I guess U2 for the group. I liked Debbie Gibson and Paula Adbul for female singers because they were cuties. Prince for male singer although technically he performed in a group.
It seems trite in retrospect to some, but in the context of the 1980s, Madonna was a pop culture icon. Everyone emulated her clothes, hair, makeup. As was Michael Jackson. Phil Collins Duran Duran Guns N Roses Bon Jovi Queen Prince The 80s were so. much. fun.
I know Prince fans will disagree, but Michael Jackson was the king of the 80's! Thriller was the biggest album of the 80's, and is still the #1 selling album of all time! I love the Bangles, U2 and Journey for bands! Whitney, Sade and Madonna were the best female acts.
depeche mode, new order, tears for fears, duran duran, soft cell, devo, u2, the human league, madonna, suzanne vega, prince, steve winwood, tom petty, kitaro, raffi (ok, that was my kids)
In the 90s I was a bit older (obviously) and started appreciating Michael Jackson (I saw the videoclip thriller when first aired, but due to my very young age I did not even remember the name of the guy until years later) as a singer, and Metallica and queen as groups.
Pat Benatar!! Michael Jackson Lionel Richie Prince Elvis Costello George Michael Wham The Police Madonna Whitney Houston Janet Jackson Living Colour (very late 80's)
I Loved Living Colour too!! Prince, The Smiths, Echo , The Cars , Morris Day and the Time, Rick James and Cheap Trick. Weird but fun times that i barely remember. Glad i survived.
I like a lot of the artists that have already been mentioned. I'd like to add Falco, Bonnie Tyler, Cyndi Lauper, Human League, Robbie Nevil, Tina Turner, Huey Lewis and the News, Souxie and the Banshees, B52's, Devo, Duran Duran, a-ha, and all of the one-hit wonders of the 80s.
My teen to adult years played out in the 80s so pretty much all of the artists listed above (minus a few) were on heavy rotation on cassette, cd, or radio for me. My first actual concert (outside of Kenny Rogers at the Houston Rodeo) was by a group called The Smithereens. After I got my first job at 16 and started driving, going to concerts became a right of passage. Some I remember off the top of my head: REM, The Cult, Poison, Motley Crue, Guns and Roses, Def Leppard, and Rush. I was lucky to grow up in a city (Houston) which was a stop for most major tours. Our major concert venue/arena (and home to the Houston Rockets) was once called The Summit and then Compaq Center and is now home to Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church.
The 80s is also when this white kid from the suburbs became a fan of rap and hip-hop. So I'd be remiss if I didn't also include the Beastie Boys, Run-D.M.C., N.W.A., Eazy-E, Too Short, 2 Live Crew, L.L. Cool J, Sir Mix-A-Lot, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince, Salt-N-Peppa, and many others among some of my favorites, too. Admittedly, it was harder to get parental approval of certain rap/hip-hop albums and concert attendance because of the language, but friends would often "make a tape" of what they had and share with other friends. Boy how times have changed over the past 30 years...

ReplyDeleteIn the time, when I was too young: Falco as singer and the bangles as a group (I would say mecano, but I do not think anyone outside spain knows them except for the reason that one dude in the group was the guy who, boning penélope cruz since she was 16, brought that scourge to light), mainly because bangles are the only international group I remember having heard at the time.

As a young teen in the 80's it was a-ha in a big way. Morten Harket's voice ?? (the rest of him was pretty amazing too).
