Aretha Franklin — the first woman to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, dubbed the Queen of Soul for powerful anthems like "Respect" and "Chain of Fools" — died on Thursday at her home in Detroit. She was 76 years old.
The singer's publicist confirmed the news to the Associated Press through a family statement. Franklin died of advanced pancreatic cancer, the statement said.
"In one of the darkest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our heart. We have lost the matriarch and rock of our family," the family added.

ReplyDeleteHope she went peacefully. Such a sad day for music.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite singer while growing up in the 70's! Love the Gospel tunes and hits from back in the day. The Queen of Soul will be missed!
ReplyDeleteYou see some many over the top accolades given to so many undeserving "stars" these days. Manufactured awards, invented titles, manipulation of data to proclaim so and so is the top artist to ever_______,...
ReplyDeleteHaving said that, Aretha was "The Queen". RIP, and thank you for sharing your incredible gift.
What an icon. Rest in peace.
ReplyDeleteSo Enty thinks the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is the pinnacle of Aretha's career?
ReplyDeleteLook at the crap that's in the R&R Hall !
I laugh at people who claim to be "rockers" but worship that fake crap.
Calm down. It's just a descriptor, and one of several.
DeleteHer version of Respect is one of those transcendent pop culture phenomena. It elevates whoever hears it.

Clive Davis is the devil himself per Whitney Houston
Top female singers
ReplyDelete1. Tina Turner
2. Janis Joplin
3. Aretha Franklin
Not my opinion just a fact
The Obamas said she sang that way because she was black. I say she sang that way because she came up in the church. Quite a few peoples have known suffering and release.
ReplyDeleteMay you Rest In Peace. Your beautiful voice made me happy every time I heard you sing.
ReplyDeleteThere was nobody like Aretha - an almost indescribable talent. I will miss her.
ReplyDeleteAmazing voice and a true legend. RIP
ReplyDeleteAn American legend, a national treasure passes away and there are just 31 comments?!
ReplyDeleteAnyway for anyone who loves and appreciates real music made by musicians who play real instruments and who are accompanied by singers who know what a cue and a key are this is a day we all knew was coming but was still shocking and sad.
MTV has said they're going to do a tribute. What a joke. The special guests mentioned were Minaj, Grande and JLo. What a farce. There is video of Aretha dissing Minaj.
Hopefully when the Grammy's come around a real singer - Mary J Blige, Jennifer Hudson, Chaka (If she's able), or Fantasia who Aretha said nice things about will make herself available.
RIP
