sells himself as. I may be wrong and just a bitter old fan whining like it's an ex girlfriend, who's traded up and I don't mean to upset anyone here as you guys are pro's . I'll get torn to shreads. Anyway sorry rambling, I'm on my 4th coffee of the morning and i've had a bug up my arse for ages about this.
ReplyDelete"Garage Bands Revisited"
ReplyDeleteYep! That is the first thought that came to mind.
ReplyDeleteIt's not easy to say until it is solved, but I think the comment of the other band member causing whatever happened to the other band member to be a red herring, since it's doubtful he was directly responsible. Also, saying a band that has been famous for years being more popular now,the only way this could be is in touring, where most acts make the bulk of their money, they can have a number one record and Grammys, but it doesn't translate to the type of money and sales of say,20years ago. That Van Halen Blind was a red herring, because it was something that happened years ago, people were looking for Eddie falling off the wagon or fighting with Roth on the recent tour,or even the gossip worthy Haggar.
ReplyDeleteThanks Brian. Fun read. Good comments.
ReplyDeleteThere are many good points in your comment. I guess I never thought about all of the celebs EV hangs out with now. I do forget sometimes that he once tried to become a VJ on MTV before Pearl Jam formed (I think.) I guess there were always signs that Eddie was not exactly what he appeared to be. I read a story about the different drummers like Jack Irons that are not going to be inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame, but after months of pressure Eddie is trying to do the right thing by at least bringing the other drummers to the ceremony, but they will not be allowed to give a speech from what I understand. I wonder if we will see the day where Stone & Jeff finally spill the beans about the real Eddie.
ReplyDeleteThanks , most of my friend's love the band and won't listen to my tinfoil hat blasphemy. When Dave Abbruzzese got benched, he was a funny, confident guy who was popular with the fans particularly the women, and he was a great rock drummer. It was Ed that wanted him out the band but he made Stone deliver the silver bullet while he hid out the way. It killed Stone having to do that.I'm not sure if it's in the 20 documentary or accompanying book but there's a part about Ed taking the helm and control the band from Stone. Since then he's been in charge of the musical direction. There were split rumors a few years ago when Jeff seemed unhappy but they're businessmen at the end of the day, where else is he going to earn $200,000 + for 3 hours work

ReplyDelete"June Bolan: Syd Barrett had this quality like a candle that was about to be snuffed out at any minute. Really all illumination. An extraordinary, wonderful man. He took lots of LSD. Lots of people can take some LSD and cope with it in their lives, but if you take three or four trips every day....and then, because it was the done drug, you'd go round somebody's house for a cup of tea and they'd spike it. People did this to Syd.
Peter Jenner: 101 Cromwell Road was the catastrophic flat where Syd got acided out. Acid in the coffee every morning, that's what we were told. He had one of our cats and they gave the cat acid. Then he got taken up by Storm and Po from Hipgnosis who p ut him up in their flat on Brompton Road just by South Kensington tube station. They knew him very well an they suffered with him going down: they were very supportive and tried to keep him with us. We rescued him from Cromwell Road, which was run by he avy, loony messianic acid freaks."
And they're going on tour 2017..read the site above, Roger and David Gilmour weren't really nice about what they said about their childhood friend who had a nervous breakdown/acid poisoning. They said he changed overnight and people were dosing him with acid daily and without his consent and locking him in closets,etc...

ReplyDeleteThis to me is probably Pearl Jam, and I am sorry they sold out but they sold out, and I no longer want to support them. The main thing for me in part is who Eddie dumped his first wife for...they tell a different story but I am pretty sure I remember reading that Beth Liebling filed for divorce because Eddie ran away with a 22 year old model...that that was the last straw for her, that 22 year old model being Jill McCormick Vedder, current wife.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry but I just can't forgive him for that. He gave up the smart wife that built him for the voidoid he is with now...Beth was smart, educated, and talented herself. Jill isn't, she dropped out of high school at age 16 to go to Miami and be a "model' for Elite, which was the most predatory of "modelling agencies" if you want confirmation read Chrissie Teigen in the NY Post recently, the models "work" constantly but never break even over the fees the agencies charge them. What kind of mother would let her daughter do this I dont know, maybe they though "Jill" would never benefit from higher education anyway because she was too damn stupid.
Eddie is with her because she has no pesky ambitions, visions, creativity or education herself like Beth did, the woman who made his whole life possible from age 16 when he was penniless. It really disgusts me. I don't think Jill is such a bad person by herself, she is well meaning but stupid.
Jill's "charities" are extremely mainstream "causes" that are more society functions than real change agents. It is an excuse to swan about and get professional hair and makeup for her it seems. She isn't a bad person but I have checked out these charities and most of them are pretty much useless, including EB Research. There are other organizations that do more and better, and not at $10,000 a plate for some hedge fund millionaires. In fact there is a whole other EB organization that is for ordinary folks.
Yet Eddie keeps promoting her as this goddess of enlightenment, when what she is a glorified housewife/society matron wannabe. She is like the rich ladies that used to go down to the poor house and teach fancy embroidery and so forth to the poor. I guess he thinks if he doesn't create a public persona for her or give her something to do she will feel left behind and leave like Beth.
There, said it! Nobody is paying attention, but until something changes no more Pearl Jam for me. I just hate seeing it that much. neither of them would know "feminist" or "activist" if it bit them in the ass.
