This still living actor was during this swinging decade one of the biggest stars in his home country. He was not as big in the USA but was in several box office hits and also had a very recognizable face due to his iconic look displayed on magazine covers and was in the gossip headlines a lot due to his famous romances. In the next decade, he took a break from film for several years due to heartbreak and burn out before coming back at the end of the decade in a comic book movie. Since then he has largely played character roles.
During the years of his self-imposed exile, he spent a lot of time in this large but poor country. He primary interest was in the spirituality associated with that country but while he was there he quietly did a lot for hunger problems in this country working with global organizations on both increasing food aid and introducing more effective farming (Green Revolution). There are streets named after him in some small towns .

Him and julie chrsitie mentioned in the kink's 'waterloo sunset', was known as the the most beautiful man in London during the 60's. Shared an apartment with michael caine at the time.
I wanted to say Sean Connery but it's wrong.
