Blind Item #11 - The Cult's Money Man - Mr. Hedge

Most of his success comes from a brilliant move about a decade or so ago.  No other way to describe it.  He was comfortably wealthy back then.  Then he made one of the all-time smartest investment moves anyone has ever made in that industry.

He was part of the cult back then, and donated like everyone else.  As his investment began to bear fruit, his giving to the cult grew tremendously.

As of a few years ago, he was the largest donor to the cult, by far.  His giving was in its own category.

Around that time, a certain website, known for its very detailed research about the cult, wrote some very unflattering things about our money man and some adoptions.  Our money man was not a big figure to the general public, but he was now beginning to appear prominently whenever anyone searched for a story about the cult.  The cult got involved with the big search engine to help fix that part.

In very recent years, his giving to the cult multiplied once again.  He also made a very large real estate purchase, which has raised questions.

In recent months, rumors have swirled that our Money Man may be in the process of leaving the cult.  He may have even left already.  This coincides with what appears to be a big change in very close personal relationship, but nothing is official yet.

The cult is doing everything they can to make sure he is happy and keeps giving.  They are really sweating this one out.  If this whale stays with the cult, he has the potential to take the entire cult's financials to a whole new level, on a permanent basis.

Bob Duggan Diamond Maximus with Honors for $42 million donation.

Yeah, I was coming to say Robert Duggan, too.

Robert Duggan sounds right. Interesting that donors are called "whales".

He was noticeably absent from the IAS Gala.

Isn't a line crossed when you end up shilling for Scientology whether that's you're intent or not?

I do believe Bagel nailed it. Time to dig.

Duggan recently upped his stake in Achaogen, an antibiotics manufacturer. In addition, he purchased a "ghost town" called Holy City near Los Gatos.

@Dena —

By coincidence, big-money gamblers at casinos are also called whales because, presumably, they make the "biggest splash" at the tables. Some of them have several tables going at once and think nothing of losing millions.

Example:

“At the baccarat table, I was dealing, another guy was paying and collecting and a third person calculated the commissions,” remembers Colianni. “He gave us $84 million in action per hour, he played all day, his host was continually at his side and he wound up losing $30 million.”

Oh that's actually a pretty common term at leading in sales or high finance/on Wall Street, rule of thumb referring to a buyer or investor spending massively/at least 10 times the typical amount.

Aren’t the high rollers at casinos called whales?

Oh, I know where Holy City is. Been through there a couple times. Huh.

$6 million for 142 acres near Los Gatos seems like a very good deal.

Interesting the ghost town was originally a utopian cult site.

More on the Holy City purchase, including concerns from area residents that it remain lightly developed.

Plenty of Scio Whales into investments.

Man, I need to get my eyes checked today. Either that or this was the weirdest page load I’ve had on CDAN yet.

Mag said...

@Tricia13 - Care to explain that Haggis guess? Nothing, literally nothing about him fits this blind. Is he just CDANers go to guess for anything Scientology related?

Unknown said...

This has to be fake. No "brilliant" movies have been made in at least 15 years.

But seriously, color me unsurprised that the "big search engine" would be burying results on behalf of the cult. Par for the course for it.

Mag said...

@Cail - It says "brilliant MOVE", not "brilliant movie". :DDD

direct from the wiki for Bob duggan:
"Bob and his wife, Patricia (Trish) Duggan, are members of the Church of Scientology. Duggan has been referred to as the church's "largest financial supporter" by former Scientology executive Mark Rathbun.[9]"

"the facts in the story we wrote are rock solid. We relied on first-hand accounts, court records, and photographic evidence to show that in 2013, at the same time that Duggan and his wife, Trish, were propping up failing Scientology facilities in South Africa with large donations, two of their six adopted children suddenly showed up in that country, and were being cared for by South African Scientology families.
It suggested a bizarre trade deal — Duggan largesse saved Scientology buildings while two of their children were taken off their hands — "

Wait a second. Wouldn't owning a biopharmaceutical company be anathema to $cios? They don't believe in doctors and medecines, right?

$cios new network started on Sunday on most streaming devices.

Now dealing with you Mr. Hedge because I was just made aware of some things you had to say yesterday.
1) your so-called money and hedge fund prowess doesn't impress or worry me.
2) learn to read, in #14 yesterday I said if Selena doesn't appreciate the second chance she has been given she should fuck off. IF she actually had a kidney donated to her and she's back drugging with a donated kidney, she is a complete POS and deserves to die next time. The person who gave it to her has every reason to hate her if she hadn't corrected her ways. And should, if she doesn't.
3) I'm out hours daily, yesterday was NCAA day, I was in. Don't even think you can imagine what type of lifestyle I live living on a beach in Florida, ok pal? And keep your head out of your ass and on your day trading computer screen, just in case you miss out on a crypto currency short you probably have.

@Eric, thanks for the clarification. I seem to recall reading how they treat injuries by pressing the body part against the object that gave them pain to transfer the pain back to the object.
