Blind Items Revealed #5

March 19, 2018

As I told you months and months ago, this foreign born A list mostly movie actress who is an Academy Award winner/nominee was going to bomb with a big box office movie. Sure enough, it happened and now the studio doesn't want to make a sequel, at least with her.

Alicia Vikander/Tomb Raider

    1. The Chinese are not the most discerning consumers of film
      But then again, who is?

    2. "Tomb Raider's muted domestic bow of $23.5 million from 3,854 theaters is a disappointment for Warner Bros. and MGM, which partnered in rebooting the female-led franchise that is based on the videogame." -- Hollywood Reporter on its US take

    3. With a budget of 94 millions and millions spent advertising, the movie may have broken even. It has been heavily promoted, at least in the US. I don't know about overseas, but money was spent on television ads.

  3. Please. I saw it and it wasn't that bad. Definitely not as bad as Enty made it sound. No movie was doing well against BP, and TR had a pretty terrible marketing campaign. It's doing fine, financially, for a video game knockoff, already over $200M worldwide, on a $94M budget.

    1. Remember "Super Mario Bros."
Can we have a 90s week of that and Radiohead and OJ and Gilbert Gottfried?

  4. Nisore....your so right. To put it up against a Marvel movie and with the horrendous marketing....it was always going to be a dud

  5. It's going to make at least a small profit. Disappointing, perhaps, but not a bomb.

  6. She has no charisma. This is the problem with the Oscars being awarded for anything other than entertainment -- it blinds people in Hollywood to the obvious. She is 100 percent wrong for the role.

But she is fine. Super fine. Would love to touch the hiney. With consent of course.

  7. It's still a disappointment. It made like $60m domestic, which is very low for a $100m budget. But it has made like $150m overseas, so it's an average return. I think Enty's point is that Vikander isn't the one bringing in an audience, so they will probably find a new lead if they want a big splash at domestic box office.

  8. Everyone is saying the movie sucks DESPITE her convincing performance, and it's still prolly gonna make money in the long run, so a sequel could still happen... Oh, and Enty had a blind about Pacific Rim 2 bombing, not happening either!

  9. Would it kill them to just make a movie that follows the plot of a hit game? The only reason I'm watching it instead of playing the game is because it is live action. They don't need to crank out a fresh crappy script, they can just use the story from the game. KISS

  10. A 9-digit-budget movie doesn't have to lose money on its official bottom line to be seen as a failure. It just has to fail to make as much as the studio was counting on to fund whatever other projects they had in mind.

The 2001 Tomb Raider made 275M on a 115M budget (not counting marketing), which is good, but it had Angelina Jolie at her peak. It already had a sequel (with Jolie) that did poorly. This one's a premature nostalgia grab for a movie that was a thinly veiled excuse to film every nerd's fantasy of Angelina Jolie running around in a Lara Croft outfit for an hour and a half, except without the person who sold that movie. Oops.

@Amy, I'm starting to see that as a big problem in movies today: no charisma. They're all astoundingly attractive, so they're nice enough to look at on the screen; but they don't imbue their characters with any personality, so they're forgettable and interchangeable. I really don't know why that is.

  11. Wrinkle In Time is a bomb. Pacific Rim likely will be. Tomb Raider is merely disappointing.

  12. I saw it and it was okay. She was actually pretty good. The problem - IMHO - is that it lacks some of the self-deprecating humour of the first 2. This one was not tongue in cheek, but dead straight and perhaps a bit too earnest.

  13. Can you believe I actually liked the movie? It reminds me a lot of the video games (at least more than the older movies - the ones with Angelina), that's probably why I liked it.

Tho I do agree she is a little bland, mostly if compared to Angelina (she has no sex appeal) but Lara Croft doesnt need all that sex appeal.

Anyway, like a lot of people pointed out, it was a bad time to release this movie, all Marvel (Black Panther+Avengers) creations outshines most movies since fans are very devoted and excited for new stuff.

  14. It got 5 stars in the local big time metropolitan newspaper where I live. So there.

  15. If you look at the credits you will find an unsually high proportion of Chinese names. The story was very strange but featured a lot of elements that are standard in Chinese action/myth movies, I think most of the problem lies right there, it was made to do well in China and lost it's Western audience because it was badly done. Generally I like this genre ,so I often give the less than great ones a pass but this movie was just awful. Miss Wooden was only partly to blame for this mess.

Millennials are smug monotone and without any personality. I think the movie was actually trying to appeal to that audience. Yet these social deados don't like each other, or people in general. And buy entertainment that is the exact opposite of them.

  17. There is only one LC, that is Camilla Luddington. As for the movie, it already failed at the writing stage. In order for the movie to work, they need a good, serious director & better, talented writers who are passionate about the game, who are familiar with the game's storyline. My prediction is that this movie will flop. Doesn't want to make a sequel, at least with Alicia? Good! Lets see if there are any better actress out there who is perfect as LC, same way Camilla portray LC.

  18. Sorry ENT, "sure enough" doesn't cut it with the numbers and reviews for the movie.
