Blind Item #9
This foreign born A-/B+ list actor is halfway to an EGOT. I think if he focused on television he could probably knock out the third pretty easily. Most of the time he shows himself on television though it is to do Shakespeare. Although our actor is foreign born, his #MeToo journey began here in the States when he was molested by one of his drama instructors. That same man is still running a theatre company and still likes to have productions featuring young men as often as possible. That instructor was released when the school found out about his behavior. He has also been released from other places for the same behavior, but yet, he still has a theatre company and says everything is a misunderstanding. Does that also include what went on in that Asian country known for attracting molesters.
Eddie Redmayne?
ReplyDeleteSo I take it he has an Oscar and a Tony then?
ReplyDeleteOne of the Fiennes Brothers?
ReplyDeleteNot Redmayne, he "only" has 1 of the big 4- an Oscar.
ReplyDeleteHe has a Tony too.
Deleteare we supposed to know the molester? i can't tell how well known he is from the blind. have no idea on the victim.
ReplyDeleteJeremy Irons
ReplyDeleteSo the molester hangs out in the Philippines or Thailand? And denies it all...Goddard?
ReplyDeleteIrons is an interesting guess but apparently he already has an Emmy for Outstanding Narrator in Game of Lions
ReplyDeleteMark Rylance for the victim?
ReplyDeleteHugh Jackman?
ReplyDelete@Veruca I think you got it
ReplyDeleteWas about to guess Mark Rylance as well.
ReplyDeleteHe fits the description, and he's been stateside most of his adult life. I had thought maybe someone younger, but he has been doing theatre since he was very young.
Haven't looked into the drama instructors (yet) but maybe someone can find something?
Not Hugh Jackman. He has an Emmy already.
ReplyDelete@Montana Marriott,
ReplyDeleteProbably, but not necessarily. They could have a Grammy for audio book or Broadway recording.
It's Redmayne. I hope someone with some knowledge of the scene can unblind the drama teacher/theatre company director (?) though
ReplyDeleteRedmayne does Shakespeare on TV?

ReplyDeleteThe blind says that the school was in the United States, not the UK.
DeleteLoved Eddie Redmayne in Pillars of the Earth.
ReplyDeletePeople forget about Pillars of the Earth. It was fantastic.
DeleteWhat is EGOT?
ReplyDeleteSomeone who has won an (E)mmy, (G)rammy, (O)scar, AND (T)ony awards. There are currently 12 in that club.
Delete^^What Lindy asked.^^ EGOT = ???
ReplyDeleteWinning an Emmy Grammy Osacar and Tony.
ReplyDeleteHoward Fine for theatre company??
ReplyDeleteKenneth Branagh
ReplyDeleteSomeone who frequents Thailand?
ReplyDeleteRe: Mark Rylance
ReplyDeleteI misspoke and have been meaning to fix this all day.
He moved to the US as a child and did high school and local theatre as a child/ teen in Wisconsin (and possibly Connecticut).
He did (and has done throughout his career) traditional Shakespeare, that is, men/ boys in female roles. Which could explain the remark about the director always casting young men. (Whether him or other Shakespearean actors.)
Then he moved back to the UK as an adult.
I'm not saying it's him, just an option.
Eddie Redmayne got started in theatre long before he came to the US, so I don't think it's him.
Kenneth Branagh has an Emmy, so it's not him either.
So any theatre pedos in Wisconsin in the 70s?
ReplyDelete@Sara, Rylance has his Oscar, a few Tony’s and was Emmy nominated for Wolfe Hall, which could explain the bit about doing more tv and knocking that one out?
ReplyDeleteThese blinds make me so sad and angry.
He was incredible in Wolf Hall. Surprised to see he wasn't the winner. Richard Jenkins was.
Delete@Tigercat
ReplyDeleteYep. And he has done TV Shakespeare. I can't think of a current actor *more* associated with Shakespeare.
Honestly, the more I think about it, I figure it HAS to be him. The blind uses the word "molest" and he was in the US as a child. Redmayne was not. (I'm sure Redmayne was couched at some point, but not for this blind.)
Unless there's an actor with a Grammy for something other than audio books or Broadway recording. Those are the only categories I checked.
And yeah, these blinds do make my heart hurt. I probably should stop obsessing over them.
Molester sounds like Gary Goddard who molested Anthony Edwards and others when they were young. Goddard used to run a youth theater. Of course, Goddard is known to get rape-y with his friend Gary Goddard.
ReplyDeleteHis friend Bryan Singer, lol.
ReplyDeleteYou need a (free) account to register for access, but this article describes a complicated relationship with a drama teacher Rylance’s parents hired. There is no smoking gun, but the innuendo and hero worship and hushed manner of discussing the mentor could support this blind.

OH DEAR GOD
ReplyDeleteYep, definitely Rylance. That is creepy AF. Thanks, @SaltyVeruca!
Now to find an English teacher fired from at least one school in Wisconsin (first was in a flag protest) in the 70s who also had/ still has a theater company.
God I need to go to bed.

ReplyDeleteSara, I deleted my post. I don’t feel comfortable naming anyone due to the serious nature of this blind.
ReplyDeleteHowever, there is a person who taught Mark drama who is still very active in the Milwaukee theatre scene today. The original connection was via Mark’s parents’ school. The man is associated with a different theatre now. I found no arrest record. I’m not accusing...he may have had more than one drama teacher as a teen in Wisconsin. This is a sad blind. While Mark fits, I hope its not him.
Oh wow, I didn't see the comment. That's fine, and I get why you wouldn't want to post the name. There's no reason to think he's even still in Wisconsin anyway. Unless you tied him to other details besides just the school, then you might have something.
ReplyDeleteBut it's definitely Mark. I'd try to recap the highlights of the article, for those who didn't read it. But it should be read to get the vibe of it.
It says the "relationship" with the teacher "caused problems" and his parents approved "at first" but "it wasn't normal". They even refer to Mark working it out in therapy but that's it. Clearly they had to edit the details for legal reasons. Or Mark was holding back.
Hey, I'm just glad that it didn't kill his passion for the theatre, because what a loss to the world that would be. I have a friend whose bucket list includes "seeing Mark Rylance performing Shakespeare".
That's how big a deal he is (perm A+ in theatre world) because I know some commenters have likely never even heard of him.
If it's Rylance, there is no mention of the US theater training or company he worked with as a youth.
ReplyDeleteCan't find it.
His Wikipedia starts with RADA.
Look at his full IMDB bio. He trained with a teacher from his parents’ school. That person is now associated with a stand-alone theatre in the same city. This theatre director had more than one successful young protege.
ReplyDeleteMark also spent a summer in Virginia with a theatre company before leaving for RADA. So he would have been around 17 while in Virginia.
There is more than one opportunity if he is the young man in the blind.
@SaltyVeruca +1 (IMDB bio)
ReplyDelete@J
ReplyDeleteThere is literally no body else it could be. "Halfway to an EGOT" isn't that rare for an actor, but it is if one is not an Emmy. Add in foreign born, still living, young enough that his teacher is still living and active, AND spent time in the US as a child. That alone would clinch it, but throw in the Shakespeare reference and it's a dead giveaway.
My feeling is this was not in Virginia but the teacher/ family friend from his dad's school in Milwaukee. The article stopped short of describing the relationship as sexual or abusive, but it's pretty clear.
Anyway, that said, he could easily EGOT within a decade. Five years if he really goes for it.
Well I'll go ahead and say the name:
ReplyDeleteDale Gutzman
Histiry if being fired & rehired, has ties to theatres in Ukraine and Thailand.
