I saw some friends are going on a cruise which features no cell service and no wifi options at all. How long have you gone without either of those? Would you take a vacation like that?

Probably not more than two days in the past 25 years, sadly. I say I'd love to do it for a month or more, but I really wonder.

ReplyDeleteHow long is the cruise? The fact that others from this person's social circle are also going along on the same cruise makes it slightly easier to swallow. With some of my friends in tow, I'd definitely do it. You just have to put the word out there among colleagues, etc. of what you are doing and then I think it would be great.

ReplyDeleteBut I don't abuse it. Some people stare at their phone constantly, and I'm not sure like that when I am with others. It's rude.
I've got a couple days without. I would definitely take a trip like this. There has to be plenty to do and see to give you occupied, plus I always keep a good old-fashioned book on hand four trips. Even if you were stuck on the ship at a minimum you can always drink and play cards with other guests.

ReplyDeleteI did something sort of like this last year, although it was not entirely voluntary. I went with friends to an all-inclusive in the Dominican, in this huge property there were only two locations that offered WiFi, and for 5 of the 6 days we were there, it was unusable. It took me back to the early-90’s, which was the last time I’d been offline that long. I felt isolated and detached from the rest of the informed world. Oddly, when I did get back online, the first thing I received was a text from my wife, telling me that half our shingles had blown off the roof in a late-winter Midwest storm. I wanted to put my phone in airplane mode again.

ReplyDeleteThis would do a lot of people good. Take along a few books, play some cards, do some puzzles, get some exercise. I took a last-minute 8-day cruise to Alaska a few years ago (I live near Vancouver, you can get last-minute deals sometimes) and it was extremely calming and relaxing.

ReplyDeleteI am as old as dirt and remember when basically no one had cell phones. Yea I would go camping or a trip without cell service or wifi. Would be a little weird at first but then would be no big deal. Sounds like a fun time.
ReplyDeleteOn our European Cruise from two months ago, we paid a flat fee to log on and use the Ship's WiFi- satellite service.
ReplyDeleteIt was unlimited but it cost a lot.
So, maybe a day.
Then, all four of us could log on/off as needed.
It would depend on how much I needed to use it. Cruises are pretty self contained and planned in advance, so you can make arrangements, not much need for GPS or monitoring things back home. Impromptu trip or traveling through foreign countries would be a completely different story.

ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm really not seeing any issue here. My husband hates for me to so much as go for a walk without my phone. I point out that this used to be entirely the norm, and that if he doesn't see me in an hour he should start looking. While he might have an issue going wireless for any period of time, I sure don't.

ReplyDeleteWhat's the problem with going without wifi/cell service? I make it a point to not use my phone on vacations. It's not much of a vacation if you're on your phone the whole time posting everything to snapchat or instagram or whatever social media sites people use.

ReplyDelete2 1/2 weeks when we were in Italy....I'm too cheap to pay for the international service. We camped in a very remote area over Spring Break this year, and it was wonderful to be without any access for 4 days. My husband and I payed for it when we got back, though, it took days to get through the emails.

ReplyDeleteYeah, it's called camping, folks. We used to do it when I was a kid, before everybody became glued to their screens.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I did that was early September, 2001. Driving home on the Friday, we heard bit by bit on the radio what had happened in New York on the Tuesday. I do not care to repeat the experience. I also like to get daily texts from our friend who feeds the cats. If I don't hear from him, I check to make sure that he's alive and not hospitalised, and if he is, I get in touch with someone else to take over feeding. Nothing makes me sadder than thinking about my boys starving to death while I'm kayaking and shelling and drinking rum with old island hoppers.

I use my ipad for reading books on the plane, and for reading celebrity gossip while I have coffee in the hotel room in the morning.
One month. It was lovely. I hate talking on the phone.
